Book Synopsis World of Letters by : Corinne Sandwith
Download or read book World of Letters written by Corinne Sandwith and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "World of Letters retrieves an important but largely forgotten history of readers, reading practices and cultural debates in early apartheid South Africa. Corinne Sandwith pursues this history in the ephemeral spaces of oppositional newspapers, literary magazines, debating societies and theatre groups. What emerges from the diverse fragments is a rich tradition of public debate in South Africa on literature and culture. What also surfaces are a host of readers and critics - such as A.C. Jordan, Dora Taylor, Jack Cope and Ben Kies - whose lively cultural interventions form a significant part of South Africa' s literary-cultural and socio-political heritage. Offering a combination of historical narrative, critical analysis and biography, this elegantly written book recovers these neglected reading and debating communities in order to bring them into the present and to reclaim their constitutive role in both the literary archive and the public sphere." -- Back page.
Book Synopsis International Human Rights Law in Africa by : Frans Viljoen
Download or read book International Human Rights Law in Africa written by Frans Viljoen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and analytical overview of human rights law in Africa. It examines the institutions, norms, and processes for human rights realization provided for under the United Nations system, the African Union, and sub-regional economic communitites in Africa, and explores their relationship with the national legal systems of African states. Since the establishment of the African Union in 2001, there has been a proliferation of regional institutions that are relevant to human rights in Africa. These include the Pan African Parliament, the Peace and Security Council, the Economic, Social and Cultural Council and the African Peer Review Mechanism of the New Partnership for Africa's Development. This book discusses the links between these institutions. It further examines the case law stemming from Africa' most important human rights instrument, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, which entered into force on 21 October 1986. This new edition contains a new chapter on the African Children's Rights Committee as well as full coverage of new developments and instruments, such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on Enforced Disappearances, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Three cross-cutting themes are explored throughout the book: national implementation and enforcement of international human rights law; legal and other forms of integration; and the role of human rights in the eradication of poverty. The book also provides an introduction to the relevant human rights concepts.
Book Synopsis A Review of Sodium Monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) by : Stephen P. Atzert
Download or read book A Review of Sodium Monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) written by Stephen P. Atzert and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War sodium monofluoroacetate, or sodium fluoroacetate (Compound 1080), has been the subject of wide research in the United States and elsewhere. Based on this research, it has been approved for animal damage control work by several nations. In the United States sodium monofluoroacetate has been a tool used by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife to control coyote and rodent damage, as well as a tool used by private pest control operators to control commensal rodents. Despite 25 years of worldwide research and practical experience, the use of Compound 1080 is still embroiled in controversy. The purpose of this monograph is to summarize current information on sodium monofluoroacetate, to review use patterns, and to provide a base for further studies.

Book Synopsis Music and Its Social Meanings by : Christopher Ballantine
Download or read book Music and Its Social Meanings written by Christopher Ballantine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1984. This is the second volume in a series on musicology and related areas edited by F. Joseph Smith. Deciphering the specific social characteristics of music has long lagged behind the analytical dissection of musical composition and biographical musicology. The essays in this volume have been produced in an attempt to redress the balance. The sociology of music as examined here is an investigation into the ways social formations come together in musical structures. These essays specifically address the problem of our neutralized music consciousness, the separation of music from the social context and the artificial insulation of musical understanding from the realms of social meanings. One theme in these essays concerns the struggle against ideological distortions arising from the insulation of music from its sociological context. The author argues that there is a stronger connection between music and society than is generally assumed.
