Book excerpt: KIDNAPPED BY A ROGUE (THE DOUGLAS LEGACY Book 3) THE DOUGLAS LEGACY The Douglas sisters, beauties all, are used as pawns in their family’s bitter struggle to control the Scottish Crown. But when a Douglas lass is in danger, she’ll find she’s been left to face it alone. KIDNAPPED BY A ROGUE After her brother’s dramatic fall from power and banishment for treason, Lady Margaret’s husband threw her out to save himself. Now her ambitious brother is back in Scotland with the support of Henry VIII—and a plan to again marry off his beautiful, compliant sister to forge an alliance. But Margaret refuses to ever wed again, and she’s desperate to escape. Thanks to his roguish charm and skill with a sword, Finn Sinclair Gordon has managed to survive the treacherous waters between his parents' rival clans—until now. To prove his loyalty, Finn must accept the unsavory task of taking the Douglas chieftain’s sister hostage. Oddly, the lass doesn’t offer much resistance. Though Margaret knows better than to trust the devilishly handsome Highland warrior who unwittingly provides her escape, she struggles to fight the unexpected passion that ignites between them. Finn, who likes women for a laugh and a night of pleasure, is blindsided by his fierce desire for this steady lass with a kind heart. They’ll risk their lives to save each other and prevent a bloody clan war—but will they risk their wounded hearts for love?

Book excerpt: On July 8, 2014, Israel launched air strikes on Hamas-controlled Gaza, followed by a ground invasion. The ensuing fifty-one days of war left more than 2,200 people dead, the vast majority of whom were Palestinian civilians, including over 500 children. During the assault, at least 10,000 homes were destroyed and, according to the United Nations, nearly 300,000 Palestinians were displaced. Max Blumenthal was in Gaza and throughout Israel-Palestine during what he argues was an entirely avoidable catastrophe. In this explosive work of intimate reportage, Blumenthal reveals the harrowing conditions and cynical deceptions that led to the ruinous war -- and tells the human stories. Blumenthal brings the battles in Gaza to life, detailing the ferocious clashes that took place when Israel's military invaded the besieged strip. He radically shifts the discussion around a number of highly contentious issues: the use of civilians as human shields by Israeli forces, the arbitrary targeting of Palestinian civilians, and the radicalization of Israeli public officials and top military personnel. Amid the rubble of Gaza's border regions, Blumenthal recorded the testimonies from scores of residents, documenting potential war crimes committed by the Israeli armed forces while carefully examining the military doctrine that led to them. More than a chronicle of war and devastation, The 51 Day War is an urgent warning that the aftermath of the conflict has made another military assault on Gaza almost inevitable. And while the people of Gaza will once again prove their resilience, the world can no longer just stand aside and watch.

Charley Castillo comes out of retirement to direct a new Presidential Agent, one Captain P. K. Pick McCoy, USMC. Charley may be too old to kick down doors and take names, but Killer McCoy is just the man to get the job done. Together they will track the kidnapped secretary from Cairo to sub-Saharan Africa. The only problem is that one man can't hope to win against an army of terrorists. Good thing there are two of them. -- adapted from jacket.

