Book excerpt: Bast and Other Plant Fibres, a title in Woodhead Publishing's series on fibres published in association with The Textile Institute, UK, is the first book in over 50 years to cover the most interesting plant fibres and those with high annual production. Bast fibres have many textile applications, with natural fibre composites being the fastest growing due to the combination of their relatively low cost and excellent technical characteristics.Following the editor's introductory chapter, which includes a comprehensive set of tables comparing the physical and chemical characteristics of the fibres, Chapter 2 discusses jute while Chapters 3 and 4 cover flax and hemp. Subsequent chapters are devoted to ramie, sisal, coir and abaca. Chapter 9 brings together information on minor fibres that may deserve greater interest on the part of international markets, while Chapter 10 is dedicated to the use of bast and leaf fibres in composites. Information is included on production and processing, physical and chemical properties, and on economic, environmental, and health and safety considerations. This book is an essential reference to academics and researchers in agriculture and horticulture as well as those working in textiles, apparel and industrial design, and textile testing and forensic science laboratories. It will also be invaluable to those working in government departments such as agriculture or trade and industry. - Essential discussion on chemical and physical properties of individual natural fibres - Looks at environmental advantages of bast fibres over synthetic fibres - First book of its kind in over 50 years

Book excerpt: Dr. Ratikanta Maiti started his scientific career since 1962 till now (2017) and contributed substantially in multidisciplinary research lines both on basic and applied aspects on plants and crops and has earned international fame. Being borne in a very poor family, he struggled hard against his poverty and obstacle and achieved worldwide fame for his innovative scientific contributions owing to his strong determination, dedication and honesty. This will be a source of motivation to young generations. He published more than 450 research papers and more than 50 books on plants, crops and forest science which will give inspiration to young scientist. He received several international awards to his great satisfaction. He developed an international networker working on bioresource and interacting scientists from 22 countries globally. His purpose of writing this monograph will motivate young scientists about how to achieve success against all obstacles with strong determination and dedication. Besides this extensive review on various plants and most of the crops will help the young scientists to learn various novel simple technologies and research advances on plants and crops. He developed innovative techniques for screening crop cultivars for tolerance to salinity, drought and abiotic stresses. He developed techniques for propagation of wild chilli and cactus spp. In his opinion this will give excellent feed backs on multidisciplinary researches both on plants and crops. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, writing Chronicles of San Quentin was first suggested to Kenneth Lamott during a spell as a teacher at that California prison in the 1950’s. The book not only chronicles the history and highlights of one of America’s most famous penitentiaries, but it also reflects the changes in prisons in the U.S. over the last 100 years. Calmly informing us that there were over 4,000 murders in California between 1849-1855, Lamott quickly justifies the terrible need the state had for prisons other than lax, badly run county and city jails. But San Quentin itself, which started as a floating prison hulk, was little better. Here are its famous prisoners, riots and escapes, its floggings and brutalities, its executions too. With the coming of the “New Era” penology in the 1890’s, the change to more humane and rational treatment of prisoners is shown. The Clinton Duffy era is dealt with at great length—its shortcomings are shown along with its humane virtues—and prison life including the Chessman execution, is portrayed with sympathy and understanding. A highly readable book.
