Book Synopsis Kant im Streit der Fakultäten by : Volker Gerhardt
Download or read book Kant im Streit der Fakultäten written by Volker Gerhardt and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last work published by Kant himself is a study of the relationship of philosophy to other academic disciplines. The very title of the work, Streit der Fakultäten (Dispute between the Faculties), published in 1797, makes it clear that the various disciplines are related critically, even polemically, to each other. As academic disciplines they share common obligations of knowledge, enlightenment and education; in their relationship with each other, however, they have the duty to contest the means and aims of knowledge. There can only be living science where this dispute about knowledge is conducted with the means of knowledge. In this volume, representatives of the faculties addressed by Kant give their assessment of Kant's relevance for their disciplines. As the Dispute between the Faculties was and is of importance for the foundation of the University of Berlin, Kant's contribution to university reform is also considered.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Phenomenology by : Cynthia D. Coe
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Phenomenology written by Cynthia D. Coe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the complex dialogue between German Idealism and phenomenology, two of the most important movements in Western philosophy. Twenty-four newly authored chapters by an international group of well-known scholars examine the shared concerns of these two movements; explore how phenomenologists engage with, challenge, and critique central concepts in German Idealism; and argue for the continuing significance of these ideas in contemporary philosophy and other disciplines. Chapters cover not only the work of major figures such as Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty, but a wide range of philosophers who build on the phenomenological tradition, including Fanon, Gadamer, and Levinas. These essays highlight key themes of the nature of subjectivity, the role of intersubjectivity, the implications for ethics and aesthetics, the impact of time and history, and our capacities for knowledge and understanding. Key features: · Critically engages two of the major philosophical movements of the last 250 years · Draws on the insights of those movements to address contemporary issues in ethics, theory of knowledge, and political philosophy · Expands the range of idealist and phenomenological themes by considering them in the context of gender, postcolonial theory, and environmental concerns, as well as their global reach · Includes new contributions from prominent, international scholars in these fields This Handbook is essential reading for all scholars and advanced students of phenomenology and German Idealism. With chapters on Beauvoir, Sartre, Scheler, Schutz, Stein, and Ricoeur, The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Phenomenology is also ideal for scholars researching these important figures in the history of philosophy.
Book Synopsis Cultural Interactions in the Romantic Age by : Gregory Maertz
Download or read book Cultural Interactions in the Romantic Age written by Gregory Maertz and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-02-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been observed that the reevaluation of Romanticism is a special feature of post-New Critical or revisionist criticism in America. Constituting a lively ecumenical dialogue between literary historians and theorists, and between critics based in comparative literature and national literature departments, the essays in Cultural Interactions in the Romantic Age offer abundant proof that this process continues unabated. Focusing on a broad range of interactive relations from 1750 to 1850, these essays reveal as factitious the national and linguistic borders erected within the Academy and strike a blow against the tendency of literary studies to ossify into arbitrary ethnocentric categories. Cultural Interactions in the Romantic Age makes a strong argument for the position that literary activity in the Romantic Period is inseparable from international dialogue and appropriation. Contributors include April Alliston, Frederick Burwick, Annette Wheeler Cafarelli, James Engell, Lilian R. Furst, David C. Hensley, Roberta Johnson, Marc Katz, Kari Lokke, and John L. Mahoney.