Book excerpt: Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson Kidnapped is one of the few classics assigned in elementary school that I actually read in elementary school and one of the few books I had to read for school that I really liked. I think it's a great book for convincing kids that classics can be readable and fun, although it's an adventure novel for kids and as an adult, I found it thin in places. David Balfour had a quiet upbringing in the Scottish Lowlands, but his parents died and it's time to go out into the world in search of fortune. The local minister put him on his way, pointing to a nearby town where he has relatives. From there, he discovers that he is the rightful heir to a family fortune, is betrayed by his uncle, kidnapped on a sea voyage, meets and pairs with a rogue, makes his way through the wild Scottish Highlands. And in short, it follows the standard coming-of-age adventure story way. It's fun to see how much Kidnapped matches the standard blockbuster fantasy plot without being fantasy at all. This type of adventure story is often written as fantasy these days, with the otherness of magic and medieval cultures replacing the otherness of historic Scotland and its wild nature, and yet little of the plot changes without the element. of fantasy. Without the growing discovery of mythological power or structure, there is less to do, but the complexities of Scottish politics fill in and feel deeper than most fantasy politics. Bizarre locations, sexy rogues, high seas adventures, and a bit of Scottish political intrigue make this an adventure and provide the obvious appeal, but the strength of Stevenson's writing lies in the interactions of the characters. Not so much the characters themselves: David is a solid man, young and a bit reckless and full of self-confidence. Alan is a classic rogue, with a certain fighting skill, a gift for the word, and a gambling problem. The other characters also tend to stick to the types of actions, and none of them change much in the course of the adventure. But they all feel deep and nuanced because Stevenson's touch with dialogue and interaction is exceptional. David expresses an attitude of superiority and adventure in the first-person narrative that matches his age and is mixed with a direct attitude of his upbringing that occasionally takes him by surprise. Alan is not just a rogue with a heart of gold; He's also unpleasant to David when he's in that mood. David doesn't really know how to deal with his conflicting political beliefs. When they finally have a serious fight, it is one of the most honest fights I have seen in a book of this type; They fight like real resentful adults, true to character, rather than smug children or distraught teens. There are some flaws. I found the beginning and end of the book by far the strongest, and I got quite tired of the long walk through the Scottish Highlands, marked by only a few major events. The final resolution of David's inheritance is a wonderful piece, but a touch too easy (although Stevenson does a great job of making the victory a little less complete for practical reasons). And this is still an adventure novel for children, an exciting game, and not much more than that. But it is a great example of the genre. .

He has me in his home, his bed, and I’m desperately in love with him despite my best efforts and better judgment. Did I mention I’m pregnant? As our child grows inside me, the one I’m pledged to give to him, I still have no idea what will happen after the birth. Though Rogue is attentive in every way a woman could wish for, bringing me delirious pleasure and gifts beyond price, he still won’t—or can’t—tell me what game he’s playing. Or what the viciously sadistic Queen Titania has to do with our many bargains. I’m most afraid that, if he betrays us, I’ll never be able to forgive him. Even though I can’t stop loving him. As war threatens everything we’ve built, as my body swells with the enchanted pregnancy, I become more certain with every day that the true enemy lurks within our castle walls. And that the man I’ve vowed eternal commitment to, may be the last person I can trust…

Book excerpt: One of America’s most respected economists presents a quirky, incisive romp through everyday life that reveals how you can turn economic reasoning to your advantage—often when you least expect it to be relevant. Like no other economist, Tyler Cowen shows how economic notions—such as incentives, signals, and markets—apply far more widely than merely to the decisions of social planners, governments, and big business. What does economic theory say about ordering from a menu? Or attracting the right mate? Or controlling people who talk too much in meetings? Or dealing with your dentist? With a wryly amusing voice, in chapters such as “How to Control the World, The Basics” and “How to Control the World, Knowing When to Stop” Cowen reveals the hidden economic patterns behind everyday situations so you can get more of what you really want. Readers will also gain less selfish insights into how to be a good partner, neighbor and even citizen of the world. For instance, what is the best way to give to charity? The chapter title “How to Save the World—More Christmas Presents Won’t Help” makes a point that is every bit as personal as it is global. Incentives are at the core of an economic approach to the world, but they don’t just come in cash. In fact, money can be a disincentive. Cowen shows why, for example, it doesn’t work to pay your kids to do the dishes. Other kinds of incentives—like making sure family members know they will be admired if they respect you—can work. Another non-monetary incentive? Try having everyone stand up in your next meeting if you don’t want anyone to drone on. Deeply felt incentives like pride in one’s work or a passing smile from a loved one, can be the most powerful of all, even while they operate alongside more mundane rewards such as money and free food. Discover Your Inner Economist is an introduction to the science of economics that shows it to be built on notions that are already within all of us. While the implications of those ideas lead to Cowen’s often counterintuitive advice, their wisdom is presented in ordinary examples taken from home life, work life, and even vacation life… How do you get a good guide in a Moroccan bazaar?
