Book excerpt: The first book in America to popularize the insights of Rudolf Steiner, founder of the Waldorf schools, regarding the developmental needs of young children, this revised and updated edition offers new ways for parents and educators to enrich the lives of children from birth to age six. Today’s society often pressures us into overstimulating young children with flashcards, workbooks, videos, and electronic gadgets in a well-meaning attempt to give them a head start. But children are not little adults—they learn and grow in radically different ways at different ages, and what we do to help could actually hurt instead. Some of the most important learning years happen before your child reaches school. In You Are Your Child’s First Teacher, respected Waldorf educator Rahima Baldwin Dancy explains the different stages of learning that children go through from birth to age six, giving you the wisdom and understanding to enrich your child’s natural development in the right way at the right time. A trusted classic for over twenty years, this newly revised edition contains updated resources and additional information on discipline, early childhood programs, toilet training, using home life as curriculum, and more. From language and cognitive development to appropriate toys and nourishing your child’s artistic abilities, Dancy speaks up for a rational approach to child-rearing, one that helps children be children while we fulfill our important role as parents and first teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a systematic comparison of the life circumstances, child-rearing practices, and personalities of the FulBe and their former slaves, the RiimaayBe, this book develops an alternative theory of the way personality is formed in the Fulani society of West Africa. Riesman discusses the different characters, economies, and life plans of adult men and women of both groups, focusing on their ideas about the value of relatives. He further presents detailed observations of child-rearing practices, and concludes that the FulBe and RiimaayBe do not differ in these practices. Contrasting Fulani and Western notions of parenting, he suggests that child-rearing practices are themselves irrelevant to the formation of adult personality, but that a people's ideas about the meaning of life, social relations, and the development of character are very important. Finally, Riesman outlines a sociocultural theory of personality and its formation, and uses this theory to make sense of the differences between FulBe and RiimaayBe.

Book excerpt: You are 3 steps away from becoming a more perceptive parent. A one-size-fits-all approach to parenting doesn't work. Parents are faced with hundreds of questions in their child's first years. Breast or bottle? Comfort a 6-month-old child now or let her cry? Allow some TV or none at all? But how meaningful can the answers be when they're offered by someone who doesn't know the parent or the child? Instead of offering answers that apply to "most" families, experienced child-care specialists Claire Lerner and Amy Laura Dombro explain: 1. How parents can understand their own parenting style and its effect on their child; 2. How parents can observe their child to understand what she is feeling and thinking; and 3. How to use those observations to make healthy and effective decisions. With this easy, 3-step approach, parents can learn to become experts on their own child's healthy development. - Cover.
