Book excerpt: Journeying with Hope into a New Year: Reflections for Advent and Christmas originated in 1982 when our family lived at Tantur, an ecumenical institute between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. My wife Nancy and I sent family and friends a letter highlighting our experience of Christmastide in the Holy Land. Inspired by writing this message from afar, we continue each year to write a letter with family news, a moving quote from a hymn or literary work, and spiritual reflections. These provide the basis for thirty-one meditations to be read daily through the month of December. Each includes a biblical text, a brief meditation, and a prayer. These may enable readers to experience more than the commercialism of the season and be led to magnify Jesus, the One who is at the heart of why we celebrate Christmas or write New Years’ Resolutions. A line in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry summarizes a crucial idea informing this collection: “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Book excerpt: p>Four unaccompanied migrant children come together along the arduous journey north through Mexico to the United States border in this ode to the power of hope and connection even in the face of uncertainty and fear. Every year, roughly 50,000 unaccompanied minors arrive at the US/Mexico border to present themselves for asylum or related visas. The majority of these children are non-Mexicans fleeing the systemic violence of Central America’s "Northern Triangle": Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. A Journey Toward Hope tells the story of Rodrigo, a 14-year-old escaping Honduran violence; Alessandra, a 10-year-old Guatemalan whose first language is Q'eqchi'; and the Salvadoran siblings Laura and Nando. Though their reasons for making the trip are different and the journey northward is perilous, the four children band together, finding strength in one another as they share the dreams of their past and the hopes for their future. A Journey Toward Hope is written in collaboration with Baylor University’s Social Innovation Collaborative, with illustrations by the award-winning Susan Guevara (Chato's Kitchen, American Library Association Notable Book, New York Public Library's 100 Great Children’s Books / 100 Years). It includes four pages of nonfiction back matter with additional information and resources created by the Baylor Social Innovation Collaborative.
Download or read book My Tech-Wise Life written by Amy Crouch and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time to take our power back We can barely imagine our lives without technology. Tech gives us tools to connect with our friends, listen to our music, document our lives, share our opinions, and keep up with what's going on in the world. Yet it also tempts us to procrastinate, avoid honest conversations, compare ourselves with others, and filter our reality. Sometimes, it feels like our devices have a lot more control over us than we have over them. But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, we deserve so much more than what technology offers us. And when we're wise about how we use our devices, we can get more--more joy, more connection, more out of life. Tech shouldn't get in the way of a life worth living. Let's get tech-wise.
Book Synopsis A Hope-Filled Journey Under His Sky by : Bruce George Allder
Download or read book A Hope-Filled Journey Under His Sky written by Bruce George Allder and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very personal reflection on the life of Belinda (BJ) Allder, a young missionary whose life was cut short through cancer. Her father, Bruce, a Christian pastor and educator, explores the influences that shaped BJ into an effective missionary who impacted many people around the world. BJ's own reflections of her journey of life and faith through the battle with cancer are shared through excerpts from her own daily journal. While the emotions expressed are raw, there is a celebration of life and grace in the midst of tragedy. In this authentic and intellectually honest reflection, the focus is on serving in the midst of suffering. How does one make sense of unanticipated and devastating circumstances that came the way of BJ and her family? How does one "lean into suffering" and allow that response to make a significant impact? How does a pastoral family deal with the faith questions that inevitably come as a result of this journey of suffering? These are some of the questions explored through the retelling of specific events in the life of BJ Allder and her family.

