(OBSOLETE) "In jungle warfare, the soldier often fights two enemies: man and nature. The elimination of nature as an enemy and the use of the jungle itself as an ally are training objectives fully as important as the elimination of the human enemy. The soldier must be trained not to fight the jungle; he must be capable of living successfully in it and making it work for him against the human enemy. Health, hygiene, sanitation, jungle service and operations are detailed, along with appendixes on native plants and use of a machete in the jungle environment.

Book Synopsis Night Jungle Operations by : Major Thomas B. Atkins
Download or read book Night Jungle Operations written by Major Thomas B. Atkins and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the adequacy of current jungle and infantry doctrine in addressing the conduct of night operations in jungle environment. Daytime jungle operations already have much in common with night operations in general due to the limited visibility afforded by the dense vegetation. The degree of difficulty increases dramatically when operating during darkness. Such operations require a thorough understanding of why, when, and how to conduct them. This monograph first examines the night jungle operations conducted during WWII and the Vietnam Conflict to gain a historical perspective of the types of operations conducted in the past as well as their success. It then reviews and analyzes current doctrine for night fighting to determine its applicability to a jungle environment. Next, the monograph contrasts past night jungle operations with current doctrine and concludes that current doctrine does not sufficiently address the conduct of night jungle warfare. Lastly, the monograph offers some recommendations for inclusion to doctrine to address the shortcomings identified.
Book Synopsis The Jungle Survival Manual, 1939–1945 by : Alan Jeffreys
Download or read book The Jungle Survival Manual, 1939–1945 written by Alan Jeffreys and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The army guide that taught WWII soldiers how to survive in the jungles and swamps of the tropics. During the Second World War, Allied soldiers fought to survive not only encounters with the enemy but the landscape they found themselves in. Being posted to Southeast Asia and the Pacific to fight the Japanese meant soldiers had to learn to survive in the tropics, fighting and living in endless steamy jungle and perilous swamps. In this alien environment, men had to be able to take care of themselves rather than relying on their unit to supply their needs, something that did not come naturally to the many soldiers born and raised in cities. To help them, the British and US armies produced a number of official training manuals and guides explaining how to identify and fight the Japanese and avoid their deadly punji traps, as well as “jungle lore”: How to find and cook plants that were safe to eat Which animals and insects could kill them How to identify and treat tropical illnesses and diseases How to avoid the dangers of polluted water and cannibals The Jungle Survival Manual brings together the official manuals and information that enabled the Allies to fight in Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Indochina, Singapore, and the Pacific Islands—and win the war. Includes diagrams and drawings reproduced from the original guides.
Book Synopsis Science and the Pacific War by : Roy M. MacLeod
Download or read book Science and the Pacific War written by Roy M. MacLeod and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-12-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War occasioned many reflections on the place of science and technology in the conflict. That the war ended with Allied victory in the Pacific theatre, inevitably focussed attention upon the Pacific region, and particularly upon the Manhattan project and its outcome. It was in the Pacific that Western physics and engineering gave birth to the Atomic Age. However, the Pacific war had also proved a testing time, and a testing space, for other disciplines and institutions. Extreme environments and opemtional distances, and the fundamental demands of logistics, required the Allies and the Japanese to innovate many scientific and technological practices. Just as medicine and botany were called upon to fight tropical diseases and insect pests, so engineers, anthropol ogists and geographers were called upon to understand local conditions and cli mates, and to work with local peoples whose traditional lives were changed forever by the experience. At the same time, the war played midwife to a host of new de velopments, not least in scientific intelligence and in chemical and biological weapons, which were to acquire far greater importance after 1945.

Download or read book Small Wars Manual written by U. s. Marine Corps and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Marine Corps is the largest such force on the planet, and yet it is the smallest, most elite section of the U.S. military, one with a long and storied history. This classic 1940 official government report, created by the Corps, laid the groundwork for the "small wars" fought by the United States in the post-World War II era, and has been used to strategize the American occupation of Iraq in the early 21st century. What is a small war? What is the nature of operations for such a conflict? What kind of staffing does a small war require? What logistical and training issues need to be taken into account? What is the importance of neutral zones? How do tactics differ in a small war? How should an occupying force disarm a civilian population? and moreMilitary buffs, wargamers, and anyone seeking to understand fundamental military strategy will find this a fascinating and informative document.
