Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kidnapped by Cannibals There was not much of the ocean to be seen from the door of the cottage where the farmer's wife stood, for green hills, wooded on the top with weird-looking pine trees, rose up on two sides, forming a kind of glen, every foot of which was under cultivation, and affording just a triangular glimpse of blue water, that went broadening upwards, with here and there a brown boat on its surface, till sea kissed sky, and you could not have told where the one began or the other ended. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Cannibal Curse It was such a little cage, with wooden sides and thick black bars that let scarcely one ray of sunlight into the musty interior. For a moment, coming in from the brightness outside, I was blinded and could see nothing, only my nostrils twitched at a familiar smell. Then my eyes grew accustomed to the gloom and I peered through the bars of the cage. Inside, huddled forlornly together, their eyes blinking in wistful appeal, were two chimpanzees. So these were the 'Wild Beasts of the Jungle' I had in my curiosity paid a centime to see, beasts whose brothers only a few months before had been my companions in their native haunts where cages and civilization were unknown, where life was lived as Nature had ordained it should be, free as the air, without clothes or laws or restrictions. How miserable these little captives looked, shut in their narrow cage, doomed to be stared at and laughed over by unsympathetic spectators for the rest of their lives! How they must miss their forest life! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camping Among Cannibals By the skipper I was introduced to the agent, and by him to a dozen or so of other nautical gentlemen, one of whom, a young man, was, I learned, to aecom pany us, being somehow interested in a part of the cargo. Him I have found a most pleasant companion. Two bare little rooms formed the agent's offices, upon whose wooden walls hung great charts represent ing very large spaces of water dotted here and there with minute specks, which, on their part, stood for the Islands. But the branches of beautiful coral and strange brightly-coloured shells on the safe and mantelpiece, and the richly-carved canoe-paddle pushed away in a corner behind a dusty file of old bills, were most suggestive of the interesting places to which they traded. Here I took my berth, and found myself, to my surprise, to be a person of some importance as the passenger, for I am the only one; and here I returned after making some purchases in the town of necessaries for the voyage, as nothing was provided in the way of cabin furniture but a mattress, of which, indeed, they spoke with some complacency, but which, after I had endured for two nights its intolerable smell and dirt, I besought the skipper to have thrust below. Download or read book My Adventures Among South Sea Cannibals written by Douglas Rannie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Adventures Among South Sea Cannibals: An Account of the Experiences and Adventures of a Government Official Among the Natives of Oceania The British settlers and islanders of the Western Pacific are to-day deeply grateful to Sir Samuel Griffith, at that time Premier of the Queensland Government, and his Cabinet for their wise, humane, and beneficial legislation, for it is sadly too true that the outrages committed by ships' crews led to reprisals by the natives on missionaries, settlers, or the first white man they came across. It is commonly stated among traders and others that it was thus Bishop Patteson lost his life. The Bishop, after landing, would be surrounded by a crowd of natives; he would conduct a short and simple service, after which he would try and gain their goodwill, and thus from small beginnings would try and forward his great work. This usual procedure being known to many who sailed those seas, was taken advantage of by an unmitigated scoundrel, the captain of a Labour vessel, who went ashore at Santa Cruz, an island lying between the New Hebrides and the Solomon Islands, got up in a white calico robe, to personate the Bishop. After some blasphemous buffoonery he invited a large number of the islanders on board, and they in all innocence followed him. They were shown down into the hold, where some of the crew were making a pretence of conducting Church service. The islanders unsuspecting the trap, were lured below. The hatches were promptly put on, and battened down, and the ship sailed away with her victims. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kidnapped and the Ransomed: Being the Personal Recollections of Peter Still and His Wife "Vina," After Forty Years of Slavery It was thought, by most of those who had heard the histories of Peter Still and Seth Concklin, that such histories ought not to remain unwritten or unpublished. It was believed that good narratives of both of these remarkable men, would give to the people Of the Northern States some new illustrations of the horrors of that peculiar institution, which has well-nigh subjugated to itself our entire Republic.
