Book excerpt: Dilemmas in Development is an account of the author’s professional experience as an agricultural economist and later as an aid manager, living overseas in Africa, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. From dealing with sisal nationalisation and coffee diversification in Tanzania, he worked on rural employment creation in Kenya. In Indonesia, he instigated programmes for smallholder rubber and coconut replanting. In the Philippines, he focused on farming systems for farmers forced onto hillsides. As economic adviser in London, he made several missions to India, being involved with farmer extension and agricultural credit schemes aimed at the rural poor. In Pakistan, he was concerned with irrigation schemes in Sind and Baluchistan. In the Caribbean, he played a role in sustaining the smallholder banana industry in the face of competition from Latin American producers. In Sudan, he confronted famine and civil war. While in Brussels, he engaged in political dialogue relating to post-conflict rehabilitation in Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Bougainville. In a concluding chapter, he reflects on the lessons of experience for outstanding development issues.

Book excerpt: How do ''types'' of aid differ? Why are there different kinds? When is one more appropriate than another? How can you tell ''good'' aid from ''bad''? Friends of the Earth commissioned Teresa Hayter, author of Aid as Imperialism and Aid: Rhetoric and Reality, to examine Britain's aid policy and practice, paying particular attention to its effects on the worlds forests. In this book she describes the history of the different forms of aid and their effects. On behalf of one of the West's most effective environmental lobbies, Exploited Earth show how and why British aid needs to change. Originally published in 1989

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nepal is associated, in most people's imagination, with Everest (Sagarmatha to the Nepalese), vivid plants and picturesque villages and people. The truth, as always, is other. It is one of the poorest countries in the world, surrounded by big and powerful neighbours. It is immensely diverse, ranging from the great mountains to the north through the trans-Himalaya, a high barren plateau, through the deep valleys, which include the one which contains the ancient cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, to the Terai which is an extension of Ganges plain. This atlas describes not only the complexity of the environment, but the people, the languages, the towns and industries, the agriculture, food and land management, the natural resources, the effects of tourism, sources of energy, transport and education policies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focusses on the role of craft as a continuing cultural practice and the revival of disappearing skills in contemporary society. It includes twenty-five essays by highly regarded artisans, academics, technologists, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, curators, and researchers from many countries representing a wide range of global craft traditions and innovations. The authors explain their professional practices and creative pathways with knowledge, experience, and passion. They offer insightful analyses of their traditions within their culture and in the marketplace, alongside the evolution of technology as it adapts to support experimentation and business strategies. They write about teaching and research informing their practice; and they explain the importance of their tools and materials in function and form of the objects they make. The essays reveal a poignant expression of their successes, disappointments, and opportunities. This book offers case studies of how artisans have harnessed the traditions of the past alongside the latest design technologies. The authors reveal how global craft is not only a vehicle for self-expression and creativity, but also for being deeply relevant to the world of work, community and environmental sustainability. The book makes the vital link between skills, knowledge, education, and employment, and fills a much-needed niche in Technical, Vocational Education and Training TVET.
