Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years now, we have established a firm commitment to spread the authentic legacy of Kodokan Judo founder, Jigoro Kano. Through conferences, interviews, seminars in several countries and several books published in 4 languages we have managed to reach thousands of people around the world who have known principles, katas and techniques that are forgotten or disused today. As we all know, Kodokan Judo has been redirected solely towards the sporting side, turning its back on many aspects that made Kodokan Judo a precious and complete art. A situation that the current international Judo leaders are not interested in reversing. Our work of research, translation and verification has been hard, but thanks to our passion for the work of Jigoro Kano we have exposed much of what many teachers of Kodokan Judo and Jujutsu know and practice daily following the authentic legacy of Prof. Kano. This is not only limited to randori or shiai. In this book we made the study about the method of personal defense (Goshin Jutsu) of the teacher Kazuo Ito, who was undoubtedly the best student of Kyuzo Mifune. Both were exceptional Judokas, defenders of tradition, of the highest values of Budo and to protect the legacy of Jigoro Kano. Kyuzo Mifune and Kazuo Ito followed the teachings and advice of Jigoro Kano and years after his death they continued to teach the world a Judo complete, including in their works and videos various types of techniques that are not used today in sports Judo, as for example dislocations of dolls, knees, ankles, atemi waza and different forms of self-defense. Download or read book Jigoro Kano, Writings of Kodokan Judo Founder written by Jigoro Kano and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Jigoro Kano worked continuously for the diffusion, promotion and improvement of the ́Kodokan Judo ́.Since its founding in 1882 as a modern and evolved system of Ju-Jitsu, Kano provided not only an extensive technical curriculum, but also a philosophical approach, which made Kodokan Judo somewhat different from the warrior arts of the past. There are many documents currently available to the judo enthusiast, and it is relatively easy to get a general idea of Master Kano's thinking. But there are old writings, phrases, tips, maxims and proverbs that are hardly known today, unknown to most, all of them written directly by Jigoro Kano, where we learn through his thoughts the traditional principles of Kodokan Judo, competition, techniques of self-defense, social and family relations, proper time use and ultimately how to be useful in society among many other aspects. We have had the opportunity to gather all this material and through this work we have put it to the full service for all lovers of martial arts. We also include photos of the founding master of Kodokan Judo, some of them unpublished. Desiring that this work is to your liking, we recommend you to carefully read each sentence, each line and each paragraph, then you will perceive the enormous capacity and richness of the thoughts of a man who was ahead of his time to leave us as a legacy this beautiful art: Kodokan Judo.

Book Synopsis The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) by : H. Irving Hancock
Download or read book The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) written by H. Irving Hancock and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-16 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best guide to learning jiu-jitsu ever written in English, this is the most comprehensive study available. It describes the authentic form of judo developed in the late 19th century by Professor Jiguro Kano — not the many imitations often called by this name. Officially recognized by the Japanese government as the preeminent school of jiu-jitsu, the Kano system was the method in which Japanese armed forces and police were trained. The complete system of 160 holds and throws is clearly explained, with 487 photographs and four charts providing further clarification. Pressure points, balance, falling, and every other important aspect receives full and complete treatment. The first section presents 60 "tricks" of combat in strict sequence that prepare for part two, in which readers learn how to apply the advantages of the tricks they've learned. The third section deals with highly scientific tricks of combat, by which an opponent may be incapacitated — and the methods of kuatsu, or resuscitation, by which a fallen opponent may be revived. Martial arts students at every level of experience will find this classic guide a source of valuable information and instruction.

Book Synopsis TORITE NO KATA (English) by : Bruce R Bethers
Download or read book TORITE NO KATA (English) written by Bruce R Bethers and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the sphere of Traditional Kodokan Judo, various self-defense methods and katas were created and practiced by Kodokan Judo students at different times. One of these methods was the Torite No Kata, created in 1924 by a group of Kodokan Judo experts belonging to the metropolitan police force. This study was led by the teacher Yamashita Yoshitsugu (first 10th Dan of Kodokan Judo) with the approval of the teacher Jigoro Kano. Torite No Kata shows great technical refinement and preserves the shinken shobu principles of Traditional Kodokan Judo and ancient Jujutsu. By studying the Torite No Kata carefully we will learn how to perform the atemi correctly, how to defend ourselves against different knife attacks, how to locate vital points, how to perform joint lock techniques on the fingers, wrist, knee, ankle and elbow, and how to learn some forms of renkoho or police driving. It is therefore an extremely useful and effective kata from the perspective of self-defense. Unfortunately, this method has fallen into disuse. Our goal is to teach and spread this kata so that students and teachers from all disciplines can benefit from this formidable method.

