Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note from the Author Hi, my name is Dharmesh, and I’m a startup addict. And, chances are, if you’re reading this, you have at least a mild obsession as well. This book is based on content from the OnStartups.com blog. The story behind how the blog got started is sort of interesting—but before I tell you that story, it’ll help to understand my earlier story. As a professional programmer, I used to work in a reasonably fun job doing what I liked to do (write code). Eventually, I got a little frustrated with it all, so at the ripe old age of 24, I started my first software company. It did pretty well. It was on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies three times. It reached millions of dollars of sales and was ultimately acquired. I ran that first company for over 10 years working the typical startup hours. When I sold that company, I went back to school to get a master’s degree at MIT. I’ve always enjoyed academics, and I figured this would be a nice “soft landing” and give me some time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. As part of my degree requirements, I had to write a graduate thesis. I titled my thesis “On Startups: Patterns and Practices of Contemporary Software Entrepreneurs.” And, as part of that thesis work, I wanted to get some feedback from some entrepreneurs. So, I figured I’d start a blog. I took the first two words of the thesis title, “On Startups,” discovered that the domain name OnStartups.com was available, and was then off to the races. The blog was launched on November 5, 2005. Since then, the blog and associated community have grown quite large. Across Facebook, LinkedIn, and email subscribers, there are over 300,000 people in the OnStartups.com audience. This book is a collection of some of the best articles from over 7 years of OnStartups.com. The articles have been topically organized and edited. I hope you enjoy them.

Book excerpt: Identify and Manage the Influence Paths That Convert Brand Awareness to Customer Acquisition! Today, you face a brutally tough, maddeningly elusive new competitor: the “wisdom of crowds.” Social media gives consumers 24x7 access to the attitudes and recommendations of their most engaged peers. These are the views that shape buying decisions. These are the views you must shape and use. Influence Marketing won’t just help you identify and enlist key influencers: it will help you manage the influence paths that lead consumers to buy. By sharing empirical evidence of hard-won lessons from pioneering influence marketers, Danny Brown and Sam Fiorella provide a blueprint that moves influence marketing beyond simple brand awareness and into sales acquisition and customer life time value measurement. They integrate new tools and techniques into a complete methodology for generating more and better leads—and converting them faster, at higher margins. • Put the customer—not the influencer—at the center, and plan influence marketing accordingly • Recognize where each prospect stands in the purchase life cycle right now • Clarify how your consumers move from brand preference to purchase • Identify key micro-influencers who impact decisions at every stage • Gain indispensable insights into the context of online relationships • Recognize situational factors that derail social media brand recommendations • Understand social influence scoring models and overcome their limitations • Re-engineer and predict influence paths to generate measurable action • Master the “4 Ms” of influence marketing: make, manage, monitor, measure • Transform influence marketing from a “nice-to-have” exercise into a powerful strategy Additional online resources can be found at www.influencemarketingbook.com

Social Media is the biggest thing happening to the customer service industry since the mid 1960s when modern day call centres were born. It is taking customers and organisations into untested ways of relating: transparently, collaboratively, instantly. The consequences of great and poor service are forever changed. Customer appetite has promoted this form of interaction to the very front of a race to understand. How do digital brands and empowered customers actually behave? Social Customer Service has become Marketing’s R&D lab and a listening hub for the rest of the organisation. It is now where corporate reputations are most likely to be won and lost. ‘Delivering Effective Social Customer Service’ is a complete reference for achieving excellence in this new discipline. It caters to both novice and expert. It is perfect source material for service leaders and digital marketers to read together. Every CXO will recognise in the book a blueprint from which to build their next generation organisation. Even ambitious team leaders should snag a copy for instant subject matter expertise kudos! The centre of the book offers an in depth self-assessment of the competencies that matter. The book is jammed full of strategic insight, action lists, best practice tips and interviews. All the resources anyone needs to build a solid strategy and roadmap. Early adopter workshops based on the book have already taken place and will continue to be offered as another way of engaging with the book’s key lessons. An online resource of the reference material is also provided. Options for an online community are under consideration. This book is the first of its kind. Book excerpt: The bestselling co-author of The Go-Giver offers new insights into what it means to be truly influential Faced with the task of persuading someone to do what we want, most of us expect resistance. We see the other person as an adversary and often resort to coercion or manipulation to get our way. But while this approach might bring us short-term results, it leaves people with a bad feeling about themselves and about us. At that point, our relationship is weakened and our influence dramatically decreased. There has to be a better way. Drawing on his own experiences and the stories of other influential people, communication expert Bob Burg offers five simple principles of what he calls Ultimate Influence—the ability to win people to your side in a way that leaves everyone feeling great about the outcome. In the tradition of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, Burg offers a tried-and-true framework for building alliances at work, at home, and anywhere else you seek to win people over.

Book excerpt: Build a powerful social media strategy to increase buzz—and the bottom line In today’s fast-paced professional climate, large companies are learning that launching a website and taking a wait-and-see approach to engaging customers is not enough. Competition is fierce, and those who master the social media space are the ones who come out on top. There is greater urgency than ever before to establish a vibrant social media program—and it all starts with a key strategist who can best organize and leverage all of the organization’s resources to cut through the bureaucracy and get real-time results. This is where The Social Media Strategist comes in. Before tackling specific social media programs, you first have to get your own organization—and everyone in it—on board with making social media a business strategy priority. Christopher Barger, the award-winning former social media director at General Motors and IBM’s former “blogger-in-chief,” describes all the challenges particular to getting a comprehensive social media program off the ground in a large firm. The Social Media Strategist teaches you how to: Manage internal office politics, from your legal team to the policy makers to the human resource department Present new ideas to lawyers and executives in a compelling, convincing way Teach your employees the guidelines and protocols they’ll need to represent your company Turn your organization into a true media outlet, publishing content that is generated by in-house employees and is truly engaging to an outside audience “Telling a company from the outside what it should do is one thing,” writes Barger. “Actually making it happen from the inside is quite another.” Here, he takes the bold step of starting where all successful endeavors begin: by planning well, by putting all the moving parts in the right place, by constructing a solid foundation. Consult The Social Media Strategist and build the best-suited social media infrastructure for your company. Then, and only then, can you begin to raise your profile, connect with customers, and increase your profits using the most powerful new business tool.

Book excerpt: The "buzz" surrounding social media focuses on how business can build relationships by participating in the online "conversation". When it works, social media relationship building is often labor and time intensive with a return on investment that is often hard to measure. Not many people understand that social media campaigns can be orchestrated to build relationships and drive in new business at a much greater rate than using the relationship aspect of social media alone provides. When I discovered this, relationship building became the least compelling part of the picture. "Searchial" is a phrase I created to describe the method of interacting within the strange new world of social media while elevating your profile in internet searches for the products and services you offer. This book teaches do-it-yourself methods of implementing a "searchial" media campaign. It demonstrates the added value of practicing "searchial media" instead of just "social media". Social tools have the power to drive new business into your organization not only through communicating and relationship building, but by coincidentally causing your listing in search engines to rank higher in searches for keywords and key phrases people are using to find the products and services you offer in a specific geographical area or worldwide. The term "Searchial" reflects the realization that my time and effort were best spent driving new patients into my medical practice using social tools to improve our position in Google, Bing and other search engines, not just building and strengthening existing relationships. This book can be applied to and used as a guide within any industry at any stage of the new media marketing game. Appendices contain information specific to social media and search elevation in the medical profession, specifically small medical business, hospital and clinic and pharmaceutical companies.
