Book excerpt: “Bill Brison’s book on Judas brings to bear on this deepest enigma of the New Testament story both a sharp academic skill and a bold imagination. He makes us read the texts in a fresh and very challenging way – not simply induging in easy iconoclasm but obliging us to ask questions we never thought of so as to come closer to the historic heart of the faith. It deserves to be widely read and pondered, and I hope it will have the attentive readership it merits”. Rowan Williams while Archbishop of Canterbury “While not necessarily agreeing with the conclusions of your study, they deserve publication and should stimulate the thinking of any who are interested in the authorship the Gospel of St. John”. Stuart Blanch while Archbishop of York “I am deeply touched by your beautiful thought about Our Lord’s forgiveness of Judas and about the community’s forgiveness of him” Rev. Canon Charles Moule, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University “You will run into great opposition from the left, especially the liberal flank of New Testament scholars. The conservatives will welcome your careful handling of the text” The Rev. Dr. Brevard Childs, Professor of Old Testament at Yale University “I am surprised at the venom with which publishers responded to the manuscript. Judas seems to strike a raw nerve in the corporate consciousness” Dr. Matthew Melko, Professor of Peace Studies “Brilliant” Editor, Religious Studies

Book excerpt: My father and paternal grandfather were both ministers; when I was very young, I spent a lot of time listening to them and others discussing the Scriptures. Judas's name would come up, and I could not understand why Judas would betray Jesus for any amount of money and why so many people viewed him as a villain. Judas must have known he would have been put to death by many of Jesus's followers who loved him very much. As time went by and I was reading the Bible on my own, I discovered that Judas was Jesus's friend and was only doing what Jesus asked him to do. This book, A Lesson in Faith, was written to emphasize the utmost importance of having faith in what Jesus said. On numerous occasions, the priest, scribes, and elders consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety and kill him, so there was really no reason for betrayal (Matt. 26:3, 4). I think the reason for the betrayal in the beginning was to give all twelve of the apostles a chance to have enough faith in Jesus to give their lives as they said they would (Matt. 26:35). Only Judas had enough faith to give his life by hanging himself. Then the other eleven apostles forsook him and fled; they did not have faith in what Jesus said to them, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall loose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it" (Luke 9:23""24). The eleven apostles lost their life in the end, but with Jesus's help, Judas's life was saved. Therefore, Judas must be the disciple whom Jesus loved! A very good source for more information on the relationship between Jesus and Judas can be found in the book, THE LOST GOSPEL by Herbert Krosney.

Book excerpt: The 2024 Bloomsbury Lent Book invites you on a six-week journey in the company of the 'beloved disciple' as found in the narrative of the Gospel of St John. As the only disciple to have stayed close to Jesus at every stage from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion at Calvary, this eagle-eyed eyewitness intentionally records certain subtle details and signs which, when perceived with the eyes of faith, indicate a deeper and far lasting significance. Michael Marshall explores what these signs are and how, with prayerful reflection, they draw us ever more deeply into the personal, eternal and cosmic significance and awareness of all that Christ accomplished by his death and resurrection – the Paschal Mystery. Ideal for both individual use and for small group study, Lent with the Beloved Disciple takes us into the heart of that Paschal Mystery, by which all things in heaven and earth are ultimately fulfilled in the risen and ascended Christ, who is 'all in all'.