Book Synopsis Fighting Scholars by : Raúl Sánchez García
Download or read book Fighting Scholars written by Raúl Sánchez García and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Fighting Scholars’ offers the first book-length overview of the ethnographic study of martial arts and combat sports. The book’s main claim is that such activities represent privileged grounds to access different social dimensions, such as emotion, violence, pain, gender, ethnicity and religion. In order to explore these dimensions, the concept of ‘habitus’ is presented prominently as an epistemic remedy for the academic distant gaze of the effaced academic body. The book’s most innovative features are its empirical focus and theoretical orientation. While ethnographic research is a widespread and popular approach within the social sciences, combat sports and martial arts have yet to be sufficiently interrogated from an ethnographic standpoint. The different contributions of this volume are aligned within the same project that began to crystallize in Loïc Wacquant’s ‘Body and Soul’: the construction of a ‘carnal sociology’ that constitutes an exploration of the social world ‘from’ the body.

Book Synopsis Shushinho - The Superior Level of Judo by : Jose Caracena
Download or read book Shushinho - The Superior Level of Judo written by Jose Caracena and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2020-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Jigoro Kano classified Kodokan Judo under what he called the 3 cultures or levels of Judo: Shobuho (as warrior and combat art), Rentaiho (as a physical and sports education system) and Shushinho (as a method for moral development), intellectual and ethical). On this occasion, the study is directed towards Shushinho, which according to Jigoro Kano is the highest level of Kodokan Judo. It is well known the capacity and depth that Kano showed in his writings and documents where we conclude that he was an exceptional man, an educator ahead of his time and a Bujutsu teacher who tirelessly helped preserve traditions while adapting the methodology of his school to modern times. Therefore, moral and intellectual development had a relevant role in the doctrine of the founder of Kodokan Judo. It is for this reason that we have ventured to collect, classify, translate and publish ancient writings by Jigoro Kano that appeared mainly in old interviews, contributions in newspapers and specialized magazines, in ancient Kodokan Judo readings, etc. We have divided it into 7 chapters arranged chronologically. In all the chapters, Kano speaks to us about the need to use time correctly, about austerity in expenses, he advises us on the ideal form of combat, feelings and of friendship, of the best way to resolve conflicts between people, of the values that must prevail in any society, of honesty, etc. Sometimes he even explains his doctrine in a hard, direct tone and with some criticism of what was happening in judo and in society at that time. Reading and assimilating each chapter makes the reader move to the mind of who was an exemplary man, of a visionary who knew how to extend the benefits of Kodokan Judo to Japan at that time and later to the rest of the world.
