Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen chapters detail the role of knowledge in technical innovation at the individual, organizational, national, and international levels of the large commercial aircraft (LCA) aerospace community, how U.S. public policy shapes the external environment of that community, and the influence of the community's actors on technological practice. Scholars from disciplines such as business and strategic management, communications, economics, international political economy, library and information science, organizational science and learning theory, political science, public policy, and sociology treat topics such as: the growth of LCA manufacturing, U.S. research and development funding, engineers' information production and use behaviors, the relationship between technical uncertainty and information use, the use of computer networks, and a number of chapters on the structural behavior of engineers' communication and information use. This book was released on 1991 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken that investigated the relationship between the use of U.S. government technical reports by U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists and selected institutional and sociometric variables. Survey research is the methodology used for the study. Data were collected by means of a self- administered mail questionnaire. The approximately 34 000 members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) served as the study population. The response rate for the survey was 70 percent. A dependent relationship was found to exist between the use of U.S. government technical reports and three of the institutional variables (academic preparation, years of professional aerospace work experience, and technical discipline). The use of U.S. government technical reports was found to be independent of all of the sociometric variables. The institutional variables best explain the use of U.S. government technical reports by U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists.

Book excerpt: As automation and competitiveness between companies and countries grows, the need for the speedy research and delivery of information is becoming greater than ever before. Defining technology transfer as ‘the process of getting technical knowledge, ideas, services, inventions, and products from their origin to wherever they can be put to practical use’, this book, first published in 1991, explores the role of the information specialist in the technology transfer process. It brings together discussions from information mediaries associated with federal information centres, academic research institutions, and a large metropolitan public library. Agencies and organizations at the federal, state, and local level that are involved in and responsible for technology transfer programs are described in a who's who section of the volume, and the system for the distribution of information at NASA is covered in detail, this being considered by some to be the birthplace of the technology transfer concept. The various regional NASA Industrial Application Centers are also identified, and the numerous print and online services available are noted as well. Other topics covered include the use of technology transfer in agricultural programs to improve U.S. competitiveness in the global marketplace and how the large public library can promote technology transfer by acting as important centres for information transfer and research.

Book excerpt: Deep Stall applies a framework of strategic analysis to the Boeing Company. Boeing is the world's largest aerospace / defence company, with turnover in the region of US $60bn. The book examines the relative decline of Boeing in the civil aircraft market in relation to European manufacturer, Airbus. The aim of the book is to utilize the concept of strategic value to explain Boeing's decline. The authors define this concept as investment in people and technology to leverage future market success by developing innovative new products, arguing that Boeing has neglected strategic value in favour of shareholder value, defined in terms of short-term cash benefits. The rationale for the book exists both in the fact that the story in itself is interesting and also in the wider framework of analysis concerning the correct strategic approach for running a high technology business. The argument illustrates what can happen when quarterly returns become the predominant strategic rationale for a company. In the U.S. the business media (Economist, Forbes, Fortune, and Business Week etc) are now focusing on the question of Boeing's decline and the major implications for the U.S. national interest. Boeing is one of the jewels in the US technology crown, but today U.S. jobs and capability are being exported abroad, with most of its aircraft program work based in Asia. This is a hot topic in the US which explains why the business media are now so interested in this question. The book sits squarely in the centre of this debate. Deep Stall concludes with a brief analysis of the recent fight-back that has been evident in Boeing's fortunes and the successful campaign to sell the new 787. The authors probe the question of whether Airbus or Boeing is likely to dominate in the next ten or fifteen years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this cutting-edge collection of essays is threefold: first, it presents the principles of data collection and interpretation or the methodological distinctions of a particular method appropriate to technical communication research. Second, it discusses the foundational principles of the methodologies given the primary discipline in which they were created and applied. Finally, it reflects upon the process of importing and employing these methodologies into the research field of technical communication, and on how technical communication research has contributed to the development and application of these methodologies. Written by many noted scholars in the field and presenting a wide range of research methods, Research in Technical Communication combines theory and practice. Both technical communicators and industry researchers who want to learn more about workplace research and methodologies will find it invaluable, as will beginning and advanced scholars, who will find much that is useful in its variety of subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most countries aspire to have a civil aircraft industry, but even in the best of times, success at civil aircraft manufacturing is difficult. Technological barriers, governments, and geopolitical considerations are only the beginning of the challenges faced by those aspiring to join the industry. In fact, only four companies in the world (Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, and Embraer) have mastered manufacturing the extremely complex machines that are civil aircraft. In Entering the Civil Aircraft Industry: Business Realities at the Technological Frontier, Dr. Dean Roberts provides an insider’s perspective of this fascinating, multifaceted, and challenging industry using his more than thirty years of experience and interest in all aspects of the field. Using in-depth case studies, he examines the interplay of industrial policy, high technology, globalization, and business strategy on the field of civil jet aircraft manufacturing, seeking out the reasons for policy successes—and failures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismissing industrial policy because 'governments cannot pick winners' is counter-productive. This Element studying selected major innovations illustrates the fact that virtually all major new technologies have been developed by a synergetic cooperation between the public and the private sectors, each doing what it can do best. By examining how R&D is financed, rather than where it takes place, the authors show that the role of the public sector is much more pronounced than is often thought. The nature of the cooperation − who does what − varies with the nature of each innovation so that simple, one-size-fits-all, rules about what each sector should do are suspect. These results are particularly important because they challenge the scepticism in the United states and elsewhere about the importance of industrial policy, a scepticism that threatens to undermine the long-term, and necessary cooperation, between the public and private sectors in promoting growth-inducing innovations.
