Book Synopsis Earthquake Hazard In Lebanon by : Amr Salah Eldin Elnashai
Download or read book Earthquake Hazard In Lebanon written by Amr Salah Eldin Elnashai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-07-26 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive treatment of earthquake hazards in Lebanon and its vicinity. A thorough review of the tectonics of the region is given alongside a re-assessment of the historical and instrumental earthquake records. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is undertaken and hazard maps are presented in terms of peak ground parameters as well as spectral ordinates (acceleration and displacement). Owing to their significance to the economy of Lebanon, the three cities of Beirut, Sidon and Tripoli are subjected to site-specific earthquake hazard assessment. The maps provided are the best available estimates of seismic hazards in Lebanon and are recommended for use in risk assessment. Also, the basis and framework for similar studies in the Levant are given. The rigorous and pragmatic approach adopted by the authors renders the book accessible to design engineers and researchers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selection of 11 papers from a July 1996 symposium in Toronto for scientists, engineers, and public safety professionals charged with preparation and mitigation efforts for earthquakes or such weather disasters as hurricanes and floods. They discuss such aspects as boundaries of self-structure domains in the complex theory of natural disasters, a test of the cyclicity of earthquakes, problems for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, estimating response spectra in the severely damaged area during the 1995 Hyogo-Ken Nambu (Japan) earthquake, Arias intensity assessment of liquefaction test sites on the east-side of San Francisco Bay affected by the Loma Prieta (California) earthquake of 17 October 1989, and the behavior of an artificial island during the Great Hanshin earthquake in Japan. A summary concludes the volume. No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This book was released on 2000-08-31 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected and rigorously scrutinized presentations made at the Second International Conference on Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction held in Yerevan, Armenia, on 14-21 September 1998. The 46 contributions from authors from over 20 countries provide an overview of the achievements and experiences of different countries in disaster reduction since 1988. These contributions are presented in the volume in three parts, namely Disaster Reduction, Earthquake Hazards, and Earthquake Engineering. This book will help to shape the direction that international disaster prevention will take by identifying crucial program functions and essential institutional responsibilities in the field of disaster reduction after the IDNDR. Audience: This volume contains valuable information for seismologists, geophysicists, earth scientists, engineers, architects, and psychologists interested in earthquake hazard and seismic risk research. It is also useful for authorities responsible for public safety and natural hazards mitigation plans, and for insurance companies.

Book Synopsis Issues in Urban Earthquake Risk by : B.E. Tucker
Download or read book Issues in Urban Earthquake Risk written by B.E. Tucker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-05-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban seismic risk is growing worldwide and is, increasingly, a problem of developing countries. In 1950, one in four of the people living in the world's fifty largest cities was earthquake-threatened, while in the year 2000, about one in two will be. Further, ofthose people living in earthquake-threatened cities in 1950, about two in three were located in developing countries, while in the year 2000, about nine in ten will be. Unless urban seismic safety is improved, particularly in developing countries, future earthquakes will have ever more disastrous social and economic consequences. In July 1992, an international meeting was organized with the purpose of examining one means ofimproving worldwide urban safety. Entitled "Uses ofEarthquake Damage Scenarios for Cities of the 21st Century," this meeting was held in conjunction with the Tenth World Conference ofEarthquake Engineering, in Madrid, Spain. An earthquake damage scenario (EDS) is adescription of the consequences to an urban area of a large, but expectable earthquake on the critical facilities of that area. In Californian and Japanese cities, EDSes have been used for several decades, mainly for the needs of emergency response officials. The Madrid meeting examined uses of this technique for other purposes and in other, less developed countries. As a result of this meeting, it appeared that EDSes bad significant potential to improve urban seismic safety worldwide.
