Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knights and Their Days The custom of receiving arms at the age Of manhood is supposed, by the same author, to have been established among the nations that overthrew the Roman Empire; and he cites the familiar pas sage from Tacitus, descriptive Of this custom among the Germans. At first, little but bodily strength seems to have been required on the part of the candidate. The qualifications and the forms Of investiture changed or improved with the times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Knights Were Bold This book is in no degree an attempt to relate the involved and intricate history of the Middle Ages. Its plan is, rather, to pre sent pictures of the manner of life and habits of thought of the people who lived between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. Our writings and our everyday conversation are full of their phrases and of allusions to their ideas. Many of our thoughts and feelings and instincts, of our very follies and superstitions, have descended to us from them. To become better acquainted with them is to explain ourselves. In selecting from the enormous amount of material, I have sought to choose those customs which were most characteristic of the times and which have made the strongest impression upon the life of to-day, describing each custom when at its height, rather than tracing its development and history. I hope that the volume will be found sufficiently full to serve as a work of reference, and sufficiently interesting to win its way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knights Templars The favourable reception given to the first edition of the ensuing work, and the interest that was taken in the extraordinary and romantic career of the Knights Templars, induced me to publish a second edition greatly enlarged, and to introduce various collateral matters of an antiquarian and local character, interesting only to a comparatively small number of readers. This enlarged edition having been exhausted, it occurred to me, in preparing a third edition for the press, that the work might be materially shortened and reduced in price without in anywise detracting from its value and interest as a record of the chief events of one of the most remarkable and interesting periods of history, and of the extraordinary and romantic achievements of the first and most ancient of the great religio-military orders of knights and monks established during the crusades. The dry matters of detail, of local and partial interest, which interfered with the continuity of the main narrative, have been struck out of the body of the work, and the more striking incidents of the history have been thus brought into greater prominence. The long Latin and French extracts from the old chronicles have also been discarded from the notes, but the historical references have been preserved to enable the reader, if he thinks fit, to study the quaint and curious language of the originals. By these means, and by enlarging the size of the page, the work has been compressed into a smaller compass, and the price reduced nearly one half. It is hoped that these alterations will be found to be improvements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knights of to-Day: Or Love and Science She was a beauty. From head-light to buffer-casting, from spark-arrester to air-brake coupling, she shone resplendent. A thing of grace and power, she seemed instinct with life as she paused upon her breathless flight. Even while resting quietly upon the track, she trembled with the pulsations of her mighty heart. Small wonder that the passengers waiting upon the platform came down to gaze upon the great express engine, No. 59. She seemed long and slender like a greyhound, and her glistening sides, delicate forefeet, and uplifted head were suggestive of speed and power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knights of England, Vol. 1: A Complete Record From the Earliest Time to the Present Day of the Knights of All the Orders of Chivalry in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of Knights Bachelors The second alternative method is to gazette only the date of investiture (using that term for the moment as inclusive Of the ceremony of dubbing) and to reckon all precedence from that date. This would be very precise, and would conform to the common sense conclusion that a man is not a knight till he is dubbed, and that a man cannot be a knight of an order until he has been first dubbed and then invested. There is only one forcible Objection to this second method, and that is, that if the mere investiture were gazetted the outside world would miss the historical cause or reason for the conferring of the dignity. But this could be easily overcome by a note of the date of appointment accompanied by a brief description of occasion, or statement Of services, to be placed in brackets after the name of each person invested or dubbed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Arthur's Knights: The Tales Re-Told for Boys Girls This book is an attempt to tell some of the stories of King Arthur and his Knights in a way which will be interesting to every boy and girl who loves adventures. Although tales of these old British heroes have been published before in a form intended for young people, it is believed that they have never been related quite in the same spirit nor from the same point of view; and it is hoped that the book will fill a place hitherto vacant in the hearts of all boys and girls. No doubt many of. you my young readers, have at some time or another taken down the Morte D'Arthur from your father's, bookshelves and read a few pages of it here and there. But I doubt if any of you have ever gone very far in the volume. You found generally, I think, that it was written in a puzzling, old-fashioned language, that though it spoke of many interesting things, and seemed that it ought to be well worth reading, yet somehow it was tedious and dry. In the tales as I have retold them for you, I hope you will not find any of these faults. Besides writing them in simple language, I have chosen only those episodes which I know would appeal to you. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Work of the Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus is primarily and essentially a fraternal society, but the order has never permitted itself to be circumscribed Within the narrow limits of insurance benefits and selfish social interests. It has from its very inception fostered and exercised that broader spirit of fraternity Which signalizes the history of the Knights of Columbus as a record of service ttod, to country, and to our fellow man. A new page of that history is being written. The story of the educational Work in Which the order has been engaged during the past four years is an interesting record of achievement. In the following report of the results that have been accomplished We do not profess to set forth completely their value to the order, to the N ation, and to the students Who have participated in the educational opportunities that We have offered. These results can not now be appraised in all their fullness, for, though they are in some degree immediate and tangible, in a larger sense they are of the future, and time alone can be their measure and their test.
