Book excerpt: Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence Finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award A Publishers Weekly Holiday Guide History Pick “A book so gripping it can scarcely be put down.... Superb.” —New York Times Book Review "WESTWARD HO! FOR OREGON AND CALIFORNIA!" In the eerily warm spring of 1846, George Donner placed this advertisement in a local newspaper as he and a restless caravan prepared for what they hoped would be the most rewarding journey of a lifetime. But in eagerly pursuing what would a century later become known as the "American dream," this optimistic-yet-motley crew of emigrants was met with a chilling nightmare; in the following months, their jingoistic excitement would be replaced by desperate cries for help that would fall silent in the deadly snow-covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada. We know these early pioneers as the Donner Party, a name that has elicited horror since the late 1840s. With The Best Land Under Heaven, Wallis has penned what critics agree is “destined to become the standard account” (Washington Post) of the notorious saga. Cutting through 160 years of myth-making, the “expert storyteller” (True West) compellingly recounts how the unlikely band of early pioneers met their fate. Interweaving information from hundreds of newly uncovered documents, Wallis illuminates how a combination of greed and recklessness led to one of America’s most calamitous and sensationalized catastrophes. The result is a “fascinating, horrifying, and inspiring” (Oklahoman) examination of the darkest side of Manifest Destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During an operation thirty years ago I had a near-death experience when my Soul "body" travelled to the lands of Heaven where I met God the Gentle who loves us all unconditionally and learned about Heaven and the Beings that reside there. I was shown the relationship between our bodies and Souls and how our Souls can guide us to a more contented and productive life if we listen to it. Our Soul is on an extraordinary journey between its lives on Earth and the life in Heaven. Many people experience NDEs but when I recovered I continued to travel to and from Heaven in my Soul mind. I describe the symbiotic relationship between our bodies and our Souls and how our Soul tries to guide and protect us but has no control over our bodies. It has taken me thirty years to write this book as I continued to travel to and from the lands of Heaven in my Soul "mind." During this time I met and spoke with God the Gentle, the Angels, my ancestors and Beings from other Planets. I discuss the Angel Mona, my teacher during my subsequent visits to Heaven, where I learned about the true meaning and purpose of our lives on Earth and shown how to live a more contented and fulfilling life. I discuss the concept of free will and explain that God has allowed us to live freely and is not responsible for anything negative that happens to us. I describe my Guardian Angel Ban who has remained with me to guide me through this life. Earth is part of the lands of Heaven but Heaven contains many lands where our ancestors and other peoples from other Planets live. I was shown these Planets and their civilisations. Some are like humans but there are other fascinating Beings living in lands where mankind may eventually reside if we succeed in destroying the Earth. That is described in the sequel "Journeys to Other Planets." I was shown that Heaven is a place of education through various levels of learning not punishment, where we continue to evolve into a state of perfection by the Soul's constant reincarnation. These places of learning exist in a different dimension and include the "Waiting Rooms, Manna Factory and the Train Journey to the outer echelons of Heaven." After my death experience, I found that my psychic abilities had increased and in my mortal body my mind was able to foretell the future, speak to the deceased and give healing messages to the living. I also describe my physical and sexual abuse after my mother died when I was six and which continued with my stepmother until I left home. During my journeys to Heaven, I was given the choice to punish or educate my stepmother when she died. I was also allowed to see how she reincarnated into a new life and what she had to learn in that new life. I also detail my sexual abuse from priests and how that affected my life and impacted on my religious beliefs. I discovered the connection between the God I met when I died and Jesus and how we all need some form of spiritual enlightenment and guidance to help us to understand the meaning of our lives and that each of us has to overcome particular challenges in this lifetime. I also discuss how I met Jesus and Mary in Medjugorje. My body, Mary, tells her story and my Soul tells its story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 28, 2006, as he lay in his hospital bed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, visions of celestial beauty were the last thing on Marv Besteman's mind. He had just had surgery to remove a rare pancreatic tumor. It was after visiting hours and his family had left for the day. Alone and racked with pain, Marv tossed and turned, wanting more than anything else to simply sleep and escape the misery and discomfort for a while. The retired banker, father, and grandfather had no idea he was about to get a short reprieve in the form of an experience he never could have imagined. In My Journey to Heaven, Marv Bestman shares the story of his experience of heaven with astounding detail. Readers will hear of his encounters with angels who accompanied him to the gate, his conversation (argument, really) with St. Peter, and his recognition of friends and family members who touched his life. His story offers peace, comfort, and encouragement to those who have lost loved ones and gives security and solace to those who are grieving, dying, or wonder about the afterlife. Marv believed God sent him back to earth to fulfill this mission of comfort and reminds readers that God has work for each of us to do before he calls us to be with him in heaven. Secure in his belief that his book was the fulfillment of his own mission, Marv returned to heaven in January 2012.

How he gives himself into the power of the creature and lets her do that which she wants with him. Difference that passes between one who lives in him and between one who is resigned. I am always between the arms of the divine Fiat, and, oh, how I feel the need of his life, that breathes, beats, circulates in my poor soul! Without him I feel that all dies for me, the light dies, sanctity, strength, even heaven itself, as if it might not belong to me anymore. Instead as I feel his life, all rearises in me. The light re-arises with its beauty that vivifies, purifies and sanctifies. My own Jesus re-arises with all his works. Heaven re-arises which the holy Volition encloses within my soul as within a sanctuary in order to make it all mine. So that if I live in his Will everything is mine and nothing should be missing for me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Chinese mysticism vanish after its first appearance in ancient Taoist philosophy, to surface only after a thousand years had passed, when the Chinese had adapted Buddhism to their own culture? This first integrated survey of the mystical dimension of Taoism disputes the commonly accepted idea of such a hiatus. Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.
