Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2009, an inspiring international conference was held at Bielefeld on the topic "Children and the Good Life: New Challenges for Research on Children." The focus was on how we can define and measure a "good life" for children growing up in the modern world. This tied in with discussions on how convincing universalistic theories are, what research on children can contribute, and how children themselves can be integrated into the research process and debates on the "good life." Discourses and the production of knowledge on the "good life" or "well-being" require a guiding idea or a theoretical frame. This frame can come from the feminist ethic of care or from the Human and Children's Rights Convention, from the idea of welfare, or from the Capability Approach.

But in many cases it would seem much simpler to avoid health problems. Why do we wait until the illnesses have developed? Young and expectant families are particularly interested in maintaining the health of their children and their whole family. Since prevention must begin long before the emergence of illness, there can be no better time to start than the beginning of life. This book presents a range of contributions that not only encourage theoretical reflection about the topics discussed but also provide practical suggestions.

Book excerpt: Is learning disability determined from birth? Psychoanalysis has always striven to reconstruct damaged human subjectivity. However, with a few exceptions, people with learning disabilities have long been excluded from this enterprise as a matter of course. It has been taken for granted that learning disability is a deficient state in which psychodynamics play but a minor role and where development is irrevocably determined by organic conditions. First published in German in 1980s and published here in English for the first time, this brave and provocative book was one of the first to attempt to understand learning disabilities in terms of psychoanalysis and socio-psychology. Controversially, the author does not distinguish between a primary organic handicap and a secondary psychological one; rather, she argues that it is developed from the very outset of the process of socialisation during the interaction of caregiver and infant, and therefore gives the analyst room to work on this maladapted socialisation. She illustrates the effectiveness of this theory when put into practice in a number of illuminating case studies. Still as influential and powerful as when it was first published, Nameless will be of interest to psychoanalysts and clinicians from across the mental health services who work with people with learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: Experiences of violence, sexual abuse, accidents, disasters or deaths of close relatives or friends, and other extreme situations can lead to trauma-related disorders. Since 2018, the World Health Organization has distinguished four such disorders in its classification list: "classic" and complex post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as prolonged grief disorder and adjustment disorder. These long-term effects are described in detail in the book. In recent years, a variety of interventions have been developed to effectively treat these disorders. This 5th edition has been largely reorganized due to the groundbreaking innovations in which the editor played a decisive role on an international level. Among the innovations are the chapters on: - Complex post-traumatic stress disorder - Childhood violence and its consequences - Low-threshold and innovative interventions - Methods of cognitive behavioral therapy - Psychodynamic approaches The handbook on psychological trauma-related disorders.

It focuses on interventions designed to maintain psychosocial health and prevent emotional and behavioral problems in children and youths around the globe. By combining a range of research perspectives, the book connects mindfulness to pro-social behavior, and to positive social and physical environments, in order to enhance resilience. In addition, it presents theoretical aspects and practical recommendations on how to promote mental health and healthy lifestyles in adolescents, such as school-based interventions. Gathering contributions by an international network of researchers and practitioners, the book offers not only state-of-the-art theoretical descriptions of key concepts and interventions, but also best practices for implementing them to strengthen resilience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book discusses current findings on regulatory disorders in infants and offers practical guidelines for diagnosis and intervention. Focusing on core infant and toddler concerns including crying, sleeping, feeding, clinginess, and aggression, it presents a developmental continuum from normal to disturbed behavior regulation and examines science-based strategies for halting this trajectory. Case examples and widely used tools illustrate diverse approaches to assessment and diagnosis, emphasizing nuances of parent-infant interactions and parents‘ reactions that may fail to answer, or may even exacerbate, the child’s distress. And chapters outline counseling and therapy options for infants and parents, so that persistent problems do not become entrenched in children’s future behavior or lead to long-term family dysfunction. Among the topics covered: Approaches to diagnosing regulatory disorders in infants. Feeding disorders in infants and young children. Developmentally appropriate vs. persistent defiant and aggressive behavior. Treatment approaches for regulatory disorders. Video and video feedback in counseling and therapy. Regulatory Disorders in Infants is an essential resource for clinicians and practitioners as well as researchers and graduate students in clinical child and school psychology, pediatrics, social work, psychiatry, and family studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume internationally well known experts discuss whether psychoanalysis - with its rich mix of clinical experiences and conceptualizations of early development and symptoms - has something unique to offer through deepening the understanding of children suffering from this and similar developmental disturbances. The contributors consider therapeutic strategies as well as possibilities of early prevention. Surprisingly, psychoanalysts have only during the past few years actively engaged in the on-going and very important controversial discussions on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There may be many reasons for the increasing interest in this topic over the past few years - for example the dialogue between psychoanalysis and contemporary neurobiology/brain research which opens a fascinating window on an old problem in European culture: the mind-body problem. This exchange also promises to enlarge the understanding of psychic problems probably connected with some neurobiologically-based pathologies, widely assumed to include ADHD.

Book excerpt: OPD-CA-2, the multiaxial diagnostic system for psychodynamically oriented psychiatrists and therapists, now for children and adolescents. Following the success of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis for Adults (OPD-2), this multiaxial diagnostic and classification system based on psychodynamic principles has now been adapted for children and adolescents by combining psychodynamic, developmental, and clinical psychiatric perspectives. The OPD-CA-2 is based on four axes that are aligned with the new dimensional approach in the DSM-5: I = interpersonal relations, II = conflict, III = structure, and IV = prerequisites for treatment. After an initial interview, the clinician (or researcher) can evaluate the patient's psychodynamics according to these axes to get a comprehensive psychodynamic view of the patient. Easy-to-use checklists and evaluation forms are provided. The set of tools and procedures the OPD-CA-2 manual provides have been widely used for assessing indications for therapy, treatment planning, and measuring change, as well as providing information for parental work.

Book excerpt: The blush is a ubiquitous yet little understood phenomenon which can be triggered by a number of self-conscious emotions such as shame, embarrassment, shyness, pride and guilt. The field of psychology has seen a recent surge in the research of such emotions, yet blushing remains a relatively neglected area. This unique volume brings together leading researchers from a variety of disciplines to review emerging research on the blush, discussing in depth issues that have arisen and stimulating new theorizing to indicate future directions for research. Topics covered include: the psychophysiology of the blush; developmental aspects; measurement issues; its evolutionary significance and the role of similar colour signals in the social life of other species; its relation to embarrassment, shame and social anxiety; and the rationale for, and clinical trials of, interventions to help people suffering from blushing phobia.
