The authors trace the evolution of the symbolic role that China and Chineseness play in defining racial, gendered, and class aspects of Chilean national social imaginary. In doing so, they challenge a common idea that Chineseness is a stable signifier and the simplistic perception of the ethnic Chinese as the unassimilable foreigner within the nation. During a period of tremendous political and social strife that saw the election of a Marxist president followed by the terror of a military coup in 1973, a youth-driven, transnationally connected counterculture smashed onto the scene. Contributing to a surging historiography of the era's Latin American counterculture, Barr-Melej draws on media and firsthand interviews in documenting the intertwining of youth and counterculture with discourses rooted in class and party politics. Focusing on "hippismo" and an esoteric movement called Poder Joven, Barr-Melej challenges a number of prevailing assumptions about culture, politics, and the Left under Salvador Allende's "Chilean Road to Socialism." While countercultural attitudes toward recreational drug use, gender roles and sexuality, rock music, and consumerism influenced many youths on the Left, the preponderance of leftist leaders shared a more conservative cultural sensibility. This exposed, Barr-Melej argues, a degree of intergenerational dissonance within leftist ranks. And while the allure of new and heterodox cultural values and practices among young people grew, an array of constituencies from the Left to the Right berated counterculture in national media, speeches, schools, and other settings. This public discourse of contempt ultimately contributed to the fierce repression of nonconformist youth culture following the coup.

Using migration to and within Chile as a case study, the book looks at the experiences of women, who make up a large proportion of migrants within Latin America. Mapping the experiences, aspirations and struggles of women moving to and in Chile, the book exposes the unexpected issues encountered by migrant women in their new destination country, particularly the discrimination that leaves them feeling invisible, unsettled, and, immobile. Within the region there is a long history of feminized migration and domestic labour circuits that spurs migrants’ residential movements but slows their social progress. Yet despite these challenges, the migrant women expressed their agency through the support networks they created among their compatriots and their transnational families. Overall, the book demonstrates the growing migrant populations that exist within the Global South and the impact of domestic and care labour markets in driving gendered migration in particular. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in the fields of mobilities and migration, cultural geography, international development, and gender studies, especially those with an interest in Latin America.
