Book excerpt: The long-awaited follow-up to The Second Footman (ISBN: 9781780883656) A modern take on the nineteenth-century novel, set in 1880s’ France and full of period detail and atmosphere. Who is Max Fabien? Is he the loyal secretary and faithful lover of the marquis de Miremont? Or a handsome but unscrupulous trickster, who regards lying as an accomplishment and any sexual quarry as fair game? Miremont’s heart says one thing, his jealousy another. But his obsessive passion for the boy must remain a dark secret—no easy task when his estranged wife and their younger daughter arrive in Paris for a prolonged visit. Soon the strain begins to tell. The Hôtel de Miremont becomes a hive of gossip, mistrust, intrigue and deceit, and Miremont is faced with an impossible choice. Meanwhile the grim secrets of Max’s past continue to haunt him. Has the time come for him to claim his not-so-rightful destiny? That Deplorable Boy is the second book of the Miremont trilogy, charting the course of a gay love affair between an aristocrat and a former servant in late 19th-century France. Rich in period detail and set in the grand châteaux of Paris and Burgundy, the novels explore the suffocating social codes of the time and the conflicts and dangers they bring for those who must live outside them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sam Selvon, a contemporary writer of major importance, is well known to British and Caribbean readers, but his work -- including ten novels -- has not attained the prominence it deserves internationally. This study is a literary analysis of Selvon's use of Trinidad Creole English as an important component of his style and method of fictional composition. Wyke follows the development of Selvon's writing from his early to his late career, starting with his first novel, A Brighter Sun (1952), continuing with The Lonely Londoners (1956) and the short stories Ways of Sunlight (1957), and devoting a large part of the book to Selvon's middle and later years, focusing on such novels as I Hear Thunder (1963), The Housing Lark (1965), and Those Who Eat the Cascadura (1972). He finishes with the last two works of Selvon's trilogy, Moses Ascending (1975) and Moses Migrating (1983).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen year-old Max is the duchesse de Claireville's second footman, but he does not intend to endure the indignities of service for long. He has a plan—to find an aristocratic patron who will become his unwitting accomplice in an audacious fraud. It is true that in 1880s' France, despite nearly a century of revolution and social turmoil, the aristocracy is still firmly entrenched in privilege, and the gulf between the salon and the servants' hall is as wide as ever. But Max is handsome, quick to learn and confident of his abilities as a seducer of both men and women.Whether ladling soup into noble plates beneath crystal chandeliers, or reading biographies of the great generals in his squalid footman's dormitory, he is planning his strategy. He, Max, is the man of the future - ruthless, above morality and sentimental attachments.Yet, when, after a couple of false starts, he at last acquires his patron, he finds himself ambushed by instinctive longings—for friendship, for affection—that threaten his grand plan. 'Be true to yourself…' the saying goes. But to which self? And what is 'truth'?

Book excerpt: Focusing on two film traditions not normally studied together, Maria Pramaggiore examines more than two dozen Irish and African American films, including Do the Right Thing, In the Name of the Father, The Crying Game, Boyz N the Hood, The Snapper, and He Got Game, arguing that these films foreground practices of character identification that complicate essentialist notions of national and racial identity. The porous sense of self associated with moments of identification in these films offers a cinematic counterpart to W. E. B. Du Bois's potent concept of double consciousness, an epistemological standpoint derived from experiences of colonization, racialization, and cultural disruption. Characters in these films, Pramaggiore suggests, reject the national paradigm of insider and outsider in favor of diasporic both/and notions of self, thereby endorsing the postmodern concept of identity as performance.

Both worked in Brooklyn and became casually acquainted until they vacationed at his family's modest cottage in rural Grenada. Though mesmerized by everything Grenadian, his guest experienced disquieting cultural shocks. Every experience, pleasant and unpleasant, she diligently recorded including details of their slow moving island-style romance. Driven to socially construct her multicultural family tree, their American-born granddaughter visited Grenada sixty years later. The flamboyant social life, intimacy and intense spicy aura captivated her and like her grandmother she too was inescapably "Caribbeanized."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary connections between German directors and Hollywood and their implications for German, American, and transnational film. The film histories of Germany and the United States have long been seen as intertwined, but scholarship has focused on émigré works of the 1930s and 1940s, on links between Weimar film and American film noir, and on the conflictedrelationship between directors of the New German Cinema and Hollywood. Recently, German film studies has begun reexamining the interconnection of the two film cultures and focusing on the internationalism of German cinema, but little research has been done on contemporary German directors'' involvement in American cinema, a gap in scholarship that this book fills. The study offers ways of understanding current German cinematic engagement with America and different directorial responses to the hegemonic pressures of Hollywood. It delineates the historical trajectory of German-American film relations in the 20th century, then analyzes the careers and works of four German-born directors who have significant ties with American cinema: Wolfgang Petersen, Roland Emmerich, Percy Adlon, and Tom Tykwer. A series of close readings of their productions isolates the cinematic practices and strategies with which these filmmakers negotiate the different national cultural and cinematic paradigms they traverse. The book analyzes constructions of national cultural identity, probes the boundaries of national cinemas, and expands our understanding ofemerging hybrid film cultures. It is a contribution to German film studies and to the emerging field of transnational film studies.