Book excerpt: Volume 1 of the book will discuss the true gospel of Jesus(as), which is about the imminent coming of the Son of Man and the establishment of the universal kingdom of God on earth. We will emphasize the fact that the entire ministry of Jesus(as) is all about the good news of the imminent fulfillment of the ‘Son of Man’ prophecy and the ‘Kingdom of God’ prophecy of Prophet Daniel(as) as written in the Bible. Based on the correct context and interpretation, the “Son of Man” mentioned by Jesus(as) refers to Prophet Muhammad(saw) and the “kingdom of God” refers to Islam. Volume 2 will discuss about the fulfillment of the Seventy Weeks prophecy of Prophet Daniel(as). This prophecy is actually a countdown to know the year Jesus(as) and Muhammad(saw) will come on earth. Jesus(as) is expected to arrive in the sixty-ninth week of the countdown, and Prophet Muhammad(saw) will arrive in the seventieth week of the countdown. Its exact fulfillment in history (such as the year of their birth, the starting year of their ministry and the year their messianic mission will be accomplished) is a miracle or sign from God Almighty (Qur’an 20:133) and a clear evidence (Qur’an 61:6) attesting the veracity of the prophethood of both Jesus(as) and Muhammad(saw). This will explain to us why there were Jews in Judea who knew what time or year Jesus(as) will arrive on earth; and why there were Jews in Yathrib Arabia who knew what time or year Muhammad(saw) will emerge as Messenger of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Metzger calls the Westcott-Hort text "The most noteworthy critical edition of the Greek Testament ever produced by British scholarship." In their monumental critical edition of "The New Testament in the Original Greek," Cambridge professors B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort established the Greek text that has become the essential basis for nearly all subsequent editions and English translations. Through their groundbreaking reconstruction of New Testament textual history and their rigorous reexamination of the manuscript evidence, Westcott and Hort inaugurated a new era of textual study that has set the stage for all subsequent work. Beyond preserving the landmark text, this new edition offers students and scholars alike a handy and affordable Greek Testament for day-to-day use that includes English headings, synoptic parallels, and complete references to Old Testament quotations. This edition also includes a revision and expansion of Alexander Souter's "A Pocket Lexicon of the Greek New Testament." Long a favorite among biblical scholars, Souter's "Pocket Lexicon" offers concise yet clear English definitions and helpful grammatical information on every Greek word used in the New Testament. A Foreword by renowned New Testament textual scholar, Dr. Eldon J. Epp, sets the Westcott-Hort text in historical perspective for contemporary readers. FEATURES - Detailed apparatus comparing the Westcott/Hort text with differences in the 27th edition of Nestle/Aland and Robinson/Pierpont Byzantine editions - Complete references to Old Testament citations and synoptic gospel parallels - English section headings for easy navigation - Revised and expanded Souter Greek dictionary - Bible maps

Book excerpt: Judas Iscariot has been demonized as the quintessential traitor, the disciple who betrayed his master for the infamous thirty pieces of silver. But the recent sensational discovery and publication of the long lost Gospel of Judas, with its remarkable portrayal of Judas Iscariot as the disciple closest to Jesus, raises serious new questions. Was Judas the only member of the Twelve who truly understood Jesus? Did Jesus secretly collaborate with Judas to set in motion the series of events that would redeem all of humankind? In search of answers, Marvin Meyer, one of the world's leading experts on the Gospel of Judas presents a collection of the earliest accounts of Judas, which together paint a fuller portrait of this most enigmatic disciple. This book presents the essential texts that deal with the figure of Judas, including New Testament writings, Gnostic documents, and other early and later Christian literature. These are the earliest known testimonies about Judas and include selections from the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, the Acts of the Apostles, and relevant passages from Paul. The centerpiece of the book is the Gospel of Judas, followed by excerpts from three other Gnostic texts—the Dialogue of the Savior, the Concept of Our Great Power, and the "Round Dance of the Cross"—which may shed new light on the figure of Judas. A series of additional writings on Judas produced over the centuries provide glimpses of the vilification of Judas and the emergence of anti-Semitic themes. Meyer offers evidence of traitors before Judas—the Genesis story of Joseph's brothers who sold him into slavery, the duplicitous friend of the poet in Psalm 41, and Melanthius the goatherd in Homer's Odyssey—all of which raise the question of whether the story of Judas Iscariot could be simply a piece of religious fiction derived from earlier stories. Judas provides a rich collection of original sources that tell the story of Christianity's most infamous figure, offering the fullest understanding of Judas Iscariot's undeniable importance in the climax of Jesus's life.

Book excerpt: "This study in Johannine ecclesiology reconstructs the history of one Christian community in the first century -- a community whose life from its inception to its last hour is reflected in the Gospel and Epistles of John. It was a community that struggled with the world, with the Jews, and with other Christians. Eventually the struggle spread even to its own ranks. It was, in short, a community not unlike the Church of today. This book offers a different view of the traditional Johannine eagle. In the Gospel the eagle soars above the earth, but with talons bared for the fray. In the Epistles we discover the eaglets tearing at each other for possession of the nest" -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.
