Book Synopsis Creative Conservation by : P.J. Olney
Download or read book Creative Conservation written by P.J. Olney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past progress and future challenges R.J. Wheater Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK. In the past two decades much has been achieved in the sphere of breeding endangered species, and we should be pleased that our co operative efforts have already borne so much fruit. However, on balance and despite the best efforts of conservationists, the position of wildlife in the wild places where they are best conserved has become worse, often dramatically worse. Before returning to the United Kingdom in 1972, I was in Uganda for 16 years, most of which time was spent as Chief Warden of Murchison Falls National Park. Our main problem was that an over-population of large mammals was having a devastating impact on the habitat. Devas tation was being wrought on woodland areas by the arrival of large numbers of elephants into the sanctuary of the Park, following changes in land use in the areas outside the Park. These changes were in response to the requirements of an ever-expanding human population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you at risk for autoimmune disease? Do you feel frequently tired, irritable or under the weather? Are you experiencing achiness, brain fog or weight problems? Then it's time to take action. Has your doctor recently told you that an autoimmune test, such as a test for antinuclear antibodies (ANA), is equivocal, borderline, or positive? If so, you are at risk for autoimmune disease. Like an automobile that needs coolant and an oil change, this is the time to take action--fast! The AUTOIMMUNE DIET AND RECOVERY PLAN offers the information you're looking for, now. Traditional allopathic physicians offer powerful pharmaceutical therapies that can address some of the issues relating to an overly active immune system, but at a very great cost. This book shares an up?to?date summary of research and available, natural treatments and therapies to use today.

Book Synopsis The Welfare of Farmed Ratites by : Phil Glatz
Download or read book The Welfare of Farmed Ratites written by Phil Glatz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews, for the first time, the broad range of issues that affect the welfare of commercially farmed ratites. Although ratites incorporate several families of flightless birds this book focuses on the most commonly farmed ratites, the ostrich, emu and rhea. The readers are taken on a journey through all sectors of the industry, which include breeding, incubation, hatching, brooding, rearing, growth, transport and processing, with an emphasis on husbandry and management protocols that can impact bird welfare and health. Also discussed is the structure and sensory innervation of the skin and digits of the birds, and the potential welfare implications of industry practices on these structures. Each chapter in this volume focuses on a particular aspect of the commercial farming of ratites with contributing authors from a broad range of disciplines.
Download or read book Mountains written by James Fargo Balliett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Always awe-inspiring, mountainous areas contain hundreds of millions of years of history, stretching back to the earliest continental landforms. This book shows how mountains are characterized by their distinctive geological, ecological, and biological conditions. Often, they are so large that they create their own weather patterns. They also store nearly one-third of the world’s freshwater—in the form of ice and snow—on their slopes. Despite their daunting size and often formidable climates, mountains are affected by growing local populations, as well as distant influences, such as air pollution and global climate change. Three detailed case studies are presented. The first shows how global warming in East Africa is harming Mount Kenya’s regional population, which relies on mountain runoff to irrigate farms for subsistence crops. The second examines the fragile ecology of the South Island Mountain in New Zealand’s Southern Alps and how development threatens the region’s endemic plant and animal species. The third discusses the impact of mountain use over time in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, where management efforts have been used to limit the growing footprint of millions of annual visitors and alpine trekkers.
