Book excerpt: 16th century poet Luís Vaz de Camões is widely considered as Portugal's greatest classical poet. Most likely born in Lisbon around 1524, Luís Vaz de Camões received a formal education, possibly from the University of Coimbra. While his family was poor, his heritage was noble and thus Luís Vaz de Camões was able to gain admittance to the court of John III where his career as a poet began. In the 1550s he traveled to the east, passing through the same regions that Vasco da Gama had sailed. It is about this time that he likely began writing his magnum opus, "The Lusiads". First published in 1572, this epic poem, which is frequently compared to Virgil's "Aeneid", relates the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama's discovery of the maritime route to India by way of Cape of Good Hope. Composed of over 1100 stanzas in ten books, "The Lusiads" is to this day widely regarded as the most important literary work of the Portuguese language. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of William Julius Mickle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern plays are strikingly diverse and, as a result, any attempt to locate an underlying unity between them encounters difficulties: to focus on what they have in common is often to overlook what is of primary importance in particular plays; to focus on their differences is to note the novelty of the plays without increasing their accessibility. In this study, first published in 1985, Austin E. Quigley takes as his paradigm case the relationship between the world of the stage and the world of the audience, and explores various modes of communication between domains. He asks how changes in the structure of the drama relate to changes in the structure of the theatre, and changes in the role of the audience. Detailed interpretations of plays by Pinero, Ibsen, Strindberg, Brecht, Ionesco, Beckett and Pinter question principles about the modern theatre and establish links between drama structure and theatre structure, theme, and performance space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manslaughter, blackmail, violent sex, sudden death: out of materials which might have served a lesser author as the basis for mere melodrama, E. M. Forster created literary vehicles which convey the reader with near-celestial ease to psychological realms as diverse as the London drawing-room and the Indian cave of revelation. The essays collected here range from early commentaries introducing Forster to an American audience, to more recent essays illuminating the subtlety and resourcefulness of his fictional method, the acute modernity of his moral and intellectual concerns. Disputing a long-held view that Forster is intellectually a Victorian, in bondage to the liberal pieties he portrayed so well, these critics point to his capacity for rigorous self-scrutiny and detached observation of those very institutions and ideas so often associated with him. As they reveal new facets of Forster's accomplishment, these essays indicate why the twentieth century now recognizes him as one of its major literary figures. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Henri Peyre, dean of French scholars in the United States, introduces "The Two Faces of Ionesco" thus: "Rosette Lamont, the shrewdest and most perceptive interpreter of Ioensco in Europe and America, and Melvin Friedman, known in France for his" Confirguation Critique de Samuel Beckett," which was published by The University of Chicago Press as "Samuel Beckett Now," have ingeniously gathered here a series of chapters by diverse hands which illuminate all the conflicting aspects of that enigmatic personality. Their introduction, and Professor Lamont's own essays in this volume, brilliantly written, unravel the thought, the technique and the complexities of Ionesco's work.
