Each time Kevin dreamt the same dream it seemed to become more and more vivid. It was as though the dream was drawing him closer and closer until he could reach out and touch it. The dream starts with Kevin driving down a road on a stormy night. As his car approached the destination Kevin saw a gate at a cemetery and some devilish-looking man in a cape with blazing red eyes waving him to come in, but Kevin was too scared to enter the gates. As Kevin would push on the gas to speed off his car would stall and the devilish man in the black cape would approach Kevin's car, then Kevin would wake up screaming in horror and sweating profusely. Kevin tried his best before he went to sleep not to read or watch any scary movies on the television so his mind wouldn't be fixated on that horrible dream. Kevin was so scared of his dream that he would leave the light on in his room all night in hopes he could sleep soundly, but that wasn't the case. Kevin told himself the next time that he had this dream he would try to remember more details about the dream and write them down on paper hoping to solve this horrifying puzzle. By doing this might even find the location of the cemetery so he could face this horrifying dream head-on and get his life back to normal. Before Kevin went to bed he drank a glass of wine in hopes this would calm his nerves, so when he was dreaming this horrible dream he would feel not so scared and more in focus of his surroundings. Just before Kevin went to bed he knelt at the side of his bed and said a little prayer before he closed his eyes and started dreaming. Kevin's preparation before the dream started to pay off for him in a big way. After careful analysis of his dream in the morning, Kevin was able to find out the name of the cemetery. The name he was able to come up with was meterion Gates, but Kevin could not make out the other two words because they were partially covered in dirt. There were enough words on the sign to pinpoint the location of the cemetery. The cemetery was located about fifty miles south of where Kevin currently lives. Kevin decided to wait until the next day to search for the cemetery because the weather forecast didn't show a cloud in the sky. Kevin decided since the weather was so nice he wouldn't start his drive until around 3 pm and arrive by 4 pm which gave him four hours to do some investigating before the sun went down. Kevin left the house a little before 3 p.m. because he had to stop by the gas station to get some gas in his car and eat a sandwich on the way to the cemetery. As Kevin was pumping gas in his car he looked up at the sky, closing his eyes and feeling the warmth from the sun on his face. Kevin was so excited he ran into the gas station and got his sandwich and drink. Kevin told the cashier "Man it sure is a beautiful day out, isn't it." The cashier replied "It sure is, but I'm here all night. What a bummer." "Well, I must be going. I want to get an early start before the sun goes down, said Kevin." Kevin got in his car and headed for the Koimeterion Gates to put an end to his horrid dream. Kevin had no idea this dream was about to become a reality and be the last dream he would ever dream again. Kevin wasn't such a perfect guy as his friends all thought he was. He would go to church every Sunday like all the other Christians would but when Monday came his sins would take hold of him. Maybe because he was deep in sin, he was having such a horrible dream. Kevin's car finally pulled up to the Koimeterion Gates which was going to be his final destination and there was no turning back. Just as Kevin's car came to a complete stop the beautiful sky turned grey. Kevin rubbed his eyes and couldn't believe that this beautiful day was turning so gloomy so fast. Kevin said "This can't be happening. There wasn't supposed to be a cloud in the sky." Then it started storming and as Kevin turned his head to the right there stood the devilish man with blazing red eyes wearing a black cape and waving Kevin to come into the cemetery. Kevin closed his eyes and said, "I must be dreaming." As Kevin opened his eyes nothing changed. The devilish man in the black cape was now at the driver's side window of his car. Kevin slowly turned his head to the left and he wet his pants and his heart was pounding out of his chest. The devilish man was pointing at the sign on the cemetery gate laughing.

