Book excerpt: Kamryn had a life plan and was successful in almost everything she endeavored to accomplish. Then one day... ' Kamryn awoke in a Horror Chamber!' My name is Kamryn. At least, this is what I believe to be true. We, humans, are the sum of our DNA. It’s all about genetics, family trees, and inherited traits; some of us can gaze into a mirror and see our parents or another family member. Our features, eyes, hair, bone structures, and intelligence are from our direct descendants, uhm, typically. Essentially we are what we were! People are born with genetic disorders, ‘Down syndrome, Diabetes, Spina bifida, Cystic fibrosis, Cancer, Muscular dystrophy, Sickle cell disease, and the list goes on ☹. These disorders most often can be found in our bloodlines and past ancestors. It's not the luck of the draw, in my book. No, it’s a risky gamble when an Evil Egg is fertilized with Sinister Sperm. Does an Angel pop out from the womb? I think not; I am living proof that my relatives were irresponsible. My descendants were the ‘Who’s Who of Evil,’ Serial Killers, Psychopaths, Insanity laden right from the hatchery. Mental disorders that have yet to be labeled. One day I’ll awake from a nap, peer into the mirror, and not be shocked to envision a crowd of deviates ghoulishly staring back at ME, Grinning and Smirking; well, Ugh, Hello There! ☹. Laying on my back, chained and shackled to a gurney, surrounded by concrete walls closing in on me, musing over how my life had imploded in just one singular day. Nah, it wasn’t a tragic automobile accident or catastrophe such as an earthquake, devastating fire, or hurricane, nope. I wasn’t assaulted, nor did I lose a loved one or was robbed, didn’t receive an unsettling diagnosis, or lost a fortune in the stock market or elsewhere.

This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a semi-popular mathematics book aimed at a broad readership of mathematically literate scientists, especially mathematicians and physicists who are not experts in classical mechanics or KAM theory, and scientific-minded readers. Parts of the book should also appeal to less mathematically trained readers with an interest in the history or philosophy of science. The scope of the book is broad: it not only describes KAM theory in some detail, but also presents its historical context (thus showing why it was a “breakthrough”). Also discussed are applications of KAM theory (especially to celestial mechanics and statistical mechanics) and the parts of mathematics and physics in which KAM theory resides (dynamical systems, classical mechanics, and Hamiltonian perturbation theory).Although a number of sources on KAM theory are now available for experts, this book attempts to fill a long-standing gap at a more descriptive level. It stands out very clearly from existing publications on KAM theory because it leads the reader through an accessible account of the theory and places it in its proper context in mathematics, physics, and the history of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephraim Kam observes surprise attack through the eyes of its victim in order to understand the causes of the victim's failure to anticipate the coming of war. Emphasing the psychological aspect of warfare, Kam traces the behavior of the victim at various functional levels and from several points of view in order to examine the difficulties and mistakes that permit a nation to be taken by surprise. He argues that anticipation and prediction of a coming war are more complicated than any other issue of strategic estimation, involving such interdependent factors as analytical contradictions, judgemental biases, organizational obstacles, and political as well as military constraints. Surprise Attack: The Victim's Perspective offers implications based on the intelligence perspective, providing both historical background and scientific analysis that draws from the author's vast experience. The book is of utmost value to all those engaged in intelligence work, and to those whose operational or political responsibility brings them in touch with intelligence assessments and the need to authenticate and then adopt them or discount them. Similarly, the book will interest any reader intrigued by decision-making processes that influence individuals and nations at war, and sometimes even shape national destiny. --Ehud Barak, Former Prime Minister of Israel

