As a Sportsman The natural idea of a volume on King Edward VII. As a Sportsman occurred to Messrs. Longman early in the year 1910. To obtain His Majesty's gracious permission was, of course, the first step, and this he was pleased to accord, condescending to suggest where certain material might be obtained, and to approve of the work being given into my hands. Only a little progress had been made when the King's deeply lamented death - how far this is from any conventional expression of grief need not be emphasised - threw his subjects into mourning and caused heartfelt distress far beyond the limits of his rule. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of King Edward VII During a number of years' study of British institutions in their modern development and of British public life in its adjustment to new and changing conditions I have felt an ever-growing appreciation of the active influence exercised by the present Sovereign of the British Empire upon the social life and public interests of the United Kingdom and an ever-increasing admiration for his natural abilities and rare tactfulness of character. King Edward the Seventh, in a sixty years' tenure of the difficult position of Heir to the British Throne, has built into the history of his country and Empire a record of which he and his people have every reason to be proud. He had for many years the responsibilities of a Royal position without the actual power; the public functions of a great ruler without the resources usually available; the knowledge, experience and statecraft of a wise Sovereign without the Regal environment. The Prince of Wales, however, rose above the apparent difficulties of his position and for more than a quarter of a century has emulated the wise example of his princely father - Albert the Good - and profited by the beautiful character and unquestioned statesmanship of his august mother. As with all those upon whose life beats the glare of ever-present publicity and upon whose actions the press of friendly and hostile nations alike have the privilege of ceaseless comment, the Heir to the British Throne has had to suffer from atrocious canards as well as from fulsome compliments. Unlike many others, however, he has lived down the falsehoods of an early About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Edward VII as a Man and Monarch: A Memorial Address Puritans and Cavaliers, there was engendered an estrangement which con tinued to a certain extent for over a century, as the heritage of a family feud; and there have been occasions when this estrangement blazed forth into demonstrations of actual hostility. The original quarrel was that of English man against Englishman - of the refusal of the stay-at - home brother to con cede to the brother who had come across the seas to found a new England the rights and privileges which were undisputably his in the old Mother Land: - that there should be no taxation without representation. It was the proverb iai story of a family quarrel - which is notoriously generally more bitter than one between strangers; and for centuries the race had established a reputation not only of being splendid fighters, but of being self-opinionated and stiff necked; and once having taken up a quarrel, these British and American kins men - both of the same blood and of the same ideas of liberty - not only stubbornly fought it out, but neither side was in a particular hurry to fall over the neck of the other and pretend that they were as long-lost brothers. Then, each was too busy with his own affairs to bother much about matters of senti ment outside concerns of present moment. The American had a wilderness more than the third of a Continent - to subdue; the Britisher went forth and commenced anew to build up his Empire, - and, contrary to prophecies when the American colonies established their independence, the British ag now ies over a far greater extent of territory than in the fateful year of I776. Though the triumph has been reserved for his successor, the story of King Edward's life is nevertheless rich in interest, and worthy to be told on an ample scale. These volumes are an attempt to unfold it in such fashion as will depict the Man and the Sovereign, and will narrate the public affairs of the years of his life especially in so far as his personal in uence is traceable in them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Edward VII, His Life and Reign, Vol. 1: The Record of a Noble Career Throughout his course of life a naturally quick temper was held in control; he was ever most affectionate in family relations, ever a faithful friend, and a sure keeper of countless secrets confided to his care. His courtesy to persons in the most humble walks of life was as unfailing as'that displayed to those in a rank next the throne. A deputation of working men always left his presence, when he was Prince of Wales, with the conviction of his earnest sympathy with their troubles, and with a most grateful sense of his courteous behaviour. The London cabmen and the London police received from him, on certain occasions, emphatic public testimony to the merits which none but ill-natured and prejudiced people would attempt to deny. In his readiness to afford the people in provincial towns the longed-for opportunity of gazing upon him, he rode in open carriages, with personal discomfort, amid wintry cold and in storms of rain. Such a man could hardly fail to enjoy, in the best sense, what is called popularity We conclude this part of our subject by a refer ence to the breadth and diversity of intellectual culture possessed by him. Rarely, indeed, did any man receive such a training for such a position. The son of a most able and accomplished father, he was carefully educated by tutors chosen under the best advice. The teaching of his boyhood was followed by a brief university course at Edinburgh, Oxford, and Cambridge, where he received the soundest instruction from the ablest men in their several departments. His mind, in early and later manhood, was further developed and enlarged by travel extending to all the continents save Australia. In wanderings many, not of suffering, risk, and toilsome adventure, as in those of the Homeric hero, but of profitable and pleasurable ease, the King was a veritable modern Ulysses. Many men and cities he saw and knew, and many ways of mankind, and this knowledge he turned, on many occasions, to good account in social and political affairs as one of the best of non-professional diplomatists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Edward VII, His Life and Reign, Vol. 5: The Record of a Noble Career Before describing the proceedings attendant on the accession of the new Sovereign, we deal with those which followed the decease of his predecessor. While the needful ceremonies were being enacted on the advent of King Edward the Seventh to the throne, the preparations for the funeral of Queen Victoria were in progress, and due recognition was being made of the great public loss sustained. The pall for the late Sovereign's coffin was embroidered at the Royal School of Art N eedlework at South Kensington. On January 27 the sermon at Westminster Abbey was preached by Dean Bradley on the texts: For David, after he had served his own generation, by the will of God fell on sleep and was laid unto his fathers, and Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. At St. George's Chapel, Windsor, the Dean, Dr. Eliot, preached from: The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away At St. Paul's Cathedral, the Archbishop of Canterbury (dr. Temple) said in his sermon: 'ishe was a great Queen because she was so good a Queen. She respected our freedom, she won our hearts, she held high the standard of conscientious conduct before the eyes of all the world. Throughout the Empire, flags half mast, memorial services, and mourning attire recognized the event, testifying to the grief of the late Queen's subjects, while all hailed with joy and hope the accession of the new ruler.
