Book excerpt: In the past decade, obesity has emerged as a major public health concern in the United States and abroad. At the federal, state, and local level, policy makers have begun drafting a range of policies to fight a war against fat, including body-mass index (BMI) report cards, “snack taxes,” and laws to control how fast food companies market to children. As an epidemic, obesity threatens to weaken the health, economy, and might of the most powerful nation in the world. In Killer Fat, Natalie Boero examines how and why obesity emerged as a major public health concern and national obsession in recent years. Using primary sources and in-depth interviews, Boero enters the world of bariatric surgeries, Weight Watchers, and Overeaters Anonymous to show how common expectations of what bodies are supposed to look like help to determine what sorts of interventions and policies are considered urgent in containing this new kind of disease. Boero argues that obesity, like the traditional epidemics of biological contagion and mass death, now incites panic, a doomsday scenario that must be confronted in a struggle for social stability. The “war” on obesity, she concludes, is a form of social control. Killer Fat ultimately offers an alternate framing of the nation’s obesity problem based on the insights of the “Health at Every Size” movement.

Book excerpt: The landmark New York Times best seller that reveals how the explosion of sugar in our diets has created an obesity epidemic, and what we can do to save ourselves. Robert Lustig is at the forefront of war against sugar — showing us that it's toxic, it's addictive, and it's everywhere because the food companies want it to be. His 90-minute YouTube video "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" has been viewed more than 7 million times. Now, in this landmark book, he documents the science and the politics that have led to personal misery and public crisis — the pandemic of obesity and chronic disease--over the last thirty years. In the late 1970s, when the U.S. government declared that we needed to get the fat out of our diets, the food industry responded by pumping in more sugar to make food more palatable (and more salable), and by removing the fiber to make food last longer on the shelf. The result has been a perfect storm for our health, disastrously altering our biochemistry to make us think we're starving, drive our eating habits out of our control, and turn us into couch potatoes. If we cannot control how we eat, it's because of the catastrophic excess of sugar in our diet--the resulting hormonal imbalances have rewired our brains! To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents strategies we can each use to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress, as well as societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. With scientific rigor and even a little humor, Fat Chance categorically proves that "a calorie is not a calorie," and takes that knowledge to its logical conclusion--an overhaul of the global food system.

Book excerpt: Fat Kids: Truth and Consequences is an informational vault of deeply personal tales and essential information, focusing on the lives, questions, and concerns of parents and children living in a childhood obesity crisis. Unlike most books about weight, however, Fat Kids is not a dieting or weight loss how-to; it instead explores the true human experiences and often untold science outside the current political positioning on children and weight. This book powerfully combines interviews, relevant research, social anecdotes, personal author accounts, and the reality of children struggling with weight, to create a narrative that is profoundly poignant, accessible, and essential for understanding our current war on fat. Fat Kids is a truly unique work; all other books focusing on children and weight are solely focused only on diet and weight loss. This book, with its empathetic point of view, raw emotion, and solid information, is a necessary voice in the literary scene.

