Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, thousands of young African men conscripted to fight for France and Britain were captured and held as prisoners of war in Germany, where their stories and songs were recorded and archived by German linguists. In Knowing by Ear, Anette Hoffmann demonstrates that listening to these acoustic recordings as historical sources, rather than linguistic samples, opens up possibilities for new historical perspectives and the formation of alternate archival practices and knowledge production. She foregrounds the archival presence of individual speakers and positions their recorded voices as responses to their experiences of colonialism, war, and the journey from Africa to Europe. By engaging with the recordings alongside written sources, photographs, and artworks depicting the speakers, Hoffmann personalizes speakers from present-day Senegal, Somalia, Togo, and Congo. Knowing by Ear includes transcriptions of numerous recordings of spoken and sung texts, revealing acoustic archives as significant yet under-researched sources for recovering the historical speaking positions of colonized subjects and listen to the acoustic echo of colonial knowledge production.

These include vision, smell, hearing, touch and taste. That is the reason why responsible parents need to make sure that their children do not suffer from any sort of ear maladies which can possibly lead to deafness as time goes by. I remember taking over a teaching job temporarily for a friend, more than two decades ago. I had to take care of three year old nursery children which was about as perilous a job, as one could ever wish for. Now there was this very bright-eyed little baby boy, who had never spoken a word. His parents were identified that he was deaf, but they had got his ears checked up, to make sure that he was not suffering from any possible birth defects. Three years old, not one peep and not one sound out of him, it was worrying. Until one fine afternoon, he announced to his parents that they had better ask me to be his teacher and his teacher alone because he did not want to share me with the rest of his classmates! When his nearly tearful father asked him why he had not spoken for all these years, he said very practically, that they had made sure that he did not need to talk ever because all his needs were fulfilled. Besides that, they did all the talking all the time so why did he need to talk? This young gentleman is now at college, and one cannot stop him talking. He has a keen debater and intends to argue the point on every small matter whenever he can, However, he can whenever he can. When once I recounted to him episodes in the life and times off a three-year-old, he gives me a “Come off It Ma’am” look. He never talk? Not going to happen. When I was a little child my grandfather often told me about a ritual which the elders practice whenever a child was born. They rang the silver bell behind him, to bring all the good spirits near the new born child to bless it. And if the child followed the sound of the bell, they would consider that it would live a good and virtuous life. According to me, this was the way in which they managed to find out whether the child was not suffering from congenital deafness. Also, I keep wondering about those poor little children, who were scared out of their diapers with that harsh clanging noise however much their elders considered it to be musical. The bell was rung over me, when I was born. According to my grandfather I heard it and set up a howl fit to burst the eardrums of everybody in the vicinity and got all the nurses running to soothe me. This not only proved that I was able to hear, but I was also going to be a potential critic of all the idiotic actions adults did in the future. So this book is going to tell you all about your ears, how to take care of them, and some ailments of the ears, which can be treated either naturally, or by your doctors.

Book excerpt: Incline Your Ear: Cultivating Spiritual Awakening in Congregations introduces faith communities and individuals to the centuries-old principles and practices of spiritual direction. Spiritual direction, as Chad R. Abbott and Teresa Blythe practice and teach it, emphasizes four aspects of the faith journey: becoming more aware of the presence of the Holy in our daily lives, reflecting on that awareness and deepening our relationship with God, discerning where God is leading, and sharing our spiritual gifts with the world. Abbott and Blythe also share simple ways to evaluate the outcomes of spiritual awakening: "fruits of the Spirit." As a middle judicatory minister and spiritual director who work with clergy, lay leaders, and congregations around issues of spiritual life and energy, the authors long for churches to become vital spiritual communities that meet the needs of people right where they are. They strive to nurture congregations where pastors don't have to do it all; where members are equipped to share their gifts with one another; where leaders rest easy, knowing the board has discerned the vision well; and where all discover the rich array of spiritual food Christianity serves. In these complex and confusing times, the authors extend to us an invitation and hope: "Incline your ear... that you may live." As communities of faith study and experience Incline Your Ear together, they will find new ways to be in love with God and listen to the Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses controversial issues in the application of the comparative method to the languages of Australia which have recently come to international prominence. Are these languages ‘different’ in ways that challenge the fundamental assumptions of historical linguistics? Can subgrouping be successfully undertaken using the Comparative Method? Is the genetic construct of a far-flung ‘Pama-Nyungan’ language family supportable by classic methods of reconstruction? Contrary to increasingly established views of the Australian scene, this book makes a major contribution to the demonstration that traditional methods can indeed be applied to these languages. These studies, introduced by chapters on subgrouping methodology and the history of Australian linguistic classification, rigorously apply the comparative method to establishing subgroups among Australian languages and justifying the phonology of Proto-Pama-Nyungan. Individual chapters can profitably be read either for their contribution to Australian linguistic prehistory or as case studies in the application of the comparative method.

Book excerpt: Winner of the American Book Award, the Palestine Book Award and Arrowsmith Press's 2023 Derek Walcott Poetry Prize National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry Finalist “Written from his native Gaza, Abu Toha’s accomplished debut contrasts scenes of political violence with natural beauty."—The New York Times In this poetry debut Mosab Abu Toha writes about his life under siege in Gaza, first as a child, and then as a young father. A survivor of four brutal military attacks, he bears witness to a grinding cycle of destruction and assault, and yet, his poetry is inspired by a profound humanity. These poems emerge directly from the experience of growing up and living in constant lockdown, and often under direct attack. Like Gaza itself, they are filled with rubble and the ever-present menace of surveillance drones policing a people unwelcome in their own land, and they are also suffused with the smell of tea, roses in bloom, and the view of the sea at sunset. Children are born, families continue traditions, students attend university, and libraries rise from the ruins as Palestinians go on about their lives, creating beauty and finding new ways to survive. Accompanied by an in-depth interview (conducted by Ammiel Alcalay) in which Abu Toha discusses life in Gaza, his family origins, and how he came to poetry. Praise for Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear: “Mosab Abu Toha is an astonishingly gifted young poet from Gaza, almost a seer with his eloquent lyrical vernacular … His poems break my heart and awaken it, at the same time. I feel I have been waiting for his work all my life.”—Naomi Shihab Nye “Though forged in the bleak landscape of Gaza, he conjures a radiance that echoes Miłosz and Kabir. These poems are like flowers that grow out of bomb craters and Mosab Abu Toha is an astonishing talent to celebrate.”—Mary Karr "Mosab Abu Toha's Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear arrives with such refreshing clarity and voice amidst a sea of immobilizing self-consciousness. It is no great feat to say a complicated thing in a complicated way, but here is a poet who says it plain: 'In Gaza, some of us cannot completely die.' Later, 'This is how we survived.' It’s remarkable. This is poetry of the highest order."—Kaveh Akbar

The terms "writing by ear," the "aural novel," and "echopoetics" rethink fiction as a poetics of listening to the world.
