Book excerpt: For fans of Mieko Kawakami’s Breasts and Eggs and Murata Sayaka’s Earthlings, this Japanese bestseller from renowned anime director Makoto Shinkai features four inspirational and heartwarming vignettes following women and their cats in their quests for love and connection. Lying alone on the edge of the sidewalk in an abandoned cardboard box, a nameless narrator contemplates the indifferent world around him. With his mother long gone, his only company is the sound of the nearby train. Just as he fears that the end is near, a young woman peers down at him, this fateful encounter changing their lives forever. So begins the first story in She and Her Cat, a collection of four interrelated, stream-of-conscious short stories in which four women and their feline companions explore the frailty of life, the pain of isolation, and the limits of communication. With clever narration alternating between the cats and their owners, She and Her Cat offers a unique and sly commentary on human foibles and our desire for connection. A whimsical short story anthology unlike any other, it effortlessly demonstrates that even in our darkest, most lonesome moments, we are still united to this wonderous world—often in ways we could never have expected.

Book excerpt: Heirs to a cultural literacy rich in Mexican and American influences, modern Chicano writers combine an urgent sense of social protest with a vibrant literary style. Containing contributions from both recognized scholars such as Américo Paredes, Luis Leal, and Felipe Ortego and younger critics, including Yvonne Yabro-Bejarano, Ralph Grajeda and Marta Sánchez, Modern Chicano writers affirms the dynamic blending of continuity and change that characterizes the modern Chicano writer. Beginning with a series of five "framing" articles, the editors establish the literary history, folk culture, critical theory and sociolinguistics surrounding the Chicano people. Other critiques examine the narrative techniques of Tomás Rivera and his opposing themes of resignation and rebellion, the poet Alurista and his use of traditional mythology to convey contemporary social concerns, and the relationof popular art to the Chicano struggle for cultural identity in El Teatro Campesino. This volume presents a unique collection of critical commentaries that explore the development and future direction of modern Chicano literature.

Book excerpt: The collection of articles in Discourse Studies in Public Communication illustrates that public communication is a fascinating, evidence-based storehouse for research in discourse analysis. The contributions to this volume — in the spheres of political rhetoric, gender and sexuality, and corporate and academic communication — provide good evidence of contemporary social structure, social phenomena, and social issues. In this way, following the parameters of different analytical frameworks (critical discourse analysis, cognitive metaphor theory, appraisal theory, multimodality, etc.), the contributors address not only the linguistic aspects of texts but also, and more importantly, the cultural and cognitive dimensions of public communication in a range of real life communicative contexts and kinds of discourse. Although the volume is addressed, first and foremost, to readers with diverse interests in English linguistics, it may also prove valuable to scholars in other non-linguistic research fields like communication studies, social theory, political science, or psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables, also called Aesopica, are a collection of fables attributed to Aesop, a slave and storyteller who is said to have lived between 620 and 564 BC in ancient Greece. Once upon a time, long ago in a far-off land, all things and beings not only had consciousness, but could also communicate in the same language. These stories contain distilled wisdom and can be used with great effect. They teach moral lessons, above all about love and respect, and greed and all the inner demons that constantly plague us. The allegories in the fables are sophisticated and rich. Normally, animals are the protagonists, perhaps because the depiction of human behavior, especially the contemptible kind, reflected in our animal world companions, makes it easier for us to recognize the root of evil. That is Aesop's world. The key to it lies in the observation that mutual understanding does not arise simply from all things understanding each other; no, that's where the fun begins. The fables are good reading for children. But at the same time, they are amazingly entertaining for adults. In short, they directly target human everyday experiences that everyone knows and makes every day. The book at A2 language level offers a parallel translation that allows the reader to learn the Spanish language in a shorter time. At a glance, it is immediately apparent what unknown words mean. The audio files are included and available online. With the help of QR codes, you can access an audio file in no time without having to manually type in web addresses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex hierarchic syntax is considered one of the hallmarks of human language. The highest level of syntactic complexity, recursive-embedded clauses, has been singled out by some for a special status as the apex of the uniquely-human language faculty – evolutionary but somehow immune to adaptive selection. This volume, coming out of a symposium held at Rice University in March 2008, tackles syntactic complexity from multiple developmental perspectives. We take it for granted that grammar is an adaptive instrument of communication, assembled upon the pre-existing platform of pre-linguistic cognition. Most of the papers in the volume deal with the two grand developmental trends of human language: diachrony, the communal enterprise directly responsible for fashioning synchronic morpho-syntax; and ontogeny, the individual endeavor directly responsible for the acquisition of competent grammatical performance. The genesis of syntactic complexity along these two developmental trends is considered alongside with the cognition and neurology of grammar and of syntactic complexity, and the evolutionary relevance of diachrony, ontogeny and pidginization is argued on general bio-evolutionary grounds. Lastly, several of the contributions to the volume suggest that recursive embedding is not in itself an adaptive target, but rather the by-product of two distinct adaptive gambits: the recruitment of conjoined clauses as modal operators on other clauses and the subsequent condensation of paratactic into syntactic structures.