Comprising over 20 chapters from a range of diverse and international contributors, the Reader is structured around the following key themes: theorizing gender and fat; narrating gender and fat; historicizing gender and fat; institutions and public policy; health and medicine; popular culture and media; and resistance. It is an intersectional collection, highlighting the ways that "gender" and "fat" always exist in connection with multiple other structures, forms of oppression, and identities, including race, ethnicity, sexualities, age, nationalities, disabilities, religion, and class. The Contemporary Reader of Gender and Fat Studies is essential reading for scholars and advanced students in Gender Studies, Sexuality Studies, Sociology, Body Studies, Cultural Studies, Psychology, and Health. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t eat rice Eat only salads Banana is fattening Have only olive oil Walk for 90 mins Skip your dinner Some do get results in terms of weight loss by following such practices, but ask yourself: Is it sustainable? Can you be on a diet for ages? No, right! This book is conceptualised to give the following message: You don’t need a magical diet to get fit. Instead, you need to build a good lifestyle. This message is elucidated with real-life examples and practical tips. I am not the first and surely not the last to write about this topic. Some amazing authors have written about it. So what is different about my book? Concepts do not change much; I have correlated these concepts with real-life examples I came across, working with different people. Throughout the book, there are tips towards this end, those that have been tried and tested by many, including me, my family, and the people I have worked with, where I have seen fantastic and sustainable results. While the title of this book is Weight Loss: Tathastu, this is not just about losing weight, but taking the right steps for living a healthy life. And when you do that, weight loss has to happen (Tathastu).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The body is a rich object for aesthetic inquiry. We aesthetically assess both our own bodies and those of others, and our felt bodily experiences—as we eat, have sex, and engage in other everyday activities—have aesthetic qualities. The body, whether depicted or actively performing, features centrally in aesthetic experiences of visual art, theatre, dance and sports. Body aesthetics can be a source of delight for both the subject and the object of the gaze. But aesthetic consideration of bodies also raises acute ethical questions: the body is deeply intertwined with one's identity and sense of self, and aesthetic assessment of bodies can perpetuate oppression based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, size, and disability. Artistic and media representations shape how we see and engage with bodies, with consequences both personal and political. This volume contains sixteen original essays by contributors in philosophy, sociology, dance, disability theory, critical race studies, feminist theory, medicine, and law. Contributors take on bodily beauty, sexual attractiveness, the role of images in power relations, the distinct aesthetics of disabled bodies, the construction of national identity, the creation of compassion through bodily presence, the role of bodily style in moral comportment, and the somatic aesthetics of racialized police violence.

New York Times best-selling author Jordan Rubin certainly doesn’t think so. His 16-week health plan isn’t about losing ten pounds to look like a picture in a magazine. It’s about finding the perfect weight for you. This may not be what you weigh right now. It may not be what you best friend weighs, or what your mother weighs. But somewhere inside you, there is a perfectly thin you just waiting to be revealed. Based on a landmark study conducted by Rubin in “one of the unhealthiest cities in America,” Re-Size America has been created as a program to help you achieve your perfect weight. With solid medical advice from Bernard Bulwer, MD, an advanced clinical fellow at one of the premier teaching hospitals at Harvard Medical School, this book contains the blueprint for re-sizing your life!

Because when he's not on TV, he works in the E.R. at Vanderbilt Medical Center. And his years of training and experience have told him that the one of the very first vital signs to check—one of the most important determining factors in whether a patient will recover from illness and injury, or face a future of disease, pain, and disability—is how much belly fat they're carrying. In fact, visceral fat—the kind that clings to your waistline and infiltrates your internal organs—is not only unsightly, it also sets you up for a host of health woes, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. So fighting belly fat is the same thing as fighting for your life! But now, Dr. Travis, America's top urgent-care doctor, has written the ultimate prescription for curing dangerous belly fat. His revolutionary PICK 3 TO LEAN plan lets you customize your diet and lifestyle to start melting away belly fat, without giving up your favorite foods, without spending hours in the gym, without really sacrificing anything—except belly fat! If you love snacking, if you love desserts, if you love burgers and steaks, if you love big, hearty breakfasts, there's a plan in here for you. With tiny tweaks to the foods you already love and enjoy, you'll begin to see the pounds disappear in just days! Plus, Dr. Travis explains the magic of N.E.A.T.: non-exercise activity thermogenesis, a fancy way of saying "burn more calories without exercising!" You pick the lifestyle you're most comfortable with. You decide which foods you want to eat. You choose what fun activities you want to enjoy. With The Lean Belly Prescription, you will have a plan custom-designed by you—with the help of Dr. Travis—that's scientifically proven to strip away up to 15 pounds in just 4 weeks. With The Lean Belly Prescription, you'll find yourself eating more the foods you love, spending more time doing the things you love, and having more fun with the people you love. Dr. Travis will teach you how to do that because The Lean Belly Prescription is a whole-life plan, taking in variables other diets don't consider, and offering weight-loss opportunities you didn't know you had. The result: a prescription plan you'll love, and stay on for the rest of your life because of how it makes you feel.
