Book excerpt: Thermal neutrons are of considerable interest to the Department of Defense and for commercial applications. Unlike high energy photons, neutrons easily penetrate high density targets, but get effectively absorbed by low density materials like paraffin, nylon or explosives. This makes them attractive complements to X-rays for radiographic applications, e.g. for the detection or inspection of explosives inside steel casings. The key challenge is to develop a compact generator for thermal neutrons with large enough flux. The limited availability of radio-isotopes, combined with the relatively short half-life, safety constraints and regulatory requirements make them unattractive for wide-spread use. An alternative design exploits the Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) fusion, which generates Alpha particles and fast neutrons. In these sources, Deuterium ions are accelerated to about 130 keV and hit a Tritium target. The acceleration of Deuterium ions is usually accomplished in a diode configuration. Recently, considerable success has been achieved in the acceleration of ions via laser-matter interaction. In this project we investigated whether laser-accelerated ions could undergo nuclear fusion in an adequately designed target and could be used for neutron sources. We therefore enhanced our proprietary plasma simulation code VORPAL with a model for fusion reactions and investigated the generation of neutrons in shaped D-T targets. We find that neutron fluxes large enough for radiographic applications can be generated by utilizing moderate (~ 10(exp 17)-10(exp 18) W/sq cm) laser intensities.

Book excerpt: Ablation of materials by nanosecond laser pulses involves expansion of a laser-induced vapor plume into a background gas. The absorption of the incident laser radiation by the plume can substantially decrease the amount of laser energy absorbed directly by the target, and, correspondingly, the amount of the ablated material. This plasma shielding effect limits the overall efficiency of industrial laser systems designed for material removal applications. The goal of the present work is to numerically study the expansion process of plumes induced by irradiation of a metal target by bursts or groups of nanosecond laser pulses and to reveal the implications of the interaction between plumes induced by individual pulses for the efficiency of material removal. The plume expansion induced by irradiation of a copper target in argon background gas is studied based on one- and two-dimensional hybrid computational models that include a hydrodynamic or kinetic model of plasma plumes. The hydrodynamic model is based on finite-difference solution of gas dynamics equations. The kinetic model is implemented in the form of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In this work, the generalization of the DSMC method for plasma flows is developed. The effects of laser fluence, spot size, inter-pulse separation, and background gas pressure are thoroughly studied. The numerical simulations of plume expansion induced by a burst of pulses indicate the formation of complicated flow structures with cascades of the primary and secondary shock waves and strong interaction between plumes induced by individual pulses. The simulations reveal the plume accumulation effect when the plumes induced by preceding pulses in a burst change conditions of propagation of plumes generated by subsequent pulses. The degree of plasma shielding increases with increasing number of laser pulses due to the plume accumulation effect. It results in reduction of the effectiveness of material removal by the subsequent pulses. The degrees of the plasma shielding and plume accumulation effects strongly depend on the inter-pulse separation and laser spot size. The trade-off between the plume accumulation and thermal accumulation effects maximizes the ablation depth per pulse at a certain value of the time delay between pulses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is on inertial confinement fusion, an alternative way to produce electrical power from hydrogen fuel by using powerful lasers or particle beams. It involves the compression of tiny amounts (micrograms) of fuel to thousand times solid density and pressures otherwise existing only in the centre of stars. Thanks to advances in laser technology, it is now possible to produce such extreme states of matter in the laboratory. Recent developments have boosted laser intensities again with new possibilities for laser particle accelerators, laser nuclear physics, and fast ignition of fusion targets. This is a reference book for those working on beam plasma physics, be it in the context of fundamental research or applications to fusion energy or novel ultra-bright laser sources. The book combines quite different areas of physics: beam target interaction, dense plasmas, hydrodynamic implosion and instabilities, radiative energy transfer as well as fusion reactions. Particular attention is given to simple and useful modelling, including dimensional analysis and similarity solutions. Both authors have worked in this field for more than 20 years. They want to address in particular those teaching this topic to students and all those interested in understanding the technical basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collision and subsequent interaction of counter-streaming plasmas occurs in several areas of laser-plasma research including double foil targets for x-ray lasers and the plasma blow-off inside ICF hohlraums. Because a single fluid model allows for only one value of the flow velocity at any one spatial location, interpenetration of the plamas is not allowed resulting in immediate stagnation with complete conversion of the ion-streaming kinetic energy to thermal energy. Multifluid models have been developed which employ multiple ion fluid species that interact through the self-consistent electrostatic field and collisional coupling. Because they are approximations to a kinetic situation, the form of these coupling coefficients is not unique, with various workers using differing approximations. More recently, Larroche has implemented a finite difference approach to the ion Fokker-Planck equation while Jones and co-workers have performed two-dimensional simulations of colliding plasmas using a particle-in-cell code with a new collisional model. Our kinetic modeling also makes use of particle in cell (PIC) techniques with Monte Carlo (MC) particle-particle collisions algorithm that is equivalent to the Fokker-Planck collision operator. We have made direct comparison of this MC-PIC model to multifluid simulations on both simple slowing-down and equilibration problems as well as problems characteristic of laser generated colliding plasmas. These comparisons have established the validity of the multifluid model as well as aided in the development of the kinetic capability for more challenging geometries.

Book excerpt: In the fall of 2010, the Office of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Secretary for Science asked for a National Research Council (NRC) committee to investigate the prospects for generating power using inertial confinement fusion (ICF) concepts, acknowledging that a key test of viability for this concept-ignition -could be demonstrated at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the relatively near term. The committee was asked to provide an unclassified report. However, DOE indicated that to fully assess this topic, the committee's deliberations would have to be informed by the results of some classified experiments and information, particularly in the area of ICF targets and nonproliferation. Thus, the Panel on the Assessment of Inertial Confinement Fusion Targets ("the panel") was assembled, composed of experts able to access the needed information. The panel was charged with advising the Committee on the Prospects for Inertial Confinement Fusion Energy Systems on these issues, both by internal discussion and by this unclassified report. A Panel on Fusion Target Physics ("the panel") will serve as a technical resource to the Committee on Inertial Confinement Energy Systems ("the Committee") and will prepare a report that describes the R&D challenges to providing suitable targets, on the basis of parameters established and provided to the Panel by the Committee. The Panel on Fusion Target Physics will prepare a report that will assess the current performance of fusion targets associated with various ICF concepts in order to understand: 1. The spectrum output; 2. The illumination geometry; 3. The high-gain geometry; and 4. The robustness of the target design. The panel addressed the potential impacts of the use and development of current concepts for Inertial Fusion Energy on the proliferation of nuclear weapons information and technology, as appropriate. The Panel examined technology options, but does not provide recommendations specific to any currently operating or proposed ICF facility.
