Interkulturelles Lernen ist ein Schwerpunkt der Englischdidaktik: Schüler sollen andere Kulturen kennen lernen und ihre Erfahrungen mit fremden Menschen, Sprachen und Bräuchen auf der Basis ihrer eigenen Kultur machen. Im Klassenraum interkulturell zu arbeiten ist möglich, wie viele Publikationen zeigen. Ich erlebte aber in meinen Hospitationen und Praktika an sachsen-anhaltinischen Schulen und meinen Nachhilfetätigkeiten mit Schülern, dass es sich als schwierig erweist, den Schülern dort reale interkulturelle Situationen zu bieten. Ich musste feststellen, dass der Englischunterricht konstruiert ist und auf die Institution Schule begrenzt bleibt, d.h. nicht die Lebenswirklichkeit der Schüler einbezieht. Zunächst erscheint es mir angesichts der zahlreichen Publikationen zum Thema "Inter-kulturellen Lernen" wichtig, eine Orientierung für den Leser zu schaffen, was interkulturelles Lernen bedeutet und welche Konzepte es umfasst. Im zweiten Kapitel wird daher versucht, durch ein stimmiges Kultur-Konzept die beim interkulturellen Lernen zu erwerbenden interkulturellen Kompetenzen und ihre Integration in das schulische Lernen zu rechtfertigen. Im dritten Kapitel stelle ich kurz unterschiedliche Konzepte internationaler Begegnungen vor und diskutiere ihren Wert für das interkulturelle Lernen. Danach werden wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zur Organisation einer für den Erwerb der interkulturellen Kompetenz wertvollen Begegnung zusammengetragen und mit praktischen Beispielen versehen. In Anbetracht einer zunehmenden Vernetzung über geographische, nationale, kulturelle und sprachliche Grenzen hinweg, global agierender Firmen und Institutionen sowie weltweiten Reise-, Fortbildungs- und Arbeitsmöglichkeiten wird die heutige Gesellschaft zunehmend mit „kultureller Diversität und Alterität“ (Antor, 2007: 111) konfrontiert. Deshalb gewinnen gerade für Berufstätige diejenigen Kompetenzen an Bedeutung, „die zur Bewältigung dieser neuen und komplexen internationalen und interkulturellen Handlungsfelder beitragen“ (Bernhard, 2002: 193). Somit entstehen im Kontext der Internationalisierung, Multikulturalität und Globalisierung neue qualifikatorische Anforderungen. Vor diesem Hintergrund erfährt die schulische Fremdsprachendidaktik eine neue Legitimation ihrer unterrichtlichen Ausrichtung auf interkulturelles Lernen und die Ausbildung interkultureller Kompetenz. Genau damit soll sich in der vorliegenden Hausarbeit beschäftigt werden. Dazu soll interkulturelle Kompetenz zunächst als solche beleuchtet und definiert werden, um anschließend auf die Vermittlung im modernen Fremdsprachenunterricht einzugehen. Da interkulturelle Schüleraustauschprogramme als besonders fruchtbares Lernfeld gelten, soll sich der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit mit Empfehlungen einer geeigneten, didaktischen Umsetzung, der Vielfalt möglicher Austauschprogramme sowie der Wirkungsweise auf beteiligte Personen und den Austauschschüler selbst beschäftigen.
