Book Synopsis 'Yogini' in South Asia by : István Keul
Download or read book 'Yogini' in South Asia written by István Keul and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In different stages in the history of South Asian religions, the term yoginī has been used in various contexts to designate various things: a female adept of yoga, a female tantric practitioner, a sorceress, a woman dedicated to a deity, or a certain category of female deities. This book brings together recent interdisciplinary perspectives on the medieval South Asian cults of the Yoginis, such as textual-philological, historical, art historical, indological, anthropological, ritual and terminological. The book discusses the medieval yoginī cult, as illustrated in early Śaiva tantric texts, and their representations in South Asian temple iconography. It looks at the roles and hypostases of yoginīs in contemporary religious traditions, as well as the transformations of yoginī-related ritual practices. In addition, this book systematizes the multiple meanings, and proposes definitions of the concept and models for integrating the semantic fields of ‘yoginī.’ Highlighting the importance of research from complementary disciplines for the exploration of complex themes in South Asian studies, this book is of interest to scholars of South Asian Studies and Religious Studies.

Book Synopsis Cambodian Folk Stories from the Gatiloke by : Muriel Paskin Carrison
Download or read book Cambodian Folk Stories from the Gatiloke written by Muriel Paskin Carrison and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and adults of Cambodian descent or anyone interested in Cambodian culture will enjoy this collection of Cambodian Folk and Fairy Tales. Cambodian Folk Stories from the Gatiloke, a collection of ancient Cambodian folk stories, have their origin in the gentle teachings of Buddhist monks. The settings are usually towns, villages, farms, or forests where people live and work-people with ordinary strengths and weaknesses, people who face life's usual problems as they go about their daily business. There are traditional stories of peasants whose quick wit saves them from thieves and scoundrels, and tales of clever women who foil traps set for them by greedy nobles. Humorous stories ridicule unjust rulers and tell of the absurd predicaments of people. Animal fables teach lessons in justice, wisdom, and compassion. Some of the stories in this collection have been passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation for thousands of years; others are more modern Cambodian classics. All portray the heart and soul of the Cambodian people.

Book Synopsis The Architecture of Empire by : Gauvin Alexander Bailey
Download or read book The Architecture of Empire written by Gauvin Alexander Bailey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most monumental buildings of France’s global empire – such as the famous Saigon and Hanoi Opera Houses – were built in South and Southeast Asia. Much of this architecture, and the history of who built it and how, has been overlooked. The Architecture of Empire considers the large-scale public architecture associated with French imperialism in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century India, Siam, and Vietnam, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century Indochina, the largest colony France ever administered in Asia. Offering a sweeping panorama of the buildings of France’s colonial project, this is the first study to encompass the architecture of both the ancien régime and modern empires, from the founding of the French trading company in the seventeenth century to the independence and nationalist movements of the mid-twentieth century. Gauvin Bailey places particular emphasis on the human factor: the people who commissioned, built, and lived in these buildings. Almost all of these architects, both Europeans and non-Europeans, have remained unknown beyond – at best – their surnames. Through extensive archival research, this book reconstructs their lives, providing vital background for the buildings themselves. Much more than in the French empire of the Western Hemisphere, the buildings in this book adapt to indigenous styles, regardless of whether they were designed and built by European or non-European architects. The Architecture of Empire provides a unique, comprehensive study of structures that rank among the most fascinating examples of intercultural exchange in the history of global empires.
