Book Synopsis Modern Chicano Writers by : Joseph Sommers
Download or read book Modern Chicano Writers written by Joseph Sommers and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1979 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heirs to a cultural literacy rich in Mexican and American influences, modern Chicano writers combine an urgent sense of social protest with a vibrant literary style. Containing contributions from both recognized scholars such as Américo Paredes, Luis Leal, and Felipe Ortego and younger critics, including Yvonne Yabro-Bejarano, Ralph Grajeda and Marta Sánchez, Modern Chicano writers affirms the dynamic blending of continuity and change that characterizes the modern Chicano writer. Beginning with a series of five "framing" articles, the editors establish the literary history, folk culture, critical theory and sociolinguistics surrounding the Chicano people. Other critiques examine the narrative techniques of Tomás Rivera and his opposing themes of resignation and rebellion, the poet Alurista and his use of traditional mythology to convey contemporary social concerns, and the relationof popular art to the Chicano struggle for cultural identity in El Teatro Campesino. This volume presents a unique collection of critical commentaries that explore the development and future direction of modern Chicano literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Passionate Subjects/split Subjects in Twentieth-century Literature in Chile by : Bernardita Llanos M.
Download or read book Passionate Subjects/split Subjects in Twentieth-century Literature in Chile written by Bernardita Llanos M. and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the literary imaginaries of the twentieth century there is a reiteration of an authoritarian patriarchal pattern that permeates the social arena as well as the female subject, revealing the contradictions of the Chilean modernity/modernization process. The nation appears invariably determined by semi-feudal and semi-modern structures as well as split female modern subjects. Noticing this has led the author to write this book and investigate specifically the ways the discourse of modernity conflicts with the marriage contract in the construction of feminine subjectivity. Marriage is one of the modern protocols that resolve sexual difference through a pact that proclaims male protection in exchange for female obedience. Subordination of difference becomes the overarching feature guiding an incomplete modernity and its attainment in a hierarchical society.

Download or read book She and Her Cat written by Makoto Shinkai and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Mieko Kawakami’s Breasts and Eggs and Murata Sayaka’s Earthlings, this Japanese bestseller from renowned anime director Makoto Shinkai features four inspirational and heartwarming vignettes following women and their cats in their quests for love and connection. Lying alone on the edge of the sidewalk in an abandoned cardboard box, a nameless narrator contemplates the indifferent world around him. With his mother long gone, his only company is the sound of the nearby train. Just as he fears that the end is near, a young woman peers down at him, this fateful encounter changing their lives forever. So begins the first story in She and Her Cat, a collection of four interrelated, stream-of-conscious short stories in which four women and their feline companions explore the frailty of life, the pain of isolation, and the limits of communication. With clever narration alternating between the cats and their owners, She and Her Cat offers a unique and sly commentary on human foibles and our desire for connection. A whimsical short story anthology unlike any other, it effortlessly demonstrates that even in our darkest, most lonesome moments, we are still united to this wonderous world—often in ways we could never have expected.
