The work describes a fascinating 'voyage of discovery' through the Okinawan martial arts during the author's younger years. Both informative & factual, the work leads the reader on a journey of initiation from the preliminary stages of being a 'live-in disciple' of Goju-ryu & trainee of Matayoshi Kobudo in post-Reversion Okinawa, as he travels with the reader through the exploration of Uechi-ryu, Shorin-ryu & Okinawan te; also of a vast spectrum of connected Ryukyuan cultural entities. His attention to detail is commendable, as the shared expedition becomes an esoteric odyssey to find the zen spark of enlightenment that evades so many seekers, but which can be found within one's own nature. Mark D Bishop is arguably the foremost authority on historical Okinawa karate & martial arts. He continues to write, travel, research and teach extensively on various aspects of these, including its related anma bodywork & zen.

Book excerpt: After 25 years of teaching karate and researching the "old ways" I finally left all of it behind and continued on my journey alone. No longer teaching or involving myself at all in the commercialism of "modern karate" I simply trained. During these years I gathered many thoughts and some disgruntled complaints. In this book I attempt to put these thoughts to paper. They are simply my notes and thoughts expanded upon and presented so that anyone who knows me might know what I have been up to and why I no longer teach or train with the modern establishment. My book comes with a warning because I am at times brutally honest. I disagree with much of the showboating, money making, "sport" aspects and modernization of karate; changing it to nothing more than a childs babysitting service and black belt mill. So these are my thoughts and opinions. Sometimes they may not make sense but then again... they're just thoughts. Again these are only my opinions. I'm not necessarily saying that anyone is doing anything wrong only that quite often they are saying and doing two different things. They have their brand and I have mine. I'll apologize up front for anyone I may insult. It truly isn't my intention to do so; but at times it can't be helped. Hopefully we can all remain friends.

Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Karate Fighter is a hard-hitting account of karate training during the 1980s in one of Europe's toughest dojos. In this gripping story, Ralph Robb gives an insight into the training methods and philosophy of the Wolverhampton YMCA karate club - which was once the top club in Britain. The YMCA won innumerable tournaments, and amongst its greatest achievements were two All-styles British Clubs championships, five UK Wado team titles and one Shotokan national team championship (1976 GB Shotokan Karate International). This book is as much about karate as it is about love, friendship, mental illness, the National Front ... and in the end, death. The author is a former Wado R karate champion (UKKW 1982) and a European all-styles silver medallist.