This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is big, and so are its problems. In their midst, people are so small. There is light on the land. The light travels in people’s minds and on the land. The light takes root in Africa. The Danger of a Single Story The Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie once gave a TED talk on "The danger of a single story". She stated something to the effect that "Stories are important but to diversify the story is even more important.” Indeed, many people associate Africa with poverty, famine, and disease–an impression that they might have learned from a single story. Although partially true, this impression is inadequate at best, especially in the context of charity work. That impression seems to have a way of morphing into stereotypes, or labels, with which the outside world associates with Africa. Ironically, such labels are welcome in some African communities because, being labeled poor, they get more external assistance for free. As they get used to receiving aid, they even begin to believe those labels. They unknowingly and slowly lose the memories of their gifted toughness. When Africans get used to getting freebies from the outside world, they believe those labels are indeed accurate. This loss of self is a more serious problem than the problem on the label. Yet, something gratifying has happened in Africa. The COVID-19 pandemic started to sweep across the world in 2020. Many people predicted that the poor would become poorer, the hungry hungrier, and charitable aid would be more difficult to get through lock-down barriers to reach the needy. But our local volunteers in Durban, South Africa started vegetable gardens and enthusiastically shared their harvests with needy people around them. The pandemic made it clear that they must step up their efforts to cultivate in their own communities the ideal of neighbors helping neighbors so the community collectively would be more able to face the next disaster. In 2020, our volunteers developed more than 130 vegetable gardens in Durban, and residents in surrounding communities started more than 500 vegetable gardens. Vegetable garden became so popular that even recipients of Tzu Chi aid had asked for vegetable seeds instead of rice. During the pandemic, international travel was second to impossible. That made it very difficult for our Durban volunteers to travel to Eswatini to conduct any aid operation. Our local Eswatini volunteers stepped up and provided hot meals to poor children in their community every weekend. Namibian volunteers rebuilt corrugated metal shacks for the homeless. Malawian volunteers raised money to buy fabrics to sew masks and gave them to the elderly in their community. Zambiaian volunteers paddled canoes after the flooding to provide aid to poverty-stricken villages. All of these volunteers did not wait for the arrival of foreign aid. Instead, they have all proved that they have what it takes to handle any challenge that may come their way. I have been fortunate to have worked with those volunteers in Africa for many years with a common ideal to purify people's hearts. The stories here may help the readers to have a glimpse of their transformation from hopeless aid recipients to hopeful and helpful volunteers who pay it forward. Together, we have overcome numerous obstacles. They continue to help their own countrymen and leave many touching and true stories, which may help the world get a more comprehensive understanding of Africa. I hope that through our efforts, more people will be able to join together to help others so that Africa will get better. As Chimamanda also said, "When we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we will regain a kind of paradise." I sincerely hope that one day the world will associate Africa with confidence and warmth. I believe that the glimmer of hope in Africa will be brighter. The story continues.

With a great job and a perfect wife what could possibly go wrong? Fate, of course, was more than happy to answer that stupid question. Life was going swimmingly until the time arrived to start planning a family but little did Robert or Iona realise just what lay ahead for them both. Against a backdrop of the credit crunch, union strikes and erupting volcanoes they find themselves entering the incredible world of in-vitro fertilisation. Along the way they have to struggle against hideous bureaucracy, terrible incompetence and all those nasty little surprises that life can throw up as well as those quirky incidents you simply cannot make up! The Journey of Love and Hope is the story of a book. It is a very particular book of which but a single copy exists and which is aimed at a very exclusive audience. It is the account that Rob Forde wrote for his child-to-be explaining not only the motivations that drove him and Iona on but the struggles they had to endure in their quest to have a child. It is a message through time, a record of events to a very special person, a book which may never be read written for a child who may never come into existence. The Journey of Love and Hope is a fascinating bitter-sweet insight into IVF, written from the point of view of just your regular kind of bloke.

Book Synopsis Journey of Hope and Despair by : Rudolf Moos

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes chronicle the life of a liberal Jew who came of age in Germany during the relatively enlightened period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rudolf Moos obtained his education in Ulm and, after working in his family’s leather business, went in hope to seek his fortune in Berlin. He founded Salamander, the largest shoe business in Germany, which is still active today. He was a German patriot, who served his country in World War I and received a War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) for his endeavors. Rudolf Moos lived in Germany in growing despair through the political upheaval and hyperinflation in the aftermath of World War I. He was related to and enjoyed a friendship with Albert Einstein when they both lived in Berlin in the 1920s and early 1930s. Rudolf Moos then experienced the rise of the Nazis and the ever-growing restrictions placed on him and members of his extended family. Anti-Jewish sentiment in Germany rose sharply during 1933, which effectively ended his active life in business and community affairs and give him unsought free time to set out the story of his life. He and his wife were eventually permitted to leave Germany and immigrate to England, where he continued to work on his memoirs during the turmoil of World War II. Volume I of Rudolf Moos’ memoirs, “Rise and Fall”, describes the poisoned atmosphere existing for the Jews in the Germany of the late 1930s, sets out his experiences of humiliation and arrest, the breath of freedom on leaving his Homeland, and his arrival in England as a penniless alien. Chapter 1 focuses on Rudolf Moos’ origins and his father’s family and leather manufacturing company, which initiated trade with East India in the 1880s. It describes the background of Rudolf Moos’ mother, who was a member of the Einstein family, and provides details about the lives of Rafael and Rupert Einstein, her father and grandfather.
