At present, a theological conversation of Pentecostals with Barth does not exist and this volume fills this void. More widely, it will aid all those who seek a convergence of the Word and the Spirit in theology. Barth and Pentecostals share some important common theological interests. Barth's mature theology has a decidedly christological emphasis. Likewise, historically, Pentecostals have often spoken of a “full gospel” with an emphasis on Christ as savior, healer, baptizer (in the Spirit), and soon-and-coming King, with some Pentecostal traditions also adding a fifth emphasis on Christ the sanctifier. Furthermore, near the end of his life, Barth anticipated “the possibility of a theology of the third article, a theology where the Holy Spirit would dominate and be decisive.” The realization of Barth's dream is no doubt coming to pass in part through the development of Pentecostal theology in as much as pneumatological theology (exploring how pneumatology affects, supplements, and might reform other doctrines) is an emerging paradigm for Pentecostal theology.

Such uncritical acceptance is itself a good reason to devote a special study to Barth’s doctrine of Holy Scripture, because, no matter how we assess it, the Church Dogmatics of Karl Barth is one of the greatest forces in the modern theological world. In its vastness and variety, its comprehensiveness and detail, it constitutes a challenge to every school. Nor is it to be met by caricature or sweeping generalization. The individual themes demand searching analysis and appraisal at the exegetical, historical, and dogmatic levels at which Barth himself develops them. Only on the basis of detailed treatment can there be ultimate understanding and assessment of the whole. It is because Dr. Runia tackles this preliminary problem that his present work is so significant. He does not add to the list of general books. Choosing a critical and sensitive area, he devotes himself to the concentrated task of presenting the Barthian teaching on inspiration in its normative form. In the course of his analysis he examines the proposed biblical basis of Barth’s statement and brings it into lively interaction with the Reformation tradition which Barth believes that he represents. By means of a thorough inquiry into the single point, Dr. Runia thus gives us a far more informative, stimulating, and authoritative criticism that is possible in more comprehensive studies. The result is a valuable work which deserves to be widely studied and which should serve as a model for similar investigations into the many detailed themes of the Dogmatics. It is characterized by an honesty and relevance which gives it more than a narrowly academic interest. The real problems are faced, and it is candidly the most orthodox of statements. Yet the great verities of the traditional doctrine emerge the clearer and stronger for this powerful discussion, and in such a way that they may again make their salutary impact on a wider theological front.

Defining and recognising nationhood as distinct from the state is an important though underappreciated task in Barth's theology. It flows out of his deep concern for the capacity for nationalist dogma - that every nation must have its own state - to promote warfare. The problem motivated him to make his famous break with German liberal protestant theology. In this book, Carys Moseley traces how Barth reconceived nationhood in the light of a lifelong interest in the exegesis and preaching of the Pentecost narrative in Acts 2. She shows how his responsibilities as a pastor of the Swiss Reformed Church required preaching on this text as part of the church calendar, and thus how his defence of the inclusion of the filioque clause in the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed stemmed from his ministry, homiletics and implicit missiology. The concern to deny that nations exist primordially in creation was a crucial reason for Barth's dissent from his contemporaries over the orders of creation, and that his polemic against 'natural theology' was largely driven by rejection of the German liberal idea that the rise and fall of nations is part of a cycle of nature which simply reflect divine action. Against this conceit, Barth advanced his famous doctrine of the election of Israel as part of the election of the community of the people of God. This is the way into understanding the division of the world into nations, and the divine recognition of all nations as communities wherein people are meant to seek God.
