Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology: Zoology Division, Volume 34:The Cell and Environmental Temperature documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Cytoecology held in Leningrad, U.S.S.R., from May 31 to June 5, 1965. This compilation focuses on the role of cellular reactions in the adaptation of multicellular organisms to environmental temperatures. The topics include the biochemical and physiological aspects of plant frost-resistance; mechanisms of resistance of poikilothermic animals to subfreezing temperatures; and changes in carbohydrate content of plants under heat-hardening. The analysis of seasonal changes in thermostability of frog muscles; effect of temperature on respiration and oxidative phosphorylation of pea seedlings; and metabolic and central nervous acclimation of fish to cold are also covered. This publication is intended for biologists concerned with the cytology, physiology, and ecology of plants and animals.
Book Synopsis Internal Waves in the Sea by : Owen S. Lee
Download or read book Internal Waves in the Sea written by Owen S. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal waves exist in the ocean as a rule rather than an exception. Energy is transported by them in channels that are similar to sound channels. Their effect on naval exercises and equipment, particularly functions involving the use of underwater sound, can be expected to be more pronounced in these channels. Although theory and observation are still not adequate for a full understanding of the phenomenon, western literature prior to June 1963 contains more than 300 publications dealing with internal waves in the atmosphere, lakes, and seas. These publications are listed in the comprehensive bibliography which is part of this report. (Author).

Book Synopsis State and Evolution of the Baltic Sea, 1952-2005 by : Rainer Feistel
Download or read book State and Evolution of the Baltic Sea, 1952-2005 written by Rainer Feistel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a fifty-year study conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, this book brings together a comprehensive summary of their observations and findings. Written by well-known experts, this revealing book concentrates on long-term changes in the Baltic Sea?which can be extrapolated to shed light on the environmental problems of other shelf seas, brackish seas, and large estuaries?thereby contributing to our understanding of water exchange processes, eutrophication, and climatic impacts at the forefront of international concern.

Book Synopsis Cyclic Phenomena in Marine Plants and Animals by : E. Naylor
Download or read book Cyclic Phenomena in Marine Plants and Animals written by E. Naylor and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclic Phenomena in Marine Plants and Animals covers the proceedings of the 13th European Marine Biology Symposium. The title presents papers that tackle the cyclical biological processes in population ecology, developmental biology, metabolism, and the behavior of marine organisms. The text first covers topics about the population cycles of flora and fauna. Next, the selection details the rhythmic aspects of reproduction and growth, and then proceeds to discussing the cyclical aspects of production and metabolism. The text also deals with the rhythmic behavior and its control by environmental and physiological factors. The book will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of marine biology and ecology.

Book Synopsis Sensitivity to Change by : Emin Özsoy
Download or read book Sensitivity to Change written by Emin Özsoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a degradation of the environmental quality in semi-enclosed seas, which are particularly sensitive to population pressures due to their naturally low flushing rates related to their geometry. The North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Black Sea are amongst the most seriously threatened seas in the Euro-Asian region. Each semi-enclosed sea has a distinct pattern of circulation, transport, mixing, associated with the particular geometry, topography, boundary processes, interior stratification, atmospheric forcing, ice fonnation, straits / sill controls, and the specific inputs of freshwater, nutrients and pollutants. The workshop investigated the distinctive physical and ecological characteristics of the three seas in a comparative manner, in order to identify the types of driving forces and dynamic controls operating on productivity, nutrient cycling, physical transport and mixing mechanisms. A comparative study of these controlling mechanisms would allow us to better understand ecosystem sensitivity in these different environments. The workshop presentations highlighted the complexity of the semi-enclosed seas related to the interaction amongst the physical, chemical and biological fields, and differences in time and space scales in each of the systems. Further, a strong climate signal exists in these systems, manifest in the interannual, interdecadal and longer term variability. Part of the variability appears connected with background climatic variability.

Book Synopsis A Functional Biology of Scyphozoa by : M.N. Arai
Download or read book A Functional Biology of Scyphozoa written by M.N. Arai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scyphozoa have attracted the attention of many types of people. Naturalists watch their graceful locomotion. Fishermen may dread the swarms which can prevent fishing or eat larval fish. Bathers retreat from the water if they are stung. People from some Asiatic countries eat the medusae. Comparative physiologists examine them as possibly simple models for the functioning of various systems. This book integrates data from those and other investigations into a functional biology of scyphozoa. It will emphasize the wide range of adaptive responses possible in these morphologically relatively simple animals. The book will concentrate on the research of the last 35 years, partly because there has been a rapid expansion of knowledge during that period, and partly because much of the previous work was summarized by books published between 1961 and 1970. Bibliographies of papers on scyphozoa were included in Mayer (1910) and Kramp (1961). Taxonomic diagnoses are also included in those monographs, as well as in a monograph on the scyphomedusae of the USSR published by Naumov (Naumov, 1961). Most impor tantly, a genenttion of scyphozoan workers has used as its 'bible' the monograph by F.S.Russell (1970) The Medusae of the British Isles. In spite of its restrictive title, his book reviews most of the information on the biology of scyphozoa up to that date.
