Book Synopsis Characterizing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa by : Francisca Ayodeji Akala
Download or read book Characterizing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa written by Francisca Ayodeji Akala and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite global progress in understanding the epidemiology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), knowledge about the epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains limited and subject to much controversy. In the more than 25 years since the discovery of HIV, no scientific study has provided a comprehensive, data-driven synthesis of the spread of HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) in the region. Consequently, the effectiveness of policies, programs, and resources intended to address the spread of HIV/AIDS has been compromised. This report aims to fill the knowledge gap by providing the first-ever comprehensive scientific assessment and data-driven epidemiological synthesis of HIV's spread in MENA. It is based on a literature review and analysis of thousands of largely unrecognized publications, reports, and data sources extracted from scientific literature or collected from sources at the local, national, and regional levels. The resulting collection of data provides a solid foundation on which efforts to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS can be based. 'Characterizing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa' will be of particular interest to policy makers, researchers, development practitioners, and specialists in public health and epidemiology."

Book Synopsis Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health in Thailand by : Alan Gray
Download or read book Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health in Thailand written by Alan Gray and published by Institute Fo Ity. This book was released on 1999 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of issues of gender and sexuality in relation to reproductive health in Thailand is discussed here. The topics of this monograph were categorized according to a list formulated by WHO. These categories are family planning, maternal/child health and safe motherhood, infertility, and abortion/complications of abortions. The document also provides information on sexually transmitted diseases/reproductive tract infections, sex education, reproductive tract malignancy, adolescent health, menopause, and the elderly. These categories fall naturally under three headings: family planning, maternal/child health, and the consequences of unwanted pregnancies. In the latter stage of the project, consultative meetings were held in Bangkok, Hat Yai, Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai to obtain valuable views from other experts. The results were discussed at a seminar held in Bangkok on November 21-22, 1998. This seminar saw the adoption of a life cycle perspective in which men and women act out their gender roles--including those associated with sexuality--during adolescence and the subsequent stages of their adult lives. Because reproductive health is a coherent entity, policy and programs for all aspects of reproductive health should be integrated. This project concludes that research, advocacy and training concerning the gender-related aspects of interactions between providers and clients in the delivery of reproductive health services is needed. Also, a comprehensive information, education and communication program is called for so that services can be extended to include men in supportive roles wherever possible.

Book Synopsis HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa by : Obijiofor Aginam
Download or read book HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa written by Obijiofor Aginam and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, communicable diseases have devastated armies and weakened the capacity of state institutions to perform core security functions. Today, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has prompted many of the affected countries to initiate policies aimed at addressing its impact on their armed forces, police, and prisons. This volume explores the dynamics of how the security sectors of selected African states have responded to the complex and multifaceted challenges of HIV/AIDS. Current and impending African HIV/AIDS policies address a range of security-related issues: * The role of peacekeepers in the spread or control of HIV * The dilemma of public health (the need to control HIV) versus human rights (protection against mandatory medical testing) needs * The gender dimensions of HIV in the armed forces * The impact of HIV on the police and prisons The chapters in HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa are written by African practitioners, including commissioned officers who are currently serving in the armed forces, medical officers and nurses working in the military, and African policy and academic experts. While the book does not comprehensively address all aspects of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the security sector, the contributors nonetheless highlight the potentials and limits of existing policies.
