Book excerpt: There were 40,000 Jews in Riga in July 1941, when the Germans occupied Latvia. 33,000 of them were interned in the ghetto, and most of them (according to Schneider's estimate, 29,000) were killed in November-December 1941 in the Rumbuli forest. At the same time, numerous Jews from the Reich began to be deported to the ghetto of Riga. Ca. 20,000 German, Austrian, and Czech Jews arrived there during the winter of 1941-42; 800 of them survived the war, which is much greater than the numbers of German Jewish survivors from the ghettos of Łódź, Minsk, Kaunas, etc. Presents a story of life and death in the ghetto, focusing mainly on the "German" part of it; the story is largely based on testimonies of survivors, including Schneider's own (she was deported to the Riga ghetto from Vienna in February 1942). Many of the Jews were sent to the Jungfernhof camp near the city, rather than to the ghetto. Later, some were transferred from the ghetto to the Salaspils camp, and in August 1943, 7,874 Jews were sent from the ghetto to the Kaiserwald camp. The rest of the ghetto was liquidated in October 1943, and ca. 60 people were left to remove all traces of the former inhabitants, after which they were also transferred to Kaiserwald. Pp. 157-175 contain a list of survivors, and pp. 177-211 contain documents.

In Sociology, A Masters in Education Counseling and Guidance. I also ran a dog kennel for twenty years at Kidder. I had five employees and made One Million dollars the year that I decided to sell the kennel and go back into counseling. My husband was ill and the market was still good for selling dogs. My degrees all came from the University of Missouri at K.C. I was a scholarship student and a University fellow. All my tuition was paid by the University and Scholarships. I took two courses in Forensic Science and Criminology from Wentworth College in Missouri after I retired before I took a job at the prison teaching GED programs at the prison in Cameron Missouri. I have a rapport with most people, children and adults from all walks of life. I live in a rural area in Kidder Missouri. I am not ready to give the book a title. I was born in the depression and moved into the space and technicality age. I believe that after I was born a higher being set the course of my life so I could be helpful to individuals that I met and worked with. I am still thinking on this.

There are more old people than ever on the planet - but fewer Elders, and there has never been a time that wisdom and leadership and integrity are more needed. This non-linear journey of a lifetime begins early in life - and invites us into becoming fully who we are and to use our gifts in service of the planet. Elder is not about age, but about the time of Life when one's hidden wholeness becomes visible. Elder means to live with integrity, undivided between the inner Self and the outer world: soul and role are connected in a seamless flow. The journey requires resilience and commitment - and Sally shares the practice she has discovered to build that strength. Sally envisions The ElderGarten as the field for learning to be an Elder. She knows that books are the thin places that invite her into the space between the real and the imaginal, so why not a field guide that shows the way to The ElderGarten?

Book excerpt: As the audacious Monkey King battles his way through a landscape of inexplicable places and unfamiliar passions, Further Adventures on the Journey to the West offers a wry, revisionist critique of the late-Ming fascination with desire. Building on the great sixteenth-century novel Journey to the West, which recounts the escapades of a monk and three companions traveling to India in search of Buddhist scriptures to carry back to China, this sequel is a parable of self-delusion that explores the tension between desire and emptiness from a Buddhist perspective. The consummate literati novel, written by an accomplished artist for a well-educated readership, it is filled with allusions and parodies and features a dream-sequence narrative that is innovative and sophisticated even by modern standards. This new, fully annotated translation by two acclaimed scholars and translators brings to life this remarkably inventive, playful early modern text. The volume includes the original commentaries and illustrations, a critical introduction and afterword, and notes that highlight the sources of the novel’s intertextual references, revealing the author’s erudition and versatility.
