Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to use a mixed flow reactor system to determine the dissolution rate and infer potential mechanisms of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) oxidation by dissolved oxygen at 25 C and circumneutral pH. Release rates for iron, arsenic and sulfur are calculated for a variety of initial dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Results indicate that the rate of arsenopyrite oxidation, represented by the rate law r = A(6.76 x 10-11) where the rate, r, is in mol/s and surface area, A, is in m2, is not significantly dependent on DO concentration. Arsenic and sulfur are released in a 1:1 molar ratio while iron is released more slowly due to precipitation of iron oxyhydroxides. Our results suggest that the rate determining step in arsenopyrite oxidation is determined by the attachment of oxygen at the anodic site in the mineral, and not the transfer of electrons from the cathodic site to oxygen, as is suggested for other sulfide minerals such as pyrite. Previous work on FeAsS oxidation has been limited to low pH conditions with ferric iron as the oxidant. However, not all arsenopyrite weathering occurs exclusively in acidic environments. For example, at an abandoned arsenopyrite mine in Virginia, the pH of ground and surface waters is consistently between 4 and 7. Results of this study provide important insight to arsenic mobilization processes and rates, at field-relevant conditions, consequently aiding in the effort to understand arsenic release and retention in the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater resources naturally contain high levels of arsenic in many parts of the world. Over the last two decades, the As-containing groundwater in South-East Asia has received much attention, but the situation is just as crucial in Latin America, where the number of studies is still relatively low, and the extent and severity of As-exposure in the populations has yet to be fully evaluated. This book aims to promote knowledge of the occurrence and genesis of As-rich groundwater in Latin America. It deals with constraints on the mobility of As in groundwater, As-uptake from soil and water by plants, As-propagation through the food chain, human health impacts, and As-removal technologies. Case studies are presented from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru, amongst others, and are viewed against the background of experience from other world regions. The book is a state-of-art overview of arsenic research in Latin America. It aims to create interest within the Latin American countries affected by the presence of arseniferous aquifers and to increase awareness among administrators, policy makers and company executives. It will also serve to inform the international scientific community, and improve international cooperation on arsenic in groundwater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 35 of Reviews in Mineralogy defines and explore the topic of geomicrobiology. It is organized so as to first introduce the nature, diversity, and metabolic impact of microorganisms and the types of solid phases they interact with. This is followed by a discussion of processes that occur at cell surfaces, interfaces between microbes and minerals, and within cells, and the resulting mineral precipitation, dissolution, and changes in aqueous geochemistry. The volume concludes with a discussion of the carbon cycle over geologic time. Basis for this volume was the Short Course on Geomicrobiology presented by the Mineralogical Society of America on October 18 and 19, 1997, at the Alta Peruvian Lodge in Alta, Utah.

The research in this area is motivated by the locally severe environmental impacts and toxicity associated with the products of sulfide oxidation. Thirty- nine multidisciplinary papers address various aspects of sulfide oxidation: laboratory studies of kinetics; numerical modeling in tailings, waste rock, and in situ deposits; solubility and sorption control in formation of sulfide-oxidation products; transport products in surface waters, and in sediments; effects on ground-water geochemistry; processes in wetlands and the oceans; analytical methods; and remediation and prevention of environmental effects. Book excerpt: Geochemical kinetics as a topic is now of importance to a wide range of geochemists in academia, industry, and government, and all geochemists need a rudimentary knowledge of the field. This book summarizes the fundamentals of geochemical kinetics with examples drawn especially from mineral dissolution and precipitation. It also encompasses discussion of high temperature processes and global geochemical cycle modeling. Analysis of textures of rocks, sediments, and mineral surfaces are incorporated throughout and provide a sub-theme of the book.
