Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judgment in Literature In nearly all large towns, and especially in the capital cities of civilized nations, there are collections of statues, pictures, and books. Even in the streets we see the forms of men and women, wrought in marble or cast in bronze, placed high upon pedestals to meet the gaze of every one who may pass by them. In nearly every house there are pictures upon the walls, and vases or other ornaments arranged upon shelves, and books lying on the table; and in large houses there are whole chambers set apart solely for collections of pictures and statuary, or lined with rows of books. The mere existence of these objects shows us that Art is an element in the life of civilized man, for we should not care to surround ourselves with such things, unless we wished our minds to be sometimes occupied both with them and with the thoughts which they suggest. Criticism is the exercise of judgment in the province of Art and Literature, and the Critic is a person who is possessed of the knowledge necessary to enable him to pronounce right judgments upon the merit or worth of such works as come within this province. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Judgment Books: A Story At a corner of the lawn, lying full length on a wicker sofa beneath the shade of the trees, lay Jack Armitage, also irresponsibly drowsy. He would have said he was meditating. Being-an artist, he conceded to himself the right to meditate as often and as long as he pleased, but just now his meditations were entirely confined to vague thoughts that it was tea-time; and that, on the whole, he would not. Have another pipe; so he thrust his hands into his coat pockets and only thought about tea. Perhaps the familiar and still warm bowl of his favorite brierwood was re sponsible for his change of intention; in any case, it is certain that he drew it out and began to fill it with the care ful precision of those who know that the good gift of tobacco is squanderedif it is bestowed aimlessly or carelessly into its censer. Book excerpt: Paths of Judgement by Anne Douglas Sedgwick This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judgment: A Play in Two Acts Judgment is founded on a story told me by a man who knew Peg Straw, and who was present at her wake. The only points in which the play differs from his story are that I have omitted a miracle which, the storyteller informed me, happened on the second night of the wake (it was noticed that although the candles lighted about the corpse had been burning for forty-eight hours they were not perceptibly shortened), and I have added the loom and the birth interest as symbols of Destiny and of the wonder and persistent newness of human life. All events, says Marcus Aurelius, turn out justly. If you look closely, you will not only see a connection between causes and effects, but a sovereign distribution of justice, which broods in the administration, and gives everything its due. Then from the fringe of night sprang young life and met this forlorn procession. A tall girl appeared and three collie dogs ga110ped and circled about her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Judgment of Charis Swiftly behind her came a thin, active girl who carried an attaché case, and ran downstairs as though she had a train to catch. Coming within sight of the hall clock, she hastened yet the more, seeing neither the plethoric little dog nor the link between him and the ponderous lady. She caught her foot, there was a mingled cry, yelp and shriek, and the girl fell the whole length of the stairs, alighting almost at the feet of the man with the Spectator. He was prompt in hurrying to the rescue. The hall became full of excited people running about. The bulky owner of the dog had most wisely seated herself when the shock came. Its impact broke her bracelet, and the little cur was hurled, like the girl, to the bottom of the stairs. Lady Portwine made such outcry that at first she was thought to be her self injured. Moreover, she was covered with furs and diamonds, and looked important. The girl was evidently nobody. She wore a blue serge suit and a little hat to match. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vision of Judgement It hath been wisely said, that "One fool makes many;" and it hath been poetically observed, "That fools rush in, where angels fear to tread !" If Mr. Southey had not rushed in where he had no business, and where he never was before, and never will be again, the following poem would not have been written. Is it not impossible that it may be as good as his own, seeing that it cannot, by any species of stupidity, natural or acquired, be worse. The gross flattery, the dull impudence, the renegado intolerance, and impious cant of the poem by the author of Wat Tyler, are something so stupendous, as to form the sublime of himself - containing the quintessence of his own attributes. So much for his poem - a word or two on his preface. (a) In this preface it has pleased the magnanimous Laureate to draw the picture of a supposed "Satanic School," the which he doth recommend to the notice of the legislature, thereby adding to his other laurels the ambition of those of an informer. If there exists any where, excepting in his imagination, such a school, is he not sufficiently armed against it by his own intense vanity? The truth is, that there are certain writers whom Mr. S. imagines, like Scrub, to have "talked of him; for they laughed consumedly." I think I know enough of most of the writers to whom he is supposed to allude, to assert, that they, in their individual capacities, have done more good in the charities of life to their fellow creatures in any one year, than Mr. Southey has done harm to himself by his absurdities in his whole life; and this is saying a great deal. But I have a few questions to ask. 1st. Is Mr. Southey the author of Wat Tyler? 2ndly. Was he not refused a remedy at law by the highest judge of his beloved England, because it was a blasphemous and seditious publication? (b) 3rdly. Was he not entitled by William Smith, in full parliament, "a rancorous renegado?" (c) 4thly. Is he not poet laureate, with his own lines on Martin the regicide, staring him in the face? (d) And, 5thly. Putting the four preceding items together, with what conscience dare he call the attention of the laws to the publications of others, be they what they may? I say nothing of the cowardice of such a proceeding; its meanness speaks for itself, but I wish to touch upon the motive, which is neither more nor less, than that Mr. S. has been laughed at a little in some recent publications, as he was of yore in the "Antijacobin" by his present patrons. Hence all this "skimble scamble stuff" about "Satanic" and so forth. However, it is worthy of him - "Qualis A B Incepto." If there is anything obnoxious to the political opinions of a portion of the public, in the following poem, they may thank Mr. Southey. He might have written hexameters, as he has written everything else, for aught that the writer cared, had they been upon another subject. But to attempt to canonize a monarch, who, whatever were his household virtues, was neither a successful nor a patriot king inasmuch, as several years of his reign passed in war with America and Irelaud, to say nothing of the aggression upon France, - like all other exaggeration, necessarily begets opposition. In whatever manner he may be spoken of in this new "Vision," his public career will not be more favourably transmitted by history. Of his private virtues (although a little expensive to the nation) there can be no doubt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Own Lives: The Brook of Judgment It can be nothing new to thoughtful readers, that good and evil are subject to law; that their results are in scribed ou the lives of those in whom they find a home 5 or that judgment over all the Spheres they occupy is administered by Christ. The laws of retribution are old acquaintances of our race and the deepest thoughts we are likely to have regarding them have probably been reached and expressed thousands of years ago. But this does not affect the duty of studying these laws. This cannot grow old. And we may gain a certain freshness of view and impression by looking at old facts through new mediums, especially if the mediums be as suggestive and true as the books of judgment.' For the suggestion, and a portion of the proof, that the sealed book' is a book of judgment, I am indebted to Hengstenberg. What has been said by other writers, in elucidation of 'the books' (part Fourth), I have already indicated in this Preface, and in the fullest way exhibited in the concluding chapters of the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary and Social Judgments, Vol. 2 IT is a very difficult question to decide at what distance of time after a great man's death his biography should be given to the world. If it is put forth at once, as interest and affection would naturally dictate, while the world is yet ringing with his fame and his friends yet grieving for his loss, when every one is eager to know more Of a man of whom they had heard so much, the sentiments it excites will be more vivid, and the treatment it receives will be more gentle it will be read more widely, and handled more tenderly; enmity will be silenced and criticism softened by the recency and the sadness of the severance. But, on the other hand, much must be sacrificed for the sake of those advantages. If the deceased has been a statesman, considerations of political propriety compel silence, or only half disclosures, in reference to transac tions which perhaps more than most others would throw light upon his character; his reasons for what he did himself, and his judgments of what was.
