It comprises of more than sixteen thousand islands with hundreds of ethnic and linguistic communities, but it is one nation with one official language. It is the largest Muslim-majority country in the world, but it is governed under a democratic system, and it is one of the largest democracies on the planet. It is a nation known for being rich in natural resources since colonial times, but until recently refined oil and gas are imported. It is an island-nation surrounded by sea water, but for its daily consumption of salt the country said to be importing from other countries. In its early days Indonesia declared itself a democratic republic, but the first two presidents intended to rule as long as they wished, just like a hereditary king. It claims to be religious and full-of-smile nation, but there has been no official regret for the killings of hundreds of thousands of human done by its citizens half a century earlier. Indeed, it's a land of interesting paradoxes. By using informal historical approach, this book is an invitation to the reader to sit back and reflect upon past events, issues, thoughts and hopes that are still very much operative in Indonesia today. The result might be the discovery of bright insights not only for keeping the hopes alive but also for creating a better collective future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is the first systematic effort to map the fast-growing phenomenon of memory activism and to delineate a new field of research that lies at the intersection of memory and social movement studies. From Charlottesville to Cape Town, from Santiago to Sydney, we have recently witnessed protesters demanding that symbols of racist or colonial pasts be dismantled and that we talk about histories that have long been silenced. But such events are only the most visible instances of grassroots efforts to influence the meaning of the past in the present. Made up of more than 80 chapters that encapsulate the rich diversity of scholarship and practice of memory activism by assembling different disciplinary traditions, methodological approaches, and empirical evidence from across the globe, this Handbook establishes important questions and their theoretical implications arising from the social, political, and economic reality of memory activism. Memory activism is multifaceted, takes place in a variety of settings, and has diverse outcomes – but it is always crucial to understanding the constitution and transformation of our societies, past and present. This volume will serve as a guide and establish new analytic frameworks for scholars, students, policymakers, journalists, and activists alike.

Book excerpt: Jakarta Geopolitical Forum V/ 2021 (JGF V/2021) organized by Lemhannas RI (National Resilience Institute of the Republic of Indonesia) on 21-22 October 2021. The forum is held annually and aimed to explore the implementation of critical thinking and the development of new ideas and strategic thingking which are the annual routine agenda of the Deputy for Strategic Studies of Lemhannas RI based on its main tasks and functions. Today's global civilization is evolving to determine its identity and is rapidly reaching a tipping point that will decide whether it will lead to a new or divided civilization. The vulnerability of mankind is a significant threat to the development of civilization in the future. An increasingly interconnected global civilization will emerge as a result of the interwoven culture of nations around the world and vice versa. The question that needs attention is whether Indonesia is able to adapt to the changes in existing civilizations or we can prevent various unexpected civilization possibilities in the future as well as the capabilily of Indonesia to bridge the gap between civilizations. Based on that, the theme of JGF V/ 2021 is "Culture and Civilization: Humanity at the Crossroads". The objectives to be achieved in organizing JGF V/2021 are to understand the form of future civilization, especially the socio-culture structure of the world's humans, to find out how far the culture and civilization of a nation is maintained in the midst of changes that occur, the mindset to adapt to the new civilization environment and knowing the extent of the correlation between the influence and change of civilization conveyed by world geopolitical experts from various countries.

Taking transnational, transregional and comparative approaches, it explores narratives of inclusion and exclusion both conceptually and through case studies. Exploring examples of marginalization in Imperial Russia, early-20th century Korea, WWII China and Postcolonial Africa amongst others, the chapters in this volume seek to understand the entanglements of 'fluid minorities' and native populations in various historical settings. They explore dynamics between nation states and empires, minority-majority processes in (post)imperial and (post)Soviet contexts, fourth world perspectives and transnational minority movements. Taken together, the contributions to this collection address the exposure to and challenge of historical and contemporary treatments of marginalization, exclusion, belonging and inclusion in global history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018 the Indonesian economy recorded a growth rate of 5.2%, the highest in five years. This was in spite of a slump in the rupiah and a trade imbalance, and took place against a backdrop of rising US interest rates and deteriorating trade relations between the world’s two biggest economies. The country’s emphasis on industrialisation and infrastructure development is laying the foundations for continued economic growth. Moreover, the archipelago’s growing middle class population, geographical position and human capital development agenda, alongside progress in free-trade agreements, make it a strong contender on the global economic stage. The country holds considerable potential for developing entrepreneurial and creative prowess, already being home to four unicorn startups. Investors have continued to look beyond traditional destinations, with emerging cities like Surabaya and Palembang showing strong possibilities for economic growth. Although the outcome of the April 2019 national election will determine the course of further infrastructure development and tax reforms, the future looks promising, with predictions of continued growth accompanied by stable inflation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly forty years, following the collapse of Indonesia's parliamentary system, Indonesia's once independent legal institutions were transformed into dedicated instruments of a powerful elite and allowed to sink into a deep mire of corruption and malfeasance. Legal process was devastated far beyond the capacity of any simple effort at reconstruction by post-Suharto governments. Indonesia's problems in this respect surpass those of other countries in the region compelled by economic crisis to re-examine institutional structures. The works reprinted in this collection constitute a case study over time of legal decay and the rise of reform interests in one of the most complex countries in the world. Written during a period of more than thirty years, beginning in the early 1960s, the essays trace several themes in the legal history of modern Indonesia. They make clear, however, that legal history is seldom that alone, but rather, like law itself, is largely derivative, fundamentally imbedded in the interest, ideas, purposes, and contentions of local political, social, and economic power.

The aim has thus been to give comprehensive coverage to forms a foreigner might run across in Indonesian readings, from this era or from the past, but excluding classical Malay literature, Much of the Indonesian written production (written and otherwise) contains slangy, colloquial, and regional forms, and we have not excluded such forms. On the other hand we have confined the listing of dialectical forms only to those likely to be widely known...The dictionary should also be useful to Indonesians who wish to learn English equivalents of Indonesian words, but it has not been developed primarily for that purpose, because many English words can only be defined by a sequence of Indonesian words." from Introduction.