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Epigram Books Fiction Prize When a renegade prophet vanishes in a cloud of pigeons in Kuala Lumpur, chorister and first witness Gabriel finds himself press-ganged into a wild road trip down the Malaysian coast. Meanwhile, in a sleepy town by the sea, Lydia traces the links between her late grandaunt’s eccentric lover and her involvement in the Communist Emergency. As Lydia and Gabriel enter a shadowy mythology of serpents, Sufi saints and plainclothes gods, they must grapple with the theologies and histories they once trusted, in a country more perilously punk than they’d ever conceived of. Reader Reviews: "A dizzying tale of saints, heists, maybe-queens." —The Straits Times "Quite the debut, accomplished, deft, unabashed and exuberant." —Asian Review of Books "Author Joshua Kam’s debut book brings Asian mythology to the forefront." —The Sun Daily Malaysian author blurs myths and truths as you escape on a wild road trip ... This whimsical, rollercoaster ride of a book also carries a tale of old and new Malaysia colliding, with various figures from local history, politics and folklore coming together in an epic quest for the soul of the nation. —newsday24.com "In essence, (the novel) acts as a love letter to Malaysian folklore and history, showcasing an impressive degree of representation and imagination that never feels shoehorned into the narrative." —Bakchormeeboy "What a trip! This 21st-century adventure quest with an Islamic saint also brings us on a madcap tour through a multitude of Malaysian mythologies— Malay epics, Taoist pantheons, WW2/Emergency/Merdeka heroics, and more. Even more vitally, it gives us hope amidst the dire news of our era— political corruption, environmental devastation and bigotry—reassuring us that the human/divine spirit still flourishes in the late-capitalist tropics, and is ultimately destined to triumph over evil. An absolute delight, and truly, deliciously Malaysian.” —Ng Yi-Sheng, award-winning author of Lion City “Borgesian, even Manichean in spirit, with almost reverent borrowings from Nusantara mythologies to Abrahamic religiosity, this novel is a wild ride from start to finish, riffing on Malayan history, politics and folklore in a surprisingly redemptive arc, while remaining deeply interrogative about what it means to keep true to goodness in the ever-changing face of evil.” —Cyril Wong, two-time Singapore Literature Prize-winning author of This Side of Heaven

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnocentrism—our tendency to partition the human world into in-groups and out-groups—pervades societies around the world. Surprisingly, though, few scholars have explored its role in political life. Donald Kinder and Cindy Kam fill this gap with Us Against Them, their definitive explanation of how ethnocentrism shapes American public opinion. Arguing that humans are broadly predisposed to ethnocentrism, Kinder and Kam explore its impact on our attitudes toward an array of issues, including the war on terror, humanitarian assistance, immigration, the sanctity of marriage, and the reform of social programs. The authors ground their study in previous theories from a wide range of disciplines, establishing a new framework for understanding what ethnocentrism is and how it becomes politically consequential. They also marshal a vast trove of survey evidence to identify the conditions under which ethnocentrism shapes public opinion. While ethnocentrism is widespread in the United States, the authors demonstrate that its political relevance depends on circumstance. Exploring the implications of these findings for political knowledge, cosmopolitanism, and societies outside the United States, Kinder and Kam add a new dimension to our understanding of how democracy functions.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a surprising fact that so far almost no books have been published on KAM theory. The first part of this book seems to be the first monographic exposition of this subject, despite the fact that the discussion of KAM theory started as early as 1954 (Kolmogorov) and was developed later in 1962 by Arnold and Moser. Today, this mathematical field is very popular and well known among physicists and mathematicians. In the first part of this Ergebnisse-Bericht, Lazutkin succeeds in giving a complete and self-contained exposition of the subject, including a part on Hamiltonian dynamics. The main results concern the existence and persistence of KAM theory, their smooth dependence on the frequency, and the estimate of the measure of the set filled by KAM theory. The second part is devoted to the construction of the semiclassical asymptotics to the eigenfunctions of the generalized Schrödinger operator. The main result is the asymptotic formulae for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, using Maslov`s operator, for the set of eigenvalues of positive density in the set of all eigenvalues. An addendum by Prof. A.I. Shnirelman treats eigenfunctions corresponding to the "chaotic component" of the phase space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part historical drama, part thriller, and part comedy, Tsui Hark's Peking Opera Blues (1986) invites--if not demands--examinations from multiple perspectives. Tan See Kam rises to the challenge in this study by first situating Tsui in a Sinophone context. The diasporic director explores different dimensions of "Chineseness" in the film by depicting competing versions of Chinese nationalism and presenting characters speaking two Chinese languages, Cantonese and Mandarin. In the process he compels viewers to recognize the multiplicities of the Chinese identity and rethink what constitutes cultural Chineseness. The challenge to a single definition of "Chinese" is also embodied by the playful pastiches of diverse materials. In a series of intertextual readings, Tan reveals the full complexity of Peking Opera Blues by placing it at the center of a web of texts consisting of Tsui's earlier film Shanghai Blues (1984), Hong Kong's Mandarin Canto-pop songs, the "three-women" films in Chinese-language cinemas, and of course, traditional Peking opera, whose role-types, makeup, and dress code enrich the meaning of the film. In Tan's portrayal, Tsui Hark is a filmmaker who makes masterly use of postmodernist techniques to address postcolonial concerns. More than a quarter of a century after its release, Tan shows, Peking Opera Blues still reverberates in the present time.
