Book Synopsis Gods and Rollercoasters by : Crispin Paine
Download or read book Gods and Rollercoasters written by Crispin Paine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This worldwide study examines how religion gets into theme parks – as mission, as an aspect of culture, as fable, and by chance. Gods and Rollercoasters analyses religion in theme parks, looking at how it relates to modernism, popular culture, right-wing politics, nationalism, and the rise of the global middle class. Crispin Paine argues that religion has discovered a major new means of expression through theme parks. From the reconstruction of Biblical Jerusalem at the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, through the world of Chinese mythology at Haw Par Villa in Singapore, to the great temple/theme park Akshardham in New Delhi, this book shows how people are encountering and experiencing religion in the context of fun, thrills and leisure time. Drawing on examples from six of the seven continents, and exploring religious traditions including Christianity, Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, Gods and Rollercoasters provides a significant contribution to the study of religion, sociology, anthropology, and popular culture.
Book Synopsis Theme Park Fandom by : Rebecca Williams
Download or read book Theme Park Fandom written by Rebecca Williams and published by Transmedia. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theme Park Fandom argues that serious study of theme parks and their adult fans has much to tell us about contemporary transmediality and convergence, themed and immersive spaces, and audience relationships with places of meaning. Considering the duopoly of Disney and Universal in Orlando, the book explores a range of theme park experiences including planning trips, meeting characters, eating and drinking, engaging in practices such as cosplay and re-enactment, and memorializing lost attractions. Highlighting key themes such as immersion, materiality, cultural distinctions, and self-identity, the book argues that theme parks are a crucial site for the exploration of transmediality and the development of paratexts. Proposing the key concepts of spatial transmedia and haptic fandom, the book offers analysis of the intersections between fandom, media texts, and merchandise, as well as fans' own affective and physical responses to visiting the parks.

Download or read book Theming Asia written by Maribeth Erb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theming Asia: Culture, Nature and Heritage in a Transforming Environment presents a theoretical, thematic and empirical examination of theming, theme parks and themed spaces in contemporary Asia. Drawing on cases from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Singapore, it details how the proliferation of theming in places of consumption, education, entertainment and everyday life has shaped the social and spatial terrains of modern-day Asia. This is done largely through the radical transformation of ideas of culture, nature and heritage – a theoretical and empirical area that warrants urgent and dedicated scholarly inquiry. Providing an innovative study of theme parks and themed spaces in contemporary Asia, this publication highlights the critical role of theming in the making, ordering, branding, as well as contestation of cultural, natural and heritage places. The intersections of these processes are foregrounded within the context of Disneyization, the experience economy, imagineered spaces and debates over authenticity and superficiality. A diverse range of case studies, as well as a general theoretical introduction, give much room for revisiting and reimagining issues of culture and nature in a transforming Asia. This book was originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Section two considers theming as a reflection of nation, and its authors focus on Chinese theme parks and shopping malls, the Lost City theme park in South Africa, and the Ain Diab resort district in Casablanca. The third section of the book illustrates how theming often targets the person—whether famous or everyday. The authors look at spaces ranging from the Liverpool John Lennon Airport, love hotels in Japan, and the Houston, Texas theme park AstroWorld. The final section emphasizes theming as a projection of the mind and psychology. The authors focus on behind-the-scenes tourism at Universal Studios and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, the use of theming in unexpected spaces like Florida themed clinics, theming in virtual reality spaces of video games, and the social controversies related to theming in various parts of the world. The book includes a comprehensive bibliography on theming and a list of key terms. The Themed Space is of great interest to students of all levels and scholars of anthropology, urban studies and sociology.
Book Synopsis Performance and the Disney Theme Park Experience by : Jennifer A. Kokai
Download or read book Performance and the Disney Theme Park Experience written by Jennifer A. Kokai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses Disney parks using performance theory. Few to no scholars have done this to date—an enormous oversight given the Disney parks’ similarities to immersive theatre, interpolation of guests, and dramaturgical construction of attractions. Most scholars and critics deny agency to the tourist in their engagement with the Disney theme park experience. The vast body of research and journalism on the Disney “Imagineers”—the designers and storytellers who construct the park experience—leads to the misconception that these exceptional artists puppeteer every aspect of the guest’s experience. Contrary to this assumption, Disney park guests find a range of possible reading strategies when they enter the space. Certainly Disney presents a primary reading, but generations of critical theory have established the variety of reading strategies that interpreters can employ to read against the text. This volume of twelve essays re-centers the park experience around its protagonist: the tourist.
Book Synopsis Culture and Ideology at an Invented Place by : Zhang Pinggong
Download or read book Culture and Ideology at an Invented Place written by Zhang Pinggong and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a special kind of landscape, the theme park has become one of major subjects in interdisciplinary studies and received increasing scholarly attention in the past few decades. Perspectives have varied from American approaches which treat the theme park as the production base of the American Dream to various interpretation of the tourist space in semiotic, structural and post-modernistic approaches. Other studies of the theme park have been conducted in a practical way with a focus in economic development and urban designing for the local and peripheral surroundings. The body of research is enormous and has proved to be very beneficial in understanding the theme park as a multiple space in the ever-changing context. Overseas Chinese Town theme park (OCT) is one of the most popular tourist sights in China, a cultural space which epitomizes the country’s cultural business and Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, an emerging metropolis. As the ultimate icon of Chinese and global cultural representation, the theme park has attracted visitors the world over. This book presents for the first time an analysis of narratives which surround the park. The research of OCT is to shed a cultural, political and ideological light on the “modern pleasure space” constructed and consumed in contemporary China. In view of the overwhelming quantity of theme park study in the USA and Europe, a shift of orientation in the study of theme parks in China becomes significant as the emerging theme parks in the country are described as “springing up like bamboo shoots after a rain”. As an important study of an important contemporary phenomenon, it illustrates in considerable detail the distinctive nature of Chinese theme park development and will be of interest to a range of readers in fields such as cultural studies, tourism, sociology and human geography. “Non-Western theme parks have attracted very little attention from social scientists, even though they can be considered important sites for the examination of the influence and limits of globalization. With this important study of the OCT theme park, Zhang provides us with a detailed examination of the extent to which the Western model of the theme park is replicated in the Chinese context. In this way, he provides crucial insights that will be of great interest to students of globalization.” —Professor Alan Bryman, University of Leicester “The work provides a very readable, critical review of the recent development of theme parks in China, in particular the Overseas Chinese Town Theme Park at Shenzen. The work is well-grounded in a critical understanding of the role of theme parks as cultural “texts”… As an important study of an important contemporary phenomenon, it illustrates in considerable detail the distinctive nature of OCT park and will be of interest to a range of readers in fields such as cultural studies, tourism, sociology and human geography.” —Professor Stephen Williams, Staffordshire University
