Download or read book Transients written by John K.B. Ford and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on transient killer whales. Enigmatic and elusive, these mammal-hunting whales are difficult animals to study. They travel in small groups, often moving unpredictably, which makes them less conspicuous than the larger resident pods. For these and other reasons, our understanding of the life history and ecology of transient killer whales has lagged behind that of residents. Transients contains the latest information on the natural history of transient killer whales, including their feeding habits, social lives, and distribution patterns. The catalogue section contains photographs of and notes on over 200 individual whales. Numerous sidebars contain interesting observations on encounters with transients as well as information on how and where to best watch them.

Book Synopsis Into Great Silence by : Eva Saulitis
Download or read book Into Great Silence written by Eva Saulitis and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science entwines with matters of the human heart as a whale researcher chronicles the lives of an endangered family of orcas Ever since Eva Saulitis began her whale research in Alaska in the 1980s, she has been drawn deeply into the lives of a single extended family of endangered orcas struggling to survive in Prince William Sound. Over the course of a decades-long career spent observing and studying these whales, and eventually coming to know them as individuals, she has, sadly, witnessed the devastation wrought by the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989—after which not a single calf has been born to the group. With the intellectual rigor of a scientist and the heart of a poet, Saulitis gives voice to these vital yet vanishing survivors and the place they are so loyal to. Both an elegy for one orca family and a celebration of the entire species, Into Great Silence is a moving portrait of the interconnectedness of humans with animals and place—and of the responsibility we have to protect them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of a Reno couple from Prince William Sound, Alaska, along with a half eaten dog, apparently by killer whales, raises suspicion that a certain orca pack, called the A-T pack, led by a particularly sharp and aggressive female, the queen, may be responsible. An exploration geologist and his wife, Alaska residents and both interested in orcas, carry out investigations in the A-T pack's home waters to learn more about their behavior and habits. They are joined by a marine biologist orca specialist from southern California. A number of people are determined to communicate with the orcas, including a psychologist from Canada, a rock band from Vancouver, BC. and music for the orcas via underwater speakers. Some kids from Anchorage attempt to communicate with the whales with near-fatal consequences. Accompany the intelligent orcas as they hunt, kill and eat various types of fish and animals. They also have fun. The three investigators decide to test the interest of the orcas, under federal and state supervision, in a totally strange food to help determine if they might kill and eat humans. Small pigs, a human food, were decided upon as the best choice for testing orca reaction to strange food animals. The test is successful and part of the A-T pack is orca led but not for long.
