Book excerpt: The key turning point of the campaign came with the four Kennedy-Nixon debates; they were the first presidential debates ever (The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 had been the first for senators from Illinois), also the first held on television, and thus attracted enormous publicity. Nixon insisted on campaigning until just a few hours before the first debate started. He had not completely recovered from his hospital stay and thus looked pale, sickly, underweight, and tired. His eyes moved across the room during the debate, and at various moments sweat was visible on his face. He also refused makeup for the first debate, and as a result, his beard stubble showed prominently on the era's black-and-white TV screens. Furthermore, the debate set appeared darker once the paint dried up, causing Nixon's suit color to blend in with the background which reduced his stature. Nixon's poor appearance on television in the first debate is reflected by the fact that his mother called him immediately following the debate to ask if he was sick. Kennedy, by contrast, rested and prepared extensively beforehand, appearing tanned, confident, and relaxed during the debate. An estimated 70 million viewers watched the first debate.

Kennedy, the Democratic nominee,and Vice President Richard Nixon, the Republican nominee, in Chicago atthe studios of CBS's WBBM-TV. It was moderated by Howard K. Smithand included a panel composed of Sander Vanocur of NBC News, CharlesWarren of Mutual News, and Stuart Novins of CBS. Historian J.N.Druckman observed "television primes its audience to rely more on theirperceptions of candidate image (e.g., integrity). At the same time,television has also coincided with the world becoming more polarized andideologically driven." Nixon was considered a poor performer ontelevision as he didn't have the same telegenic looks in contrast to JFK,although radio listeners found that Nixon had done as well if not better thanJFK in the first debate. While Nixon was considered the better debater withmore policy knowledge and good radio skills, he looked underweight andpale from his recent hospital stay, plus he sweated profusely. Nixon's suitcolor blended in with the debate set background which reduced his stature and refusing television makeup he had a 5 O'Clock shadow that showedprominently on the era's black-and-white TV screens. Many observershave regarded JFK's win over Nixon in the first debate as a turning point inthe election. After the first debate, polls showed Kennedy movingfrom a slight deficit into a slight lead over Nixon.Three more debates were subsequently held between the candidates:[8] OnOctober 7 at the WRC-TV NBC studio in Washington, D.C., narrated byFrank McGee with a panel of four newsmen Paul Niven, CBS; Edward P.Morgan, ABC; Alvin Spivak, UPI;[9] Harold R. Levy, Newsday; October13, with Nixon at the ABC studio in Los Angeles and Kennedy at the ABCstudio in New York, narrated by Bill Shadel with a panel of four newsmen;and October 21 at the ABC studio in New York, narrated by Quincy Howewith a panel of four including Frank Singiser, John Edwards, WalterCronkite, and John Chancellor. Nixon regained his lost weight, woretelevision makeup, and appeared more forceful than in his initialappearance, winning the second and third debates while the fourth was adraw, however the viewership numbers of these subsequent events did notmatch the high set by the first debate. Nixon later refused to do televisiondebates in 1968 and 1972 as he felt his appearance had cost him againstJFK in the tight-run race.

In its first part it will concentrate on the question of what constitutes a debate and how it can be contrasted with other types of conversation like discussion or arguement. Especially political speech has always been reproached for ambigious language or persuasive usage to deceive the listener. Thus, the coursework will digress a bit to investigate the matter a bit further before starting to juxtapose the video material of the television debate - important terminology shall be introduced beforehand - and the speeches as such in their raw material. At the end of the coursework you will find a DVD attached that shows the first television debate of Kennedy and Nixon. As several pictures of this debate are included in this coursework, I will quickly explain how to find them on the DVD. The DVD contains two chapters with 4 tracks each. The tracks, however, are not as important as the chapters since the counter starts again at 0:00:00 as soon as the second chapter starts. The entire DVD has an approximate running time of 30 minutes, 15 minutes for each chapter. Thus, referring to a specific point in the video material, I simply put down the time-code where to find it, for instance 0:12:23, which means 12 minutes and 23 seconds in the first chapter, while 0:12:23 [2] refers to the same time-code but in the second chapter, as indicated by the number in brackets.