Book Synopsis Budo Training in Aikido by : Morihei Ueshiba
Download or read book Budo Training in Aikido written by Morihei Ueshiba and published by Japan Publications. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRANSLATOR' S INTRODUCTION We would like to begin by thanking Doshu Ueshiba Kisshomaru and the Aikikai Foundation for making this family treasure available for publication. We also wish to express our appreciation to those teachers who gave their invaluable help in explaining difficult passages. Due to the historical nature of this work certain difficulties arose, especially in deciding to what degree we should try to produce clear and precise English. Any precise translation could easily become a personal translation, limiting the contents and range of the translator's individual understanding at this particular point in his or her training. Therefore, after consulting some of the highest Sensei in Aikido and other arts it was decided to strive for a translation that would both preserve the simplicity of the original expression and at the same time leave open to the reader at least the possibility of coming up with the broad set of ideas and associations indicated in the Japanese. This book appeared in 1933 and is the first published account of O-Sensei's art. Although not actually written down by him, it is a transcription of lectures and explanations which was later reviewed by the founder and approved as a teacher's manual. The political and historical context of the times should be kept in mind. No attempt has been made to edit the text. The original copy has O-Sensei's title which was simply "Budo Renshu", i.e. "Budo Training". Later the second Doshu annotated this with the word "Aikido". The Dojo decided on using the original name here despite the fact that most Japanese copies are entitled Aikijujutsu Ogi", or "The Secrets of Aikijujutsu". The latter is actually an interpretive heading used by the copyists. The original was hand-written and illustrated. Later this was copied out several times, using tracing paper to reproduce the illustrations. During this process errors easily crept in. By comparing various copies, most of the poems could be deciphered despite their flowerly writing style. However only a few of the tracing mistakes have been corrected here. In other cases the terms 'left' and 'right' had been reversed. This seems to be the result of confusing Nage's point of view Uke's. In this edition these obvious errors have been corrected to match the illustrations. The poems presented the biggest problems. Much effort was spent to offer the reader a translation which presents as closely as possible the same degree of lee- ay for interpretation, insight and error, as appears in the original. Two versions are offered. One reflects the 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic structure of five line, Japanese Waka poetry. Each line in English contains the same groups of words found in the corresponding line of Japanese. The second attempt is to put the poem into a somewhat clearer English syntax. Another interesting point about the poems is that not all of them are original compositions of O-Sensei. At least a few can be traced to other martial traditions. Please note that the parentheses indicate the insertion, for your reference, of a Japanese word used in the text for the preceding English word (except for a few cases in the technique section where O-Sensei used parentheses in the original). Square brackets are the translator's insertions for the sake of the English. By simply deleting the sections enclosed by them, they allow readers to refer to O-Sensei's exact words, if they choose to do so. Although not for the beginner, it is hoped that access to this historically important text will be useful in understanding Aikido and its origins for those who have taken Budo as their 'Way'. Download or read book The Judoka written by W. D. Norwood Jr. and published by MWI Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "judoka" refers to one who does judo, the modern martial art with origins in 19th century Japan, a fighting art with a particular emphasis on the use of an opponent's own strengths to effect his defeat. This book is an account of the adventures of such a man, a judoka, but it is not just about this man, or the martial art he practices. Rather, it is about the "way" of judo, as both a fighting art and an approach to living ("a way"), and what this way might be able to tell us about who we are and who we might choose to become. The book does not prescribe "a way" for others to follow; that is, it does not simply offer advice about what to believe or how to behave, or point out the faults in other ways of being. It simply describes the way of one particular man, with commentary explaining, or rather reasoning through, the choices he has made, with the story presenting the consequences that these choices have for him. Reviews for the 1st edition: "This extraordinary little novella is reminiscent of Castaneda but far more intelligible." -Alan Watts "His direct writing about judo is clear and quietly restrained, hard to match in the literature of the subject." -New York Times
Book Synopsis The Lost Kata of Kodokan Judo by : Bruce R. Bethers
Download or read book The Lost Kata of Kodokan Judo written by Bruce R. Bethers and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work makes a profound and unprecedented study of 6 ancient kata that are practically in disuse, some of these katas were created directly by Jigoro Kano and others by first generation students or by the direction of the Kodokan. They are therefore part of the more traditional judo and deserve to occupy a place in the regular practice of judo and jujutsu. These 6 katas have a unique beauty, worthy of being preserved and spread so that they can reach new generations of Instructors and teachers, and thus return to Judo all that has been lost along the way and honorably honor the memory of the master Jigoro Kano. Book Synopsis Budo Perspectives by : Alexander Bennett
Download or read book Budo Perspectives written by Alexander Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud is one of Japan's most significant contributions to the world's athletic heritage. In fact, I consider bud to be Japan's most successful cultural export. Wherever you go in the world, even in the remotest towns of the farthest countries, there is a high probability that there will be a 'd j ' of some sort in the community. In that d j you will find the local people barefooted, dressed in Japanese d -gi, obeying commands in the Japanese language, bowing the Japanese way, and more often than not, there will be a Japanese flag or a picture of some great Japanese master from the past occupying a prominent part of the d j . Interestingly, probably not one of the members will have ever been to Japan, and contact with Japanese people will be limited. There will always be some idiosyncrasies in the way training is conducted stemming from the fact that it is not actually Japan, and there are many aspects which have to be adapted to suit that particular social milieu.
