Book excerpt: Noble born, Julian Marino turned his back on the only life he has ever known to search for a lost friend he has always cared about and never forgotten. Groomed to take his place as an Elder, his father's ambitions, not his own, Julian set out to reinvent himself. Learning to fight, to hunt, to track has been very successful for him, but not in his many year quests to find his best friend. Feeling defeated, Julian goes to the one and only home he still has left and discovers new problems within his race as well as a new war brewing.Serina Ferrari was born a bloodmate. She is destined to be mated with a vampire and will suffer greatly if not. Her system isn't designed for a human life. Her body functions only for a vampire, and without enough nutrition as well as feedings from a vampire, she will die. Her father refuses to accept this fate. He thinks he can cure her and is blind to the suffering she goes through. He takes vampires and even Elders with the hope of finding the cure needed for his daughter. Has no care with how many lives he takes either or how they die. He only wants to save his daughter and kill as many vampires as he can. But when he ends up taking Julian all bets are off and the war that had been brewing starts, not to mention there's a Guardian tagging along right behind Julian--a legendary protector to the vampire race, and very deadly when crossed. Now the battle is on, but who comes out a victor, or a victim?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Thousand Miles of Dreams is an evocative and intimate biography of two Chinese sisters who took very different paths in their quests to be independent women. Ling Shuhao arrived in Cleveland in 1925 to study medicine in the middle of a U.S. crackdown on Chinese immigrant communities, and her effort to assimilate began. She became an American named Amy, while her sister Ling Shuhua burst onto the Beijing literary scene as a writer of short fiction. Shuhua's tumultuous affair with Virginia Woolf's nephew during his years in China eventually drew her into the orbit of the Bloomsbury group. The sisters were Chinese "modern girls" who sought to forge their own way in an era of social revolution that unsettled relations between men and women and among nations. Daughters of an imperial scholar-official and a concubine, they followed trajectories unimaginable to their parents' generation. Biographer Sasha Su-Ling Welland stumbled across their remarkable stories while recording her grandmother's oral history. She discovered the secret Amy had jealously hidden from family in the United States—her sister's fame as a Chinese woman writer—as well as intriguing discrepancies between the sisters' versions of the past. Shaped by the social history of their day, the journeys of these extraordinary women spanned the twentieth century and three continents in a saga of East-West cultural exchange and personal struggle. On this cover, Ive placed a framed picture of my husband as he was in life, with the words They didnt listen, they didnt know how, indicating from where he is right now, he can see a bigger picture. I say framed because there is evidence indicating he was a diabetic, but in fact, he was suffering from something else. The back cover has a selection of photographs of him enjoying life against a background of honeycomb with the inscription Life became too sweet for me. I invite you to read on with an open mind!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early modern Britain, the primary medium of free comment was the clandestine satire, circulated either orally or in manuscript. Part of the national political culture from Jacobean times, satire reached its greatest influence following the Restoration of Charles II, when a new 'easy' style, combining courtly polish with demotic frankness and flagrant indecency, led to the composition of thousands of such poems. Most of the poets of the time, including such major talents as Marvell and Rochester, wrote in the genre, though nearly always anonymously. While its chief targets were political, much Restoration satire concerned itself with the emerging demography of 'Town' and its uncertain experimentation with new kinds of social freedom. Attacks on the sexual misbehaviour (real or imagined) of aristocratic women hover, equally uncertainly, between moral condemnation and ill-disguised envy, while also conferring an inverse celebrity status on their victims. In this paradoxical social world, not to be lampooned could mean that one was no longer a person of importance. In the first comprehensive survey of this vast field, Harold Love considers the relationship of the lampoon to gossip, how one might construct a poetics of the genre, and how clandestine satire reached and was received by its readers. Constructing three primary categories of 'court', 'Town' and 'state' lampooning, Love argues that far from being the product of isolated disaffection, most satire was the work of a circle of recognized poets, frequently operating in collaboration. An extensive first-line index to the principal manuscript sources for clandestine satire makes this book an open sesame to further exploration of its fascinating field.
