Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life Thus much in reply to the possible charge that I have given a mere anthology, - that I have provided a collection of elegant extracts at the cost of ignoring the less attrac tive teachings. I have certainly made many quotations, especially in the section on Ethics. But I have done so intentionally. My aim has been to give some idea of the nobility of thought which characterises the Jewish doctrine of post-biblical times. The passages I have cited are but specimens of the vast moral and spiritual wealth to be found in the Talmudic and medieval literatures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life The view of Judaism set forth in the following pages is one likely, I believe, to commend itself to a large number of English-speaking Jews. It lies midway between the orthodoxy which regards the Shulchan Aruch, or at least the Talmud, as the final authority in Judaism, and the extreme liberalism which, setting little store by the historic sentiment as a factor of the Jewish consciousness, would lightly cut the religion loose from the bonds of Tradition. The present volume, then, may fairly lay claim to novelty. Almost all the expositions of Judaism which have hitherto appeared in England have been written from the rigidly conservative standpoint. Of these the two handbooks of my much-respected teacher Dr. M. Friedlander, are notable examples. Something, though far less, has been done to familiarise the public with the conception of Judaism which stands at the other extreme. It has found an able champion in my friend Mr. C. G. Montefiore, whose essay, entitled Liberal Judaism, was published almost on the very day that this book was finished. Book excerpt: Judaism is primarily a religion of actions rather than beliefs. When the Jewish people accepted God's covenant, they committed themselves first to obedience and practice, and then to striving to understand the message implicit in the Torah. In Understanding Judaism: The Basics of Deed and Creed, a perfect textbook for independent and classroom study, Rabbi Benjamin Blech presents a comprehensive explication of the Jewish faith. What does it meant to be a Jew? How does religion affect the ways in which Jewish people think and act? What are the basic concepts of Judaism? This volume answers these vital questions.

Book excerpt: If you have ever wondered what being born Jewish should mean to you; if you want to find out more about the nature of Judaism, or explain it to a friend; if you are thinking about how Judaism can connect with the rest of your life -- this is the first book you should own. It poses, and thoughtfully addresses, questions like these: Can one doubt God's existence and still be a good Jew? Why do we need organized religion? Why shouldn't I intermarry? What is the reason for dietary laws? How do I start practicing Judaism? The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism was written for the educated, skeptical, searching Jew, and for the non-Jew who wants to understand the meaning of Judaism. It has become a classic and very widely read introduction to the oldest living religion. Concisely and engagingly, authors Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin present Judaism as the rational, moral alternative for contemporary man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sect, Creed and Custom in Judaism: A Study in Jewish Nomology It is with truth as it is with trees. The part that stands in the ground is a solid unit - the truth; but the part which deals with the sun, and therefore has in it the principle of life, is forever branching and branching. . . . But does it injure the tree? Does the fruit grow on the twigs, or on the solid part? You know that it is found not on the unit, but on the diverging twigs. The power of the fruit lies in diversity and not in unity. In great basilar developments unity, in higher elements, ramification. - Beecher. Their organic law containing elements of their polity, though given by God Himself, was yet required to be solemnly ratified by the whole people. This was done on Ebal and Gerizim and is perhaps the first, as it is certainly the grandest constitutional convention ever held among men. Download or read book Judaism as a Civilization written by Mordecai M. Kaplan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as a Civilization: Toward a Reconstruction of American-Jewish Life "Judaism' and 'Jewish religion' arc not synonymous terms. 'Judaism' is more comprehensive than 'Jewish religion,' for 'Jewish religion' is only a part of 'Judaism.' Judaism is the composite of the collected thoughts, sentiments and efforts of the Jewish people. In other words, Judaism is the sum total of all the manifestations of the distinctively Jewish national spirit. "The Jewish religion is, then, only a part of Judaism, though by far its most important part. Among no other people on earth has religion occupied so large, so significant a place in their spiritual life as it has among the Jews. But besides religion there were, and still are, other elements in Judaism." (Bernard Felsenthal, in Teacher in Israel, by Emma Felsenthal, New York, 1924, p. 212.) "It was a fatal mistake of the period of emancipation, a mistake which is the real source of all the subsequent disasters in modern Jewish life, that, in order to facilitate the fight for political equality, Judaism was put forward not as a culture, as the full expression of the inner life of the Jewish people, but as a creed, as the summary of a few abstract articles of faith, similar in character to the religion of the surrounding nations." (Israel Friedlaender, in Past and Present, Ark Pub. Co., Cincinnati, 1919, p. 267.) "Is the trend toward placing less emphasis on Judaism as a cult and more emphasis on Judaism as a civilization, i.e., identifying it with all the activities and relations of life?" (From a questionnaire submitted in 1925 to members of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.) Replies North South West Total Cult 3 8 4 15 Civilization 20 12 18 50 (Yearbook, C. C. A.
