DEMATTEIS (JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA) and HOWARD PORTER (JLA)! Thanks to Wonder Twins Terry and Teri Magnus, the original JLÕs DNA has been resurrected in 31st-century bodies. Meanwhile, itÕs becoming obvious to everyone except the Justice League that their leader, Ariel Masters, is, in fact, trying to kill them, and old friends from the distant past are making their mysterious reappearances (and having some very mixed feelings about the whole thing). Book Synopsis The Meursault Investigation by : Kamel Daoud
Download or read book The Meursault Investigation written by Kamel Daoud and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2015 “A tour-de-force reimagining of Camus’s The Stranger, from the point of view of the mute Arab victims.” —The New Yorker He was the brother of “the Arab” killed by the infamous Meursault, the antihero of Camus’s classic novel. Seventy years after that event, Harun, who has lived since childhood in the shadow of his sibling’s memory, refuses to let him remain anonymous: he gives his brother a story and a name—Musa—and describes the events that led to Musa’s casual murder on a dazzlingly sunny beach. In a bar in Oran, night after night, he ruminates on his solitude, on his broken heart, on his anger with men desperate for a god, and on his disarray when faced with a country that has so disappointed him. A stranger among his own people, he wants to be granted, finally, the right to die. The Stranger is of course central to Daoud’s story, in which he both endorses and criticizes one of the most famous novels in the world. A worthy complement to its great predecessor, The Meursault Investigation is not only a profound meditation on Arab identity and the disastrous effects of colonialism in Algeria, but also a stunning work of literature in its own right, told in a unique and affecting voice.

Book Synopsis Women offenders by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Justice Committee
Download or read book Women offenders written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Justice Committee and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government plans to introduce payment-by-results in probation services need to be redesigned in respect of women offenders-who are often classified as presenting a lower risk of reoffending-so that they receive the intensive tailored support they need. The Government's strategic priorities for women offenders lack substance and in particular must take a broader approach to supporting women at risk of reoffending and addressing the inter-generational nature of crime. The Committee welcomes the Government's extension of through the gate statutory support to prisoners sentenced to less than 12 months, likely to benefit many women offenders. However, potential providers of rehabilitative services need to recognise that levels of risk posed by women may not reflect the level of support such women require. Although progress has been made since the Corston recommendations, a number of concerns remain: the women's prison population has not fallen sufficiently fast; over half of women offenders continue to receive ineffective short-custodial sentences; mental health and substance misuse treatment which could reduce use of custody remains unavailable to Courts in sufficient volume. Maintaining a network of women's centres and using residential alternatives to custody are likely to be more effective and cheaper in the long run than short custodial sentences. The Committee does not recommend substantive changes to the overall sentencing framework, but argues instead for more emphasis to be placed on ensuring courts are provided with robust alternatives to custody specifically appropriate to women
Book Synopsis Women and Criminal Justice by : Annison, Jill
Download or read book Women and Criminal Justice written by Annison, Jill and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book focuses on developments since the publication in 2007 of the Corston Report into women and criminal justice. While some of its recommendations were accepted by government, actual policy has restricted the scale and scope of change. The challenges of working with women in the current climate of change and uncertainty are also explored, seeking to translate lessons from good practice to policy development and recommending future directions resulting from the coalition government’s Transforming Rehabilitation plans. This timely analysis engages with wide-ranging considerations for policy makers, providers and practitioners of services and interventions for women who offend, and questions whether women should be treated differently in the criminal justice system.
Book Synopsis The Negro Leagues Were Major Leagues by : Todd Peterson
Download or read book The Negro Leagues Were Major Leagues written by Todd Peterson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How good was Negro League Baseball (1920-1948)? Some experts maintain that the quality of play was equal to that of the American and National Leagues. Some believe the Negro Leagues should be part of Major League Baseball's official record and that more Negro League players should be in the Hall of Fame. Skeptics contend that while many players could be rated highly, NL organizations were minor league at best. Drawing on the most comprehensive data available, including stats from more than 2,000 interracial games, this study finds that black baseball was very good indeed. Negro leaguers beat the big leaguers more than half the time in head-to-head contests, demonstrated stronger metrics within their own leagues and excelled when finally allowed into the majors. The authors document the often duplicitous manner in which MLB has dealt with the legacy of the Negro Leagues, and an appendix includes the scores and statistics from every known contest between Negro League and Major League teams.