Book excerpt: Tracing words to their origins opens a new window to human civilization and culture and helps us understand the roots of some of our present social trends and attitudes. For example, the etymology of words for family members clearly shows the division of responsibilities in the most basic unit of society - the family. Father was the "protector" of the family (Pa: protect), mother was the "feeder"(Ma: breast), brother was the load "carrier" (Bher: carry) and daughter was the "milker" (Dhugh: to milk). If one makes the effort to read beyond the shallow shell of sounds and symbols, one can recognize our human oneness portrayed in our words and their historical roots. The primary motivation for writing this dictionary is the hope that it would foster a greater appreciation for the commonality in the apparent variance among different languages and cultures, and ultimately nurture a greater understanding among those who speak apparently different languages. In tracing any Persian word to its origins, its cognates in other Indo-European languages must be considered. In this dictionary, English cognates are regularly referred to along with some other Indo-European equivalents. Altogether, over 1,600 roots and 17,400 derived words are presented in this dictionary. One of the most unique features of this dictionary is its graphical presentation of etymological data, similar to a family tree. The derivations of words are indicated with arrows rather than lengthy text. The arrows greatly simplify the process of tracing words to their roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster, you will discover the God Who is God—the God Who reigns over every atom in His spectacular universe. Benjamin Beddome introduces us to our Sovereign by showing how His great works of creation and providence are related. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones defines providence by examining its three elements—preservation, government, and concurrence. Then, Arthur W. Pink explains the meaning of the Godhood of God and why it is crucial for Christians to understand it in opposition to the dignity, power, and attainments of man. But what is providence like and from what does it arise, properly understood? William S. Plumer tells us that God’s providence is like God’s nature—holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible! Pink then explains so beautifully that God rules everything—all inanimate matter, irrational creatures, human beings, and all angels, good and evil. How can such a lofty doctrine be practical to believers? Joel Beeke gives us sound answers from the infallible Scriptures and from the Puritans. To compliment those answers, Thomas Watson gives biblical instruction in the ways that our sovereign God works all things for good to His eternally loved people. There is one aspect of providence that especially thrills the heart of all believers: how God worked in His sovereign, powerful, and mysterious ways to bring them to saving faith in Christ and to everlasting life! John Flavel reminds us of that astonishing work and the surprising mercies of God’s grace! Lastly, Thomas Reade concludes our subject by filling our souls with a glorious vision of God’s absolute reign by Christ Jesus in our hearts. Articles: Creation & Providence - Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) - From a Baptist catechism, here is a beautiful and brief introduction to the doctrines of creation and providence and how these distinct works of God relate. Defining Providence - David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) - a survey and description of the three elements of providence: preservation, rule, and concurrence. The Godhood of God - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - This expression has fallen out of use among many modern Christians; so, what does it mean? Answer: The absolute rule of the living God over all things according to His eternal purpose. The Properties of Providence - William S. Plumer (1802-1880) - God’s providential rule arises from God’s glorious character: it is holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible. God Rules Everything - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - The one true and living Sovereign governs inanimate matter, irrational creatures, all human beings, and all angels—both good and evil. God's Providence Applied - Joel Beeke - God’s absolute rule over all people, things, and events is the most practical of doctrines for daily life. God is in control! Upon that supreme truth we may take comfort and encouragement every day. All Things Work for Good - Thomas Watson (1620-1686) - a helpful explanation of how every event in the believer’s life is working for his or her eternal good and God’s eternal glory. Providence & Conversion - John Flavel (1627-1691) - Little in the life of believers brings as much joy, comfort, strength, and worship as realizing all that God has done to save them in Jesus Christ. The Lord God Omnipotent - Thomas Shaw B. Reade (1776-1841) - To know God in Christ is to possess all the sources and secrets of true peace in the storms of life and the certainty of everlasting life in the world to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ministry of the Holy Spirit is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity," writes celebrated author and respected pastor Warren Wiersbe. In his first of two books covering Acts, Be Dynamic focuses on Peter's ministry, mostly in Israel and centered in Jerusalem. Through explaining Luke's record of the Gospel's advancement and church expansion, Wiersbe opens the door to understanding the work of the church today. Using hard-hitting quotes from recognized names like St. Augustine and John Bunyan, Wiersbe proves himself as a well-read author and gifted writer. The depth of his study is astounding, yet the accessibility of his text for every age group is evident as well. He proves what Luke intended-for Acts to be interpreted not as the apostles' glorious acts, but as the life-changing acts of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit lives in believers today, the same God calls followers to expand His church, and the same basic problems still arise within the church, but the same power available then is still available now to change the nations.

The story of how words come to be is the story of how humans think, and how we fashion our civilizations. Words can be the product of long and intertwining histories, migrations from other languages, or new coinages of science or slang. This diversity of origins is part of what gives the English language its beauty and power. In Dictionary of Word Origins, etymologist Joseph T. Shipley provides a fascinating window into the evolution of modern English, from the onomatopoetic aspect of “abash” to the animalistic origins of “zodiac.”

By comparing the vocabularies of its various descendants, however, it is possible to reconstruct the basic Indo-European roots with considerable confidence. In The Origins of English Words, Shipley catalogues these proposed roots and follows the often devious, always fascinating, process by which some of their offshoots have grown. Anecdotal, eclectic, and always enthusiastic, The Origins of English Words is a diverting expedition beyond linguistics into literature, history, folklore, anthropology, philosophy, and science.
