Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of jungles, we often think of a densely forested area with thick foliage; this is what is known as a primary jungle. But jungles can also include swamps, grasslands, and cultivated areas. Primary jungles can fall into the category of either a tropical rain forest or a deciduous forest, depending on the types of trees and plants found growing there. A tropical rain forest is typified by having tall trees whose upper branches interlock to form canopies. Yet of all the environments in which man has to survive, the jungle offers the best chance. The SAS have operated in the jungle for years, sometimes staying in the forest for months at a time. They developed a technique whereby they had two sets of clothing, one for daytime use and one for night. Just before they went to sleep they would change from their wet clothing, which was normally hung under the shelter to dry out. In the morning they would change from their dry clothing and put on the wet. It is an uncomfortable change, but one that guaranteed a good night’s sleep in dry clothing. The SAS Guide to Jungle Survival will teach the reader to come to terms with the jungle environment, understand it, and work with it as opposed to “fighting it.” The jungle forest can provide shelter, food, and water in abundance, and this book will show you how. If the jungle offers any problems, it is with disease and wild animals; The SAS Guide to Jungle Survival will show you how to avoid and resist both and come out alive.

Book excerpt: Jungle Blue tells a sad story about a man whose dreams and his destiny move in opposite directions. Born with unique physical challenges, he endeavours to overcome all the odds against him. He succeeds and becomes one of the greatest in his community. After that he sets himself a new and higher goal. Then something happens that casts a dense cloud over his future. A strange circumstance takes away his hope; or put in a less painful language, his hope and his future are put on hold for at least two years. This narration is a proxy account of Jungle Blue’s life given by his servant who has been deported to London for two years. During the two-year period, his servant will study for a qualification that will enable him to return to, and transform his community of origin. Even though, his servant will return after two years, his absence during that time is going to be difficult for him. While in London, his servant becomes the symbol of his master who epitomises the inhabitants of the community he hails from. Through this deported servant of Jungle Blue, the reader is presented with a description of two sets of people: the servant, his master and the community of origin of the two, as one set; and Londoners and the London community within which the servant proxy now lives, as the second set. This gives the novel a dual setting..... ‘the indigenous community of origin of Hope and his master’ and ‘the new community of London’ which is going to be the deportee’s new place of abode. This dual setting is intended to create the premises for effective comparison between two sets of people from two sets of communities with two systems of civilisation that are here and there interposed, juxtaposed and transposed throughout the various phases of the narration. Names of people and places used in the novel, including those of the indigenous communities and; and, also, including the new London community to which Hope is deported are all fictional. No names and no events in the novel relate to any real people and real situations. Any semblances to any real life situations should therefore be seen as merely coincidental and unintended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie-Claude Smouts looks at the issue of rain forest depletion and global environmental policies. Beginning with how the issue entered the world stage in the 1980s despite alarms over the issue in the 1950s, Tropical Forests, International Jungle explores the complexities of what are tropical forests, what role they play not only in environmentalism but in trade, health care, and almost every facet of natural and social life for those living there and beyond. Although for most in the developed world tropical forests have gained a status of part of our world heritage, these forests are not really part of the global commons or a global public good. Developing nations maintain control over the forests within their borders and often use the forests as they see fit. The international system for mediating the issue is a fractured group of non-governmental organizations and transnational networks, often with competing views of how to manage tropical forests. Despite this seemingly grim picture, Smouts is optimistic. A changing world view toward forest depletion is influencing countries both North and South. Although forests will be used commercially, it is a dynamic process that should maintain them far into the future.

Book excerpt: Ken Ward in the Jungle is an adventure novel by Zane Grey. was an American author known for his popular adventure novels and stories. Excerpt: "Finally the boys met a mozo named Pepe, who had often rowed a boat for George. Pepe looked sadly in need of a job; still he did not ask for it. George said that Pepe had been one of the best boatmen on the river until canya, the fiery white liquor to which the natives were addicted, had ruined his reputation. Pepe wore an old sombrero, a cotton, shirt and sash, and ragged trousers. He was barefooted. Ken noted the set of his muscular neck, his brawny shoulders and arms, and appreciated the years of rowing that had developed them. But Pepe's haggard face, deadened eyes, and listless manner gave Ken pause. Still, Ken reflected, there was never any telling what a man might do, if approached right. Pepe's dejection excited Ken's sympathy. So Ken clapped him on the shoulder, and, with George acting as interpreter, offered Pepe work for several weeks at three pesos a day. That was more than treble the mozo's wage. Pepe nearly fell off the canal bridge, where he was sitting, and a light as warm and bright as sunshine flashed into his face."
