Book Synopsis 'Keeping the Sources Pure' by : Sabine Schmid
Download or read book 'Keeping the Sources Pure' written by Sabine Schmid and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assesses the literary stature of George Mackay Brown by contextualising his prose and his poetry within twentieth-century British and European literary practices and traditions of thought. Challenging the typecasting of Brown as 'Orkney writer', the book links him with European Modernism and reveals the complex web of experiences, influences and relationships that shaped Brown's poetic development. This comparative study argues that Edwin Muir, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Thomas Mann analysed remarkably similar cultural and spiritual phenomena, inspiring Brown's own work. Muir travelled back into what he called the racial memory of the tribe. Hopkins aimed for a revival of religious values and the recovery of the sacramental power of the word. Thomas Mann felt that man must discover and put into practice a 'new humanism' which would embrace the mythic-archetypal structure of the unconscious and man's individual consciousness. All four writers attempted to 'get back to the roots and sources' by probing the ways in which individuals and society as a whole gain a better understanding of and a more meaningful relationship with their pasts. This book chronicles George Mackay Brown's personal and artistic journey, from his early reporting days on an Orkney newspaper, through spells in hospital recovering from tuberculosis, to his friendship with Edwin Muir and growing confidence in his own vision.

Book Synopsis Narrative Elements in the Double Tradition by : Stephen Hultgren
Download or read book Narrative Elements in the Double Tradition written by Stephen Hultgren and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time mainstream gospel scholarship has assumed that the so-called Q material (the "double tradition") in Matthew and Luke represents a document or tradition that was almost exclusively orientated towards the sayings of Jesus of Nazareth, with little interest in a narrative about him. This book argues, on the contrary, that the narrative material in the double tradition existed from the very beginning within a coherent Jesus narrative that ran from his baptism to his passion. Far from being inserted by Matthew and Luke into the framework of Mark, the double tradition is structured on the very same narrative framework as the Gospel of Mark (a framework that predates Mark). Conventional dichotomies in gospel origins, the historical Jesus, and the history of early Christianity are thus drawn into question.

Book Synopsis Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism by : Sarit Kattan Gribetz
Download or read book Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism written by Sarit Kattan Gribetz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the rabbis of late antiquity used time to define the boundaries of Jewish identity The rabbinic corpus begins with a question–“when?”—and is brimming with discussions about time and the relationship between people, God, and the hour. Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism explores the rhythms of time that animated the rabbinic world of late antiquity, revealing how rabbis conceptualized time as a way of constructing difference between themselves and imperial Rome, Jews and Christians, men and women, and human and divine. In each chapter, Sarit Kattan Gribetz explores a unique aspect of rabbinic discourse on time. She shows how the ancient rabbinic texts artfully subvert Roman imperialism by offering "rabbinic time" as an alternative to "Roman time." She examines rabbinic discourse about the Sabbath, demonstrating how the weekly day of rest marked "Jewish time" from "Christian time." Gribetz looks at gendered daily rituals, showing how rabbis created "men's time" and "women's time" by mandating certain rituals for men and others for women. She delves into rabbinic writings that reflect on how God spends time and how God's use of time relates to human beings, merging "divine time" with "human time." Finally, she traces the legacies of rabbinic constructions of time in the medieval and modern periods. Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism sheds new light on the central role that time played in the construction of Jewish identity, subjectivity, and theology during this transformative period in the history of Judaism.

Book Synopsis Environmental Conservation And Sustainable Management Of Natural Resources by : Dr. Prabhash Kumar
Download or read book Environmental Conservation And Sustainable Management Of Natural Resources written by Dr. Prabhash Kumar and published by OrangeBooks Publication. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been designed as a text book for students. Therefore, every effort has been made to make the subject matter very simple. Due to the importance of environmental education, it has been made compulsory in various competitive examinations. Today it is very important to be sensitive towards the deteriorating environment because the happiness and peace of our human race remains. Environment is defined as the total planetary heritage and the totality of all resources. It includes all organic and inorganic factors which affect each other. All living elements like birds, animals, plants, forests, fisheries etc. are organic elements whereas inorganic elements include air, water, land etc. Rocks and sunlight are examples of inorganic elements of the environment. Environmental studies need to study the interrelationships between these organic and inorganic components of the environment. The environment performs four important functions. It provides resources. The resources here include renewable and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources are those resources that can be used without the resources being exhausted or likely to be exhausted. That is, there is a constant supply of resources. Examples of renewable resources are forest plants and marine fish. On the other hand, non-renewable resources are those which get exhausted by digging and use. Environment is becoming a matter of concern for everyone today. The way we are exploiting the environment today, its impact is to be faced by us or our descendants in the coming days. You are seeing that somewhere there is a flood and somewhere there has been a drought. Today we are making full use of coal, wood etc. Never do we think how long it took for coal to be made. Will it be saved for the next generation or not? It needs to be saved for the future. Will be saved only when you use another resource of energy. How will you know about the second resource when you read a book related to the environment. In this book, all the measures to save natural resources have been told. This book is not limited to students, it can also be useful for those people who are knowingly or unknowingly dissolving the pollutants from their factories, vehicles and sound equipment in the environment and are blaming nature when they face difficulties. Nature is an object of enjoyment for them. This book can also benefit the distinguished people who are environmental reformers for the society.
