Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Activities In each monthly meeting of the Chicago Kindergarten Club some few years ago, ten or a dozen members, who were dealing with some practical aspect of the kindergarten work, gave to the club the help of their ex periences, methods, and resources. None of us felt that we could afford to miss a single one of those meetings. No one could come away from them without having added treasure to her store. All gave gladly and all received thankfully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in Terms of Children's Activities: For the Kindergarten and Primary Grades This course of study is intended to stimulate the thought and broaden the practice of the teachers of little children in the Seattle schools. It will assist greatly those teachers who address themselves studiously to the task of appreciating the needs of developing children and of accommodating their treatment to those needs. Educational needs change with the hours and with moods. There are not many lessons that can be harnessed to a routine in the earlier stages of teaching, if enrichment is to result. Teachers are requested to try out the suggestions in this manual only according to their ability to make use of the suggestions fortunately for the children. Whenever the way outlined here does not appear to suit the teacher's individual power, her own best way should be used. It is possible that she has been surfeited with new ideas and facts, and many salient points in rela tion to child-training, and in relation to the agencies at her command, have strayed from her memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Teaching at Home As this little manual is meant to deal only with the methods of the instruction of children, not with their education as a whole, religion and religious doctrine are beyond its scope. Their omission, therefore, must not be taken to imply that to the mind of the writers they are unimportant. On the contrary, they are to them the very foundation of all education and all instruction, the beginning and the end of all that makes the worth of human life. And they would urge that in giving religious in struction, at least as much pains should be taken to study and apply the best methods as are taken in other subjects. If the story of Cinderella as given in Chapter I is worth bestowing care on, not less but much more care is wor1b giving to (e. G) 'any Old or New Testament story that is to be told. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kindergarten Children's Hour, Vol. 2 of 5 Let song and laughter enter into every occupation, whether it be a task or a game. Count it a privilege to live with the children, to play with them, and to see things from their point of view. Make all kinds of work seem to be play, because of the enjoyment that enters into it. This book will have accomplished its purpose if, through its suggestions, it enables you to fill the waking hours of your children with beneficial occupations, for to a child the world is a big place and his ideas are be wildered when he is left entirely to himself. The direction you will thus be enabled to give to the children's play will in a large measure determine the ideals that are to influence their later lives, at the same time helping them to meet their problems and to perform their tasks with confidence and self-reliance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friedrich Froebel's Pedagogics of the Kindergarten: Or, His Ideas Concerning the Play and Playthings of the Child The work here offered to the public is a translation of fifteen of the essays of Froebel collected by Wichard Lange into a volume entitled Die Padagogik des Kindergartens, Gedanken Friedrich Froebel's uber das Spiel und die Spielgegenstande des Kindes, Berlin, 1861. The chief value of the present volume is to be found in the thoroughgoing discussion of the first five gifts. Froebel found an educational value in every phase of the child's play, and in every object that engages its attention. His keen scent discovered in the roundness of the ball, in the facility with which it may be moved on a plane surface, an educative effect on the dawning intellect of the child. It is a symbol of a unity that perpetually asserts itself in whatever variety - i. e., in whatever change of place, extension, or movement - happens to it. "The sphere represents to the child every isolated simple unity - the child gets from it a hint of manifoldness as still abiding in unity" (p. 105). Whether the ball or sphere be large or small, every segment of the surface is like every other, and undistinguishable from the others by shape - "the manifoldness abides in unity." That this is akin to the child's consciousness of self is obvious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Let him represent the flying Of birds and he enters partially into the life of birds. Let him imitate the rapid motion of fishes in the water and his sympathy with fishes is quickened. Let him reproduce the activities of farmer, miller and baker, and his eyes open to the meaning of their work. In one word let him reflect in his play the varied aspects of life and his thought will begin to grapple with their significance.
