Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1898, Vol. 20 HE following contribution to our knowledge of selenium was undertaken with the View of studying the various derivatives and reactions of the element, and using such methods or compounds as would prove available in the determination of its atomic mass. In the series presented, ratios have been determined in com pounds differing widely in character and composition, and by methods entirely unlike in nature. The action of hydrochloric acid gas upon the salts of acid oxides which possess the power of forming volatile compounds with it, affords a clean and accurate method, which can be used in establishing the atomic ratio. A salt of such a character, when subjected to the action of the gas, yields a substance removed at once from the field of action, while in the vessel which contained the original salt there remains a chloride which can be directly weighed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Chemical Society: General Index to the First Twenty Volume, 1879-1898, and to the Proceedings, 1877-1879 HE earlier volumes of the Journal contained abstracts of papers which had appeared elsewhere. So many of the names of the authors of these papers were erroneously printed that we had to verify all such by reference to the original, unless it was already well known to us. They appear in this index in the correct form, with initials of Christian names supplied, if possible. When it could not be determined whether M. Was an initial or the French equivalent of our Mr., it was printed In a few cases, articles which it is suspected belong to the same author appear under entries slightly different in form; the two entries under Guyard, and the first and third under Monnet are examples. Had Monnet y Cos written more frequently, it would have been possible to resolve the doubt which prevented the placing all papers by a person under his name in its latest form, according to the established rule. In case of variety in ways of print ing certain names, the Royal Society's Catalogue has commonly been fol lowed. But the few Russian names cited have not been rescued from the confusion produced by transliteration into English from both French and German. In the index of authors, few liberties have been taken with titles, except in spelling uniformly certain words, such as benzene, on which probably all would now agree. In the index of subjects, it was thought desirable to se cure somewhat more uniformity of spelling and nomenclature in the titles of abstracts. The index has been printed from the original cards which had been pre pared directly from the pages of the Journal and afterwards twice verified. Having been arranged alphabetically, they were made ready for the printer by cancelling words common to successive entries, and by changes in order of words and other slight modifications of expressions. In an index so pre pared, the compiler sometimes satisfies himself with a sequence and relation of entries not quite so felicitous as if everything had been rewritten, but the figures submitted to the printer cannot be erroneous, except by becoming illegible. In our labor of love for the Society, we thought that accuracy of reference to page and volume was that most desired at our hands. The fact that the preparation of the index was divided somewhat equally between two compilers has lessened the uniformity of treatment which might have been secured otherwise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Chemical Society, 1906, Vol. 89: Transactions, Part II During the development of a more accurate method (denison and Steele, P/iil. Trans, 1906, 205, A, 449) than that previously adopted for the direct measurement of ionic velocities, we have repeatedly noticed that when certain salts were employed as indicators there was a constant retardation of the margin under observation. It had been previously pointed out (steele, Phil. Trans, 1901, 198, A, 105) that one of the necessary conditions for a constant margin-velocity was that the indicator should not undergo hydrolysis, and a number of cases of retardation referred to above have been traced to the fact that the indicators in question were somewhat hydro lysed. It occurred to us that the retardation might be capable of quantitative measurement, and might serve as a means of determining, at least approximately, the extent of hydrolysis of the indicator. Our anticipations have been more than realised, as we have found the above principle to be capable of development to an accurate method of measuring hydrolysis which can be carried out with considerable rapidity and in solutions of widely varying con centration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1898, Vol. 20 The chemical distinction of the source of a sample of vinegar must depend largely upon the quantity and composition of its solid constituents. The organic portion of these solids would seem to offer an excellent Opportunity for differentiation, in its maleic and succinic acids, glycerol and sugar contents, and the accurate determination of these would undoubtedly furnish the most valuable basis for judgment. At present, however, the methods in use for the determination of each of these are so tedious and, in the end, so unsatisfactory, that the mineral con tents of the ash afford a more advantageous and practical method for the public analyst. The ash of cider vinegar differs from that of most other kinds in a number of characteristics, only a few of which have hereto fore been pointed out.'
