Book excerpt: Plant Parasitic Nematodes, Volume III provides a comprehensive discussion of the different advances in plant nematology. This includes biochemical techniques to taxonomy and innovation in transmission and scanning electron microscopy technology. It explains a broadened basis for understanding nematode physiology and behavior and the sensory mechanisms that govern nematode actions and plant host-nematode interactions. The book discusses the development of modern approaches to the evaluation and reduction of crop losses. The emphasis of this volume is on plant parasites and insights gained through research on other nematodes. In particular, the book explains the anatomical, developmental, behavioral, and genetic studies on the free-living nematode Cenorhabditis elegans, which is a widely used laboratory model for examining various biological problems. The information provided by various researches on C. elegans increases our understanding about the relevance of nematodes to general biological processes in higher organisms, including man. The book is divided into 19 chapters which cover the following concepts of plant nematology: biochemistry, cytochemistry, and genetics; morphology and function; host-parasite relations; and evaluation and control of crop losses. The present volume is an excellent reference for students, lecturers, and research professionals in plant parasitology and related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years the Keys have provided a working tool to those within the field and laboratory needing to know "what is this worm?" They have also helped to establish a classification, using associations of characters, that gives real insight into nematode relationships across the group and their lines of evolution. This supplementary volume is designed to complement the original CIH Keys, now reprinted as one volume, with the additional convenience of reordering into superfamily. The supplement includes revised and redescribed taxa and draws attention to new taxa, to generic level, published by many authors after the original Keys were complete. It also identifies the current position of some of the older genera not included in the original Keys.

Book excerpt: This third volume of Keys to Parasitic Nematodes is devoted to the largest suborder of nematodes - the strongylates. The strongylates include extremely pathogenic helminths which in a number of cases cause serious disease in man and in farm and commercial animals, often with a fatal outcome. Examples of these are anchylostomiasis and necatoriasis in man, delafondiasis and alfortiasis of horse, hemonchiasis and chabertiasis of sheep and dogs, bunostomiasis of cattle, hyostrongylosis of swine, etc. Due to the pathogenicity of the strongylates, it is natural that veterinarians and physicians, as well as biologists, should wish to familiarize themselves with the classification of these helminths. The present volume is "Key" which constitutes a handbook that includes all strongylates known at present to be animal parasites in all geographical zones of the world. However, this volume is not merely a mechanical list of all species comprising the strongylate group. The authors have carried out a thorough analysis of existing concepts relating to the taxonomy of this group of nematodes and now present a new system of classification of the strongylates based on all the material that was studied. In all, the new system embraced by the authors puts forward three super families, 17 families, 51 subfamilies and 245 genera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly titled Plant-Parasitic Nematodes: A Pictorial Key to Genera, this volume has been the standard work on plant disease around the globe. Now in its fifth edition, it remains the fundamental reference for students as well as for diagnosticians—a usable, comprehensive key to plant-parasitic nematodes and the only guide to feature both photographs and drawings. Accompanied by full-page plates, the book offers descriptions of 68 genera, including most that have one or more species known to be plant parasites. The bibliography of approximately 2,500 entries on the taxonomy and morphology of nematode genera is one of the fullest on this subject. For the present edition, the authors have made revisions throughout and have added references to more than two hundred genera not previously included. An updated taxonomy, glossary, and an index are also provided. William F. Mai is Liberty Hyde Bailey Emeritus professor, Peter G. Mullin is Coordinator of Laboratory Instruction, and Howard H. Lyon is Biological Photographer (retired) in the Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University.

Book excerpt: When I conceived this book, what I had in mind was what I did not know about coffee-parasitic nematodes (CPNs). Indeed, after reading many papers and several chapters in books, I felt far from having a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Not only would it be a daunting task to retrieve the numerous articles, reports, theses and dissertations on CPNs published since 1878, but it would also be impossible to learn, on my own, from all the enormous experience acquired by nematologists and coffee growers in so many countries. Therefore, this book is dedicated to those with restless minds, who want to know more about CPNs and their importance in coffee production worldwide. This book has been diligently written by top scientists in their areas of expertise or country, and it has been meticulously edited to guarantee precision without compromising an enjoyable read. I learned a lot from this book...I’m sure you will too. Finally, I’d like to thank Zuzana Bernhart from Springer, who believed in this project and decided to publish it; Susan Casement, who revised all chapters for grammatical correctness; and all the contributors, without whom this book would never have became a reality. Book excerpt: This final volume in the treatise Keys to Parastic Nematodes is devoted to the characters of five suborders of nematodes, compiled by five specialists. Suborder Trichocephalata and Diotophymata were compiled by K.I. Skryabin and N.P. Shikhobalova, and Rhabditata and Tylenchata by A.A. Sobolev and A.A. Paramonov. A.A. Sobolev analyzed the material on Camallanta, while V.E. Sudarikov compiled the chapter on the distribution of all known nematodes in different hosts recorded thus far, for all four volumes of this key. The importance of this volume is enhanced further by the most comprehensive index of animal hosts of all known parasitic nematodes reviewed. This comprehensive work is the first of its kind in helminthological literature; this type of treatise has never before been published in any country to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 offers a unique classification of two large suborders of nematodes: Oxyurata and Ascaridata. A total of 748 species, constituting 146 genera and 21 families, distributed among 4 superfamilies - Oxyuroidea, Subuleroidea, Cosmocercoidea, and Atractoidea - are included in the suborder Oxyurata. Another 424 species, included in 44 genera and 5 families, distributed in 2 superfamilies - Ascaridoidea and Anisakoidea - comprise the suborder Ascaridata. The present work is unique not only because it represents the first classification of all the known memgers of the suborder Oxyurata, and a radical revision of the taxonomy of the suborder Ascaridata, but also for defining taxonomic features for every taxon based on both the literature published in the last 100 years and extensive personal research. Helminthologists will welcome this book for two reasons: its obvious value in systematizing the oxyurids identified up to 1950 into a cohesive, scientifically well founded taxonomic subdivision of Nematoda, and as a collation of all the material published worldwide on members of the suborder Oxyurata available to the authors at that time.
