Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details my high school experience playing water polo, except, it's not solely about water polo. So don't worry if you don't know the first thing about the game. You will by the end. I use polo as a metaphor, so there is some description to get a layman up to speed. And if you played, well, it might take you back that much more. Living and breathing one of the most demanding team sports in the world does leave an impression on a young person. Reliving those moments have been revitalizing. Of course, it is a love note to the sport, also, to my quirky high school, home life, and to the era in which I grew up -- a late 80s coming of age tale. In fact, it will become obvious how much I enjoy 80s nostalgia in my vernacular, quotes, movie references, and new wave music lyrics. (I challenge you to pick out every last one.)Why even tell the story? Well, I discovered a few things during a time of recent difficulty and got the inclination to write it all out. I came to some conclusions and hope in sharing... they might help you make sense of your story. I don't tell my tale just to relive past glory, or to remind myself how good I used to be blocking Mikasa polo balls; I believe there is a lot to gain from understanding another's journey, walking a mile in another's skin. My story may seem hard to believe, but these events are absolutely true, even though it reads a bit like teen fiction at times. I believe the best movies and books are based on true experiences. It has been challenging and rewarding to put into words how the world of polo impacted me in a way that most can draw from. However relatable you find my story, I cannot guarantee if someone enrolls for the sport next semester, they will have the same experience as I did -- exactly what makes the sport so great. Yes, I discovered a few things about myself during my water polo days. Perhaps the insights of a forty-something-year-old reliving those moments just might entertain and encourage you. Brandon

Book excerpt: FUNNIER THAN ADRIAN MOLE AND FAR SEXIER! Does not skirt round the vast injustice of apartheid SUPERB MEMOIR Joffe is a man sui generis. Impish at times, but always interesting. Memorable and well written! AN INTIMATE, FUNNY, AND PROFOUND PERSONAL HISTORY Reading this funny, clever, sometimes vicious portrayal of growing up in Johannesburg in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, I found myself reminded of Blakes line To see a world in a grain of sand. This is because Joffe, in writing a detailed and often very amusing account of his personal adventures and misadventures, captures also the texture of the broader environment, the brutal decades of racist horror of his native land. Joffe relates events with the engaging rhythm of all great story tellers - there are villains like sadistic teachers and fatuous fathers-in-law, there are lost adolescents in pursuit of sex and meaning, there are coming of age crises and triumphs, and an almost Dickensian host of memorable, often quirky, family members and friends. Read it, and you will see what I mean. Read it and youll laugh frequently. Read it and youll better understand the last 80 years of South African history. BRILLIANT MEMOIR Fascinating portrait of life in pre-Mandela South Africa, packed with very fine vignettes. A page-turning account of adolescence and the pains of growing up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last 25 years, a constraints-based framework has helped to inform the way that many sport scientists seek to understand performance, learning design and the development of expertise and talent in sport. The Constraints-Led Approach: Principles for Sports Coaching and Practice Design provides students and practitioners with the theoretical knowledge required to implement constraints-led approaches in their work. Seeking to bridge the divide between theory and practice, the book sets out an ‘environment design framework’, including practical tools and guidance for the application of the framework in coaching and skill acquisition settings. It includes chapters on constraints-led approaches in golf, athletics and hockey, and provides applied reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of motor learning, skill acquisition and developing sport expertise. Providing a thorough grounding in the theory behind constraints-led approaches to skill acquisition, and a foundational cornerstone in the Routledge Studies in Constraints-Based Methodologies in Sport series, this is a vital pedagogical resource for students and practising sports coaches, physical education teachers and sport scientists alike.
